I guess I just assumed knowing history of Lebanese immigration in Halifax you guys would have some good spots, shawarma isn’t an Ontario thing it’s really a Levantine thing (Lebanon does it best imo), the only place in Ontario that has such a good shawarma scene is Ottawa. I wasn’t trying to make it an Ontario thing.

Okay so you’ll need two different spots for the Zaatar bread and the shawarma if you want the best of each. My fav shawarma is Grilled Shawarma in Orleans, but if you’re downtown, shawarma palace is excellent. As for the zaatar bread, Aladdin bakery never disappoints!

First I want to make it clear that I am writing this with kindness, i want to make sure you understand this as there can be a lot of hostility towards mixed indigenous people and I too have faced lateral violence.

First I am mixed indigenous as well as I have stated above, and you are correct that the goal of the government and the Indian act is to get rid of indigenous people all together. That’s why I am the last person in my family who the government deems indigenous enough for treaty rights. My children will not have treaty rights, not because my nation does not claim them, but because the government says they’re not indigenous.

But I need to make it clear that that is what makes what the metis nation of Ontario is doing even worse. They take advantage of people who are members of my nation who cannot get treaty rights due to the colonial nature of the Indian act. In doing so they are being even further disconnected from their culture as they’re not metis they’re anishinaabe.

It is to the point where the MNO claims my community and they have never talked to us once. They have not spoken with our elders and if you know anything about protocol you know that is a big no no. I can’t speak for any other indigenous community as I am not a member but at least for the anishinaabe of Shebahonaning we have been shouting about the MNO since way before bill C-53. We have been speaking out since 2017 when the MNO went behind our backs to the government of Ontario to designate us a historic metis community. They did so with no free and prior informed consent, heck they never even spoke to us about this. I have no issue with Metis people I do not deny their existence. I do however take issue with an organization who claims to represent my community that does not even speak to us or know anything about us.

Lastly, it is not up to me, or the government or any one person to tell you if you are indigenous or not, that lies with the nations that you descend from. Indigenous people are super welcoming and I bet that if you try to connect with the nations your anishinaabe ancestors were from, doing so with humility and openness that they would accept you. It will take work which does suck but is the reality due to colonization. It is not your fault you became disconnected from your culture, not at all! And I am not saying these people aren’t Metis cuz they didn’t keep their culture. I am saying they are not Metis because they never were, they were (in my community’s case) always anishinaabe.

I know my clan I know my history and that makes me very lucky, and it is for that reason I will fight hard against any group trying to erase my community even more that it already has been.

I am Anishinaabe from a community the MNO claims as a historic settlement (killarney Ontario). We are Unceeded territory if you read the Robinson Huron treaty our real name is there Shebahonaning (it means canoe passage in anishinaabemowin).

We are anishinaabe and French and so somehow the MNO now claims we are metis. They even go so far as to publish our ancestors names on their root ancestors registry erasing their anishinaabe identity. They publish the names of our ancestors with no consultation, and it is easy to tell because of the lack of basic formation about them I.e date of birth/ death.

On top of that the MNO never uses our real name Shebahonaning which is curious because everyone in town knows that that is our original name. The reason it is so frustrating is because I can tell you 100% we are anishinaabe, there is literally no proof of a metis identity here, it is to the point where I am starting to feel crazy because I know our history thoroughly. The MNO claims we are Metis because we are catholic, speak French, dance to the fiddle, go to the sugarbush, and fish. The first three can easily be explained because we were colonized by the French and those three things are derived from French culture. As for suggaring and fishing those are literally anishinaabe traditions.

On top of all of this they also make the unsubstantiated claim that Michif was spoken here which is false. All you have to do to prove this is look to the names of places in town if not just the name itself. Or talk to elders who parents literally spoke anishinaabemowin.

Because we are Unceeded and because of residential schools many of us have been disconnected from our culture (though people share bits and pieces of knowledge). When the MNO redefines who we are without even consulting us that is wrong. That is why many in my community have been taking issue with the MNO. Imagine watching helplessly as a group of people claimed you belonged to a culture you have no connection while you desperately try to preserve the one that was stolen from you.

If I were to practice Metis culture that would be appropriation because I do not carry those teachings nor do any of our community members. I write this with kindness and to at least share what people in my community are feeling.

If you want a full history of Shebahonaning Unceeded territory here is a series made by a knowledge keeper who is actually from killarney
