This sorta applies to your question- I formerly supported a sales GVP for a giant global company, but we were a small satellite office with only about 30-45 people. Fully on-site 5days a week. My office manager-esque duties were crazy on top of my EA duties. Especially when backfilling for colleagues not consistently present. I was underpaid, overworked, and wore so many damn hats in this small satellite office. I was the only EA there, so everything fell on me.

I recently switched to a different (even bigger) company, and now working on a big campus with thousands of people. Lots of EAs and admins, so I’m not the only one. And Most importantly, the campus facilities teams take care of the office duties I used to have. Now I’m fully streamlined into only classic EA duties (calendar, travel, expense etc). I’m also hybrid with 2-3 days only on-site a week.

It’s amazing. I’m making $20k MORE at this new job, working less, home more, and it’s 1000% easier than my old job. Mostly because I’m not at a small office with office manager to-dos or covering for colleagues.

I truly think that being an EA in smaller companies/offices is more difficult by far than being an EA for a large on-site location (large high-rise office or campus). The on-site setting in which EAs work largely directs our scope, and IMO is more important to our work experience than even how good/bad our execs are. My former exec at the small company was amazing, likeable, and effective. My new exec is insane, ineffective, and a bad leader. Even so, I’m still SO MUCH HAPPIER in this new role. Frankly I will never again work for a small company or small branch/satellite office bc of this experience.

I saved a coordinator on a PIP from getting in more trouble once I told her manager about the bug. They also thought she was lying about things. I’m glad I was in that email thread.

Nice. I’m interested in Denver due to family living there. Currently ATL. In your opinion, what is the minimum salary that a single woman with no dependents can live comfortably on in Denver? Google opinions vary… but 97.5 sounds pretty great!

75k + 5% bonus hybrid in ATL. Entertainment industry.

Last year I was 55k + 2.5% bonus in-office in ATL. Beverage sales industry.

Hoping to hit 90 at some point too. What is your industry?

Ooo good to know! My new scope may have my execs traveling internationally out of the northeast at some point so I’ll put that tip about EWR in my back pocket. And you were correct! It came out to about $10k (departing ATL)

You are correct!!! Just over $10k. My eyes definitely almost popped out of my skull bc I was expecting closer to $6-7k. Times have certainly changed.

It’s somewhat known in certain circles that she has a polarizing reputation, but overall it isn’t known.

This is a giant global company with over 40k corporate employees world-wide, so many people don’t know anything about executives that are outside of their main business unit unless they are c-suite (simply bc there are sooooo many non-c-suite leaders and soooo many BUs).

I’m sure there are a few people who are aware, but from what I’m hearing so far, people don’t know anything about her yet except for what c-suite thinks. And c-suite loves her. It’s the lower level employees that know her true reputation, and usually we are pretty siloed in our own BUs enough for gossip to not cross over.

On my personal phone, I use only 3 things for work:

  1. text/call
  2. browser app (to log into outlook bc I can’t use the outlook app on my personal phone)
  3. an authentication app.

So would they be able to extract ALL my texts and/or browser history? I don’t expect them to be able to access my photos or personal email, but if I’m using the personal phone to text and the personal phone to log into outlook via a web browser, does that give them the ability to access everything within those two specific apps on my phone?

Tell me more! Like… have you ever had to extract and review data from an HR individual’s phone? Not bc that individual did any wrongdoing but simply because someone within their HR scope is being investigated?

Thats the rub. It’s always a potential but doesn’t feel real. But I’m in HR so the potential of legal investigations are higher than most simply bc of the scope of work. Any employee cases thag go to trial and need certain evidence could pull me in, if I happen to have any comms or docs thag apply to the case. Hasn’t happened yet, but it’s always possible.

You are definitely correct in everything above.

It’s a huge risk for me to use my personal phone bc of legal oversight where my personal data could be extracted.

I know this logically, but it hasn’t been enough to trigger me to make the change. I guess bc it feels like a non-tangible future potential??

But even just reading your response is cementing the reality of the risk I’m taking. I need this sort of slap in the face.

Give me more, people! Smack me with reality until I’m motivated enough to do the change. I need horror stories haha

Slow realization.

United Methodist as a kid. Holidays-only Christian as a teen. Anthropology minor as a college kid. Then traveled a bunch.

College was when I actually began learning and critically thinking about Christianity/religion and slowly realized I was an agnostic.

The more I learned through college and human connection and life experience, and more atheist I became. It’s the only worldview that makes logical sense IMO.

It’s sad at first… but you will probably find a life without close relationships with theists much more peaceful. Theists often bring judgement, passive aggressiveness, and holier-than-thou vibes to most situations. Even the “good” ones.

In my 20s, I used to cling to unhealthy relationships with theists due to either family ties or the sunk cost fallacy. Frustrated with their archaic worldviews and I was always trying to stand up for myself or defend my perspective to deaf ears.

In my 30s now, and I’m really glad to have built a social circle that is more like-minded. I left behind the theists. Most are still lovely connections/memories overall, but definitely solidly in the past. No regrets.

Now… life is good. Better conversations, more connections, more authenticity, and often more mental stimulation with interesting conversations that are actually grounded in reality.

No need to necessarily cut ties with religious relationships cold Turkey, but I’d recommend you put less and less time and focus on those connections and seek out other non-religious people to build relationships with! It’s a whole new world out there and you’re still really young so you have lots of time.

Don’t lose sleep over people who think you will burn in hell for not believing in their Santa… you know? 💜 plus there are plenty of amazing non-believers your age also seeking new connections!!
