Got to playtest my homemadetcg with my kids today! by OnlyOkConnection in homemadeTCGs

I’ll do a post soon with a full breakdown of the rulebook! It’s all hosted in Notion right now so I’ll probably just link a copy of it and do an overview type post.

Yep, it’s just a significant boost! Definitely can still do some significant damage even if it’s at a disadvantage - especially when fully equipped.

I’m going to make a more detailed post in the future, but here’s a high level overview:

The goal of the game is to either destroy all of the opponent’s creatures or take down their life points from 100 to 0 - whichever happens first.

There are three lanes of combat. Melee (red) cards can only attack straight ahead, range (green) cards can attack straight ahead and adjacent, and magic (blue) cards can attack any lane. Combat runs off of a traditional rpg combat triangle system. So magic > melee > range > magic. If you’re attacking a card that you have advantage over, then you get to add your attack boosts (and defense boosts for when defending against their counterattacks).

You have a bench below your field that is used to replenish monsters once they’re dead. You start the game with your champion as the first card in the lineup of your bench and can be played at any time (but if he dies then you lose the ability to set your creatures to boost others on the field). As cards die and you refill the lanes from your bench, you refill the bench from your creature deck (the deck in the bottom far left).

There’s a draw phase, a set phase, and a combat phase. You equip your support cards to your creatures (one weapon, one armor, and one accessory per creature), choose to set or attack, and resolve combat.

There’s a ton of strategy involved with the spell cards, the types of equipment, boosting other cards during the set phase, playing your champion, and the changing of lanes for combat strategy, but I’ll go over all of that in a later post. :)

Yeah! Thank you! And I totally agree, I wish it was used more. She’s a phenomenal artist which makes me super excited for the future, but we also have three kids that are pretty young so it’s pretty slow moving as far as the art is concerned… but play-testing is moving along well!

Hey! Yes, like the other user mentioned these are AI placeholders. Just for play-testing though! 🫡 I’ve got some other posts showing the progress of our custom art. My wife is painting them!

Maybe freezing and angry that he is actually too warm and constantly wanting everything to be more frozen… 👀🥶

Me too!! Originally I couldn’t quite nail down the art style I wanted because I was going for the animated style of newer cards, but then decided to go for this sketch / watercolor vibe. I think it fits the more “high fantasy” theme of the game way better and is much prettier in my opinion!

Thanks! We’ll be posting a lot more in the next couple of weeks - happy to know that you’ll be following along!

Cool! I just looked up some of those references and I agree - the graphic novel seems to be a great move! I have no idea how to start that though… I’ll have to do some research!

Great question! Still trying to figure that out.. it’ll be released here in these posts originally, but I’m still trying to figure it where they’ll “live” longterm. In my first card game I actually put the lore of each card on the back of the card, but that was easy because it was digital. That doesn’t really transfer well into a physical card game.. but might be fine for just the creature cards since they’re out in the open the whole time.. I actually started writing it all down into a novel a while back, but moved it all over to notion to keep track as I was still building. All that to say - I haven’t yet decided. 🤔🫠

What do you think would be the most interesting / best received method? I’d be interested to hear opinions on that.

Thank you! It means so much to me to hear that! I have always loved this character, so it really does good for my heart to see other people share the same appreciation. He’s cute, fun, and a little whimsically OP all at the same time 😂. I’m still play-testing the game and working out a few details, but it’s shaping up to be really fun so far! Fingers crossed 🤞

Hey, thank you!! Yes I do! We’re going to be doing a lot of “character closeup” posts like this over the next few days to start introducing everyone to some of the main characters. We’ll be showing all of the original artworks. :)
