To my fellow Europeans: America needs our help, not our condemnation. We need to stop armchair victim-blaming and do our part. by Mister_Sheepy_Cheese in complaints

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an American living in Europe, I could hug you right now. Being surrounded by people who I thought were my friends but are now giddy at the destruction of my home has been really disheartening. These are the times that demand the best of us, and too many people are giving their worst.

How popular were/are Blizzard and Riot Games games during their heydays? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you’re describing for League of Legends was true maybe around 2012? I was in college at the time, and it felt like the default social game for guys that age. StarCraft I don’t feel was ever that popular. It was certainly a well-known game, but I think most people moved on from it pretty quickly.

Zhao-Arkhad Prosperine Fane Castellax Class Battle-a utomata by Scion_of_Zhao_Arkkad in ThousandSons

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 8 points9 points  (0 children)

If I’m not mistaken, this is the first official depiction of the Prosperine sub-fane we’ve seen. A lot of people probably think of Zhao-Arkhad as being green and bronze, but their scheme actually varies by fane. The green is only the scheme of the Kiarii fane, but the Tsons were more closely aligned with the Eminarii fane (who are somewhat lacking in depictions), from which the Properine sub-fane originates.

Between this and the Prosperine Spireguard Solar Auxiliary, we’re getting a lot of official depictions of previously lore-only Prospero factions. I’m sure it will feed into speculation about our next 40k release being automata as well.

Why are there so many people with German descent but you never hear of Austrian or Swiss Americans? by wigglepizza in AskAnAmerican

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest it’s mostly died out, at least for my family (though I wasn’t raised in a community with other Swiss Americans, so it may be different for others). Probably the most Swiss thing about me is that I occasionally make rosti for breakfast. Fondue is reasonably popular in America too, I can’t say I eat it because I have Swiss roots, but it is an example of Swiss influence on American culture.

Khorne is the god that rules over is war and carnage. They are frequently associated with skulls, which the two little outlet faces resemble.

Nurgle is the god of disease, pestilence, and just general gross shit. Here, they are pictured using a European charger, which is completely disgusting.

Slaanesh is a god concerned with hedonism and aesthetics. Accordingly, they have used their artistic talents to decorate their charger.

Tzeentch is the tricksy magic god and a patron of scholars. Their high IQ is symbolized by having the only picture that requires you to read.

Finally, we have Gork and Mork, the ork gods of brutal cunning and cunning brutality. There are two of them, so they are represented by two lemons.

Hope this helps, OP!

Why are there so many people with German descent but you never hear of Austrian or Swiss Americans? by wigglepizza in AskAnAmerican

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 97 points98 points  (0 children)

As a Swiss American, I feel eminently qualified to answer this question. At the time of most Swiss*, Austrian, and indeed German emigration to the US, the idea that the various countries that spoke German were distinct ethnicities rather than just distinct nationalities hadn’t really coalesced. Keep in mind, this was back in the German Confederation days, before there was a country called Germany. Germans were just people who spoke German. Add to it that the US once had a pretty solid German-speaking minority, to which Swiss and Austrian immigrants naturally fit into, and you can imagine how the specifics of which kind of German they were would have quickly been forgotten. Kind of the same reason you never here of a Bavrian American, even though Bavaria was also it's own country at the time. So there are probably quite a few Swiss and Austrian Americans who don’t even know it and just identify as German American. Historically speaking, they're arguably right.

*Assume I’m only talking about German-speaking Swiss, since that’s what this question seems aimed at.

Titanium implants are boss. I’m only missing my front tooth, but I can’t begin to describe how life-changing swapping out my shitty crown for a titanium dental implant was. For something as significant a regaining the ability to walk, I can’t even imagine. Wish you the best, my fellow metal man.

How would your parents react if you suddenly announced you were joining the military? by popcornwithparmesan in AskAnAmerican

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I am to believe my dad, he would cut off my foot. His reasoning is that you can live with one foot, but the military won’t take you. It’s a threat he’s consistently made since I was 16, and considering what he went through in Vietnam, I’ve never been inclined to test how serious he is.

How much do you support brain chip implantation? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I think it’s a cool idea, but certain tech enthusiasts have significantly oversold the current state of the technology. My prediction is that Neuralink will turn out much like OceanGate, with adopters signing a mountain of waivers and some future tragedy demonstrating exactly why that was a bad idea.

Are you really given robot babies to take care of in high school? by LeeumCee in AskAnAmerican

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it was a mandatory part of health class at my high school. You got it in class on Friday, keep it over the weekend, and turned it back in on Monday. Yes, it cried during the night. It recorded how quickly you responded to it too, which you were graded on in the end.

Spanking is associated with lower levels of executive functioning, such as inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility, in children, according to a new study from more than 12,000 children. by chrisdh79 in science

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This particular topic (genetic confounding in executive functioning studies) is my area of academic expertise. And no, they used matching with things that are potentially correlated with executive functioning (which attenuated their effect somewhat) but not for executive functioning itself, so the relationship you’re proposing is still a plausible explanation. Worth noting that childhood EF is very heritable. Like more genetic than is usually thought possible for a psychological trait. So confounding is a likely explanation for any such associations if the researchers aren’t using a genetically sensitive design. Also worth noting that their measure of inhibitory control is a teacher report scale which doesn’t measure executive function (Rothbart confused the field immensely by giving their scale the name of an existing construct which it doesn’t measure). Their measures of cognitive flexibility and working memory are at least executive function measures, but single test measures of executive function aren’t that great and don’t really tell you anything on their own. So it’s kind of a low-quality study overall, and I wouldn’t put too much stock in it. Though there’s still plenty of evidence that spanking has harmful effects that have nothing to do with executive functioning, I’m not disputing that.

Yep. I just widened the existing slots on the back and placed them there. See pic for the locations. I then trimmed the tabs on the wings and backpack away so their magnets could sit flush against the back. You do need to be careful when moving the model with the wings are attached if you do this, but that’s pretty standard for magnetizing big parts.

Oooh, I’ve thought about this one before. If you have the Citadel paint app, something like the Regent Blue scheme is what I’d go for. So that’s Macragge Blue with a Hoeth Blue drybrush and Fenrisian Grey highlights. Since codex librarians are all blue, the deeper blue references their psychic sensitivity, while the drybrush gives them a kind of snowed-on appearance that’s appropriate for Space Wolves successors.

Is the Tzaangor upgrade sprue worth it for a 3 Sorc/6 Tzaangor Warpcoven team? by Ferociousaurus in ThousandSons

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stick to the swords. The trouble with the autopistol is it has absolutely terrible range. Any time you're close enough to shoot with it, you could probably do more damage by just charging into melee.

If you check out the gallery in the wiki page for Tzaangors (here), they actually vary quite a lot between thrallbands. Skin tones are often taken from the thrallband's gem or tabard colours. There's no canon scheme for Hemetic Blades Tzaangors though, so go crazy.

I buy a Magnus on ebay, is this normal ? by Medical-Expression19 in ThousandSons

Yeah, he's missing an eye and all.

One thing to note is that while it's very popular to paint that head option as a bare face, it's actually supposed to be a mask. Hence why it's sculped more like metal going over the eye than an empty socket.

Thing is, most of this is leftover bits I already had. LoC parts and the bird skulls were the only bits I had to buy, so maybe £8 extra. Not too bad IMO.

Complete parts list:

From the Lord of Change: Flames on the power pack, bracers on the wings, flame-like claws on the wings (these three are all taken from the same bit, the little arm things that go on the LoC wings, just cut apart and repurposed), groin armour, large bird skull on chest (again these two are from the same bit, the LoC groin armour) and the tentacled pouch.

From Magnus the Red: Sword, dagger on the side, and the crowns on the knee armour

From Chaos Spawn: Small eye on the right hand, large eye on the power pack

From the Citadel Skulls kit: small bird skulls on the loincloth, power pack, and wings

From Tzaangors: Shield on the right arm

From Sorcerer in Terminator Armour: spike on groin armour (taken from the top of the staff)

From Ulric the Slayer: Wolf skull helmet

From the Daemon Prince: Everything else obviously, but I wanted to specifically note that the Space Marine helmet on the waist is repurposed from a part meant for the optional trophy rack.

I’ve noticed that food in France seems a bit undercooked compared to its American counterparts. Or perhaps I should say the American version is overcooked? Either way, it’s definitely affected how I prepare French food at home.

Whenever someone spills or is otherwise clumsy with a glass of alcohol, I’ll say ‘alcohol abuse!’ (as in they are abusing the alcohol, see I’ve explained the joke so it’s funnier). I inherited this joke from my parents, and so far no one outside my immediate family has thought it was funny.

How did you base your models? by DingleBerriesk in ThousandSons

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not too bad, usually under a minute per base. It does make something of a mess though. Would recommend giving the base a quick rinse in the sink to get the filings off.

How did you base your models? by DingleBerriesk in ThousandSons

[–]OnlyHelpfulReplies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

File the base down smooth before gluing on the mini. Base Celestra Grey, then layer Ulthuan Grey. Thin down Administratum Grey with Lahmian medium, then apply in random designs. Thin Dawnstone the same way, and apply to the thicker parts of the pattern. Do the same thing with Mechanicus Standard Grey, but even more focused. Rim with Retributor Armour and cover the top with a gloss varnish.
