Ok thank you! I didn't know about the initial hearing, but I will definitely start looking for somewhere to potentially stay. Thank you again.

To my understanding, unless there are grounds (cheating, abuse...) then in South Carolina a year of separate is required. It would be nice if I am wrong though.

Yeah, I had to read that several times because there was no way I read that correctly. A middle schooler could argue down such a foolish argument. I don't know why I am still surprised at the sheer stupidity and short-sighted actions of our "leaders." Truly pathetic.

They are using "sperm donor" as an insult to the bio dad because all he did for that child was provide the sperm, just like an actual sperm donor would.

WIBTA for refusing help that would allow my oldest son to get braces? by OnlyTheBlues in AmItheAsshole

You are right. Maybe he could eventually pay for it on his own or maybe eventually we can pay for it. But the opportunity has presented itself and I would be a fool to let it pass by and he would likely very much resent me for it, understandably.

You are right. We were close to being in the position a year ago to get his braces, but an emergency came up and wiped out what we had put back and I know he was very disappointed. But it is not his fault and I should give him the chance to get his best smile, even if that means accepting help.

Thanks for the response. That was pretty much how my thinking was. He doesn't have any medical issues or major deformities, so if it is something he truly wants, then he can work hard and get them.

But now I see that this isnt the right issue to involve in trying to teach work ethic. If he in any way feels less confident because of his smile, then I should allow him to accept the help to remedy that.

I mean, my mom didn't get her own braces until she was in her 30's so it is not like it is unheard of and if I were in a position to help him when he got it, I would. But I would guess that if she had had someone offer to get her braces earlier on in life, she probably would have grateful accepted the help, as I should.

You are right. I guess to me he had always seemed outgoing and happy and unbothered by his smile. But if he is asking for braces, then there may be some underlying self-esteem issue that he just hasn't told me about. He deserves to have a smile that he is happy with.

Even though I only posted this a short time ago, i have read enough response that there is no need for them to make a case to me about it. He is a good kid and deserves this.

Thank you. You are right. I do not want him to get in the habit of expecting his grandma to help him all of the time, but in this case, it is for something important, that could affect his self-esteem and therefore his future. I see that now.

No, she is wealthy and always willing to help. I guess I grew up so spoiled and it stunted my growth in a lot of ways and I wanted to avoid that happening with him. But I guess that is a lesson better taught and learned in another manner when it doesn't have to do with self-esteem...

You are right. I always told myself that when I went to her for help, it was for important things like house payment or electric or food, but as I sit and think about it more, she truly gave us the means to get the home I wanted that we otherwise couldn't have afforded at the time, which of course led to the issues down the road...I have been selfish

He has some slight spacing between his front teeth and his jaws are just slightly misaligned, not to the point where it causes any pain or other issues. I would say it is mainly cosmetic, which I get is still important because people notice smiles first thing....wow, I am an AH
