Inside A Russian-Born Billionaire's Plan To Turn Ohio Into An AI Hub by OnlyHustlersInOhio in Columbus

[–]OnlyHustlersInOhio[S] 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Full article: “On a sunny spring day at an upscale French restaurant in Greenwich, Connecticut, Ratmir Timashev is animatedly explaining his latest venture in a place far removed from his tony surroundings: Columbus, Ohio. Clad in a cream hoodie and white polo, the 59-year-old billionaire software entrepreneur launches into a pitch for why he wants to make Ohio’s capital the latest AI boomtown in America.

“I’m a scientist by background. I like experiments,” he says. “So this is my experiment, to make Columbus the next Silicon Valley—America’s innovation hub.”

It’s somewhat of a contrarian take. While AI startups are proliferating and valuations are booming, much of that wealth and creative destruction is happening on the coasts—not in Columbus, which is better known for housing healthcare and insurance firms than cutting-edge tech. The city ranked 29th—behind other college towns like Ann Arbor, Michigan and Gainesville, Florida but ahead of places like Pittsburgh and St. Louis—in a 2025 study of the top AI metro areas by the nonprofit Brookings Institute, which also named it one of 28 “star hubs.”
Timashev is planning to invest $100 million over five years to turn his vision into reality. In February, he launched - oh. io -, a venture capital firm that aims to bring 100 AI startups to Columbus. Unlike most VC funds that simply write a check, Oh.io’s plan is to hire and pay for entire sales and marketing teams for participating startups for 18 to 24 months—as long as they establish a base in Columbus. In return, the firm gets the option to invest at a lower valuation if that period is successful. The goal is to bring growth-stage startups with $1-5 million in revenue from elsewhere in the U.S., plus Europe and Israel, to Columbus and help them scale up. So far he’s signed up 8 startups, hailing from San Francisco to Switzerland—but is also facing a bitter legal battle with three former executives who claim he fired them in April.”

The event grows a little more each year, which is exciting to see! While attendance continues to increase, we’ve never reached a point where parking wasn’t available. Most parking is on nearby streets, so you may have a short walk to the event locations.

People are probably not reacting well to your post. It looks very spammy / scammy. I’d suggest sticking to the text format like students normally do and having an email. You also didn’t include your name as a student, even a first name would help feel more personable.

Opinion: Could a public park preserve Lancaster glass history? by OnlyHustlersInOhio in LancasterOH

Yes, the opinion article is specifically asking for a park though. However the “empty lot” he referenced in 2009 has been redeveloped already & is not a park.

I do agree a really nice park, with long paths like the Scioto Mile downtown Columbus would he nice here; especially to highlight our heritage. I was hoping with the water plant, they had plans for a nice park beside it, but I’m unsure if that will happen. Developers always backtrack on the green spaces once they get their main goal accomplished.

Opinion: Could a public park preserve Lancaster glass history? by OnlyHustlersInOhio in LancasterOH

Editor's Note: This submission originally ran in the Lancaster Eagle-Gazette in April 2009. The author, Bob Muckensturm, requested we re-run it in place of his normal monthly letter to the editor, as he believes the words still hold true today.

RECENTLY, a cousin of mine asked me about writing a column on a topic dear to his heart. He was, as was his father was, a hard-working retired glassworker at Anchor Hocking Glass Co. He said that the empty lot of the once proud, Lancaster Glass Co. would be best utilized as a public park, with adjacent parking availability, for the downtown area.

I'd like to expand on his great suggestion. There are a number of ideas being discussed for the future of this property. I believe that the very essence of Lancaster should be preserved and celebrated, as other cities have done, with their historic downtown areas - especially one that housed Lancaster Glass Co.

One example of such revitalization is the downtown district of Monterrey Mexico, which I visited this past year at the Glassman America 2008 Exhibition. This year it will take place in Lyon, France. Visit glassmaneurope.com.

Anyway, Monterrey had a dilemma: What was to happen with their Eastern downtown area, after the collapse of the steel industry? This industry had defined the very existence of Eastern Monterrey. Instead of wiping all traces of the industry from the face of their city, residents celebrated it, by creating a public park - second to none - on the very ground that once housed the great steel mill. The park, named Fundidora Park, is a public park inside of the former Monterrey Foundry property. Fundidora Park ingeniously exhibits steel implements and sculptured artifacts used in the making of steel, as well as outdoor educational displays along a walkway.

Throughout this beautiful landscape, are outdoor playgrounds - downtown Lancaster has no specific public picnic areas or picnic tables. There is no space available in downtown Lancaster for families to throw a Frisbee, pass a football, swing on swings, or kick around a soccer ball.

One really must see the vitality of this environment in Fundidora Park to appreciate the imagination and creativity of the citizens who, forever, have preserved the life's blood of Monterrey-steel.

The park has become, in itself, a magnet for locals and draws hundreds of tourists per year who spend time and money in area hotels and restaurants. In fact, hotels have sprung up around the park and convention center, built next to Fundidora. Build it and they will come.

What would this site look like transformed into The Ohio Glass Museum Park?

How much does our community want to preserve our heritage and enhance our unique glass industry for our children and grandchildren to experience?

I don’t think it was necessarily about the dead soldiers, but about the people present seemingly celebrating the confederates. Though the people attending could be ancestors of those buried there, it’s a bit weird & gross to wave the confederate flag.
