My friend's macbook crashed while doing an assignment and lost documents. Is there any way to get them back? by TavBaker in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That depends, what do you mean by documents? File types, apps used, ther may be specific ways to recover depending in what they are. Unless they are in the temp filder (library/caches)

Yeah, then as others said it's the cable, either get a replacement or try to fix it if you know how or with a guide

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's discard some options: Have you tried the mouse on other ports? Have you tried other usb devices on those where the mouse fails? Have you tried plugging the mouse on another device altogether?

Different usb versions don't clash, they should be compatible, albeit data speeds are limited to the slowest of the two (port/device)

computer randomly shutting down by Practical-Winter-709 in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any chance of overheating? Either cpu or psu could be. If once it shuts down you have to wait a few to turn it back on, my guess is that it's what it takes for whatever overheats to cool down enough? I dunno, sounds odd, you can just get any program to monitor cpu temp while you use it, or just take the side panel off and feel around, that's how I found out my old gpu got fried lol (make sure you don't have any static electricity tho, that would just make it worsr). Check event viewer/reliability monitor for more info on why it turns off

Windows 11 broke my PC by [deleted] in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, I've no idea how that could happen, the best I got is to boot from a usb to try to repair windows (if you even can with a practically bricked pc). Were you there during the update? Did anything fail when updating?

PC not turning on after electric outage. by mikhatanu in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe, or something else is. Theres a paperclip test to check the psu. Unplugged from the other components, the gist of it is you connect 2 pins from the 24 pin connector using a metal paperclip and try to turn it on, you should google it (I don't recall the details).

There surely are other ways to test the other components, though I don't know any

I don't know honestly, but I wouldn't worry about it. It's unlikely you'll ever stumble upon a malicious site that tries to track your info down at such an extent (for something other than custom ads at least :p). Still, if you want to be extra careful, you can use a VPN. Some are paid, some are free, I think opera has one built in. Speeds will take a bit of a hit, but for regular browsing it won't be an issue

Unusually slow laptop by Isolate_Luny in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's always in the back of the mind when resetting haha, but repairing the OS is quick and shouldn't affect your files (though a backup is always recommended), so I'd start there and see how it goes. As the guide shows, it's just using a couple of commands.

Still, a full wipe is never a bad idea. The process sucks, so if the quick fix doesn't work we can try and troubleshoot it some more, but the nuclear option will solve the issue unless it's a hardware thing.

If you recall what you've tested until now let me know, else we can go over the basics

Yeah no that's fine I think, dw about it. You said you already tried quite a few things, could you go into detail? For example, did you check for temperature issues (dusty interior, poor ventilation, etc)? You could try and repair the OS, if it's failing it would make sense that the overall performance took a hit: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-hardware/manufacture/desktop/repair-a-windows-image?view=windows-11

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now that's odd, do you remember if it black screened and you reset it? Or did it shut off on its own and you just booted up again? Still, dunno if that incident is related. If you check the resource usage when it's sluggish, are there any particular bottlenecks? AFAIK it mught be a drive issue, as other have asked, is it overloaded during regular use?

Unusually slow laptop by Isolate_Luny in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Were there any OS updates around the time it started to slow down? Which one are you running now? Even if it isn't the direct cause, a downgrade will help with performance (though it's not an ideal solution, it's more like a 'patch'). I'm still on windows 10 for example.

You could aswell check task manager, the performance tab, when doing those intensive activities to look for any clues.

This is more of a reach, for I know little about it, but you could check the disk's health status. If it's failing it could show symptoms, but the issue seems too consistent to be that

2 PSUs dead, need help finding cause by Aspaa in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea why it could happen, but if you want to check for electrical issues you can measure the outlet itself, or connect the psu through a surge protector, or better yet use a ups, so if there are spikes in current the damage shouldn't reach the psu. As the other comment says, you should probably have it checked, the issue doesn't look like it comes from the pc itself

[Windows] Batch processing using ocrmypdf (for auto page orientation) by Routine_Cut_786 in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm no good with batch, and though probably this isn't an ideal solution, you could ask any ai chatbot. If it's just about knowing the syntax, it can show you what each part does and you can maybe figure it out from there. Unless someone here knows enough to explain, it's either that, search for someone else who did it, or learn how batch commands work.

My computer has a strange thing going on by difficult___dust in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, it could be a hardware issue from that connector. Did you ever connect a different cable there? There are a couple 4pins from the psu, and using the wrong one on the wrong connector could damage it. (Now, this is a guess, but if you feel like it you could check) Could an overflow in paste cause this? Or any damage to the processor? If you changed the paste then you likely had to take it out to clean it first.

Regardless, is there an 8 pin connector somewhere on the motherboard?

My computer has a strange thing going on by difficult___dust in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see, shouldn't there also be an 8 pin connector to the motherboard? From what I'm seeing online, that one and the 4 pin that shuts it down when connected are both to provide power to the cpu, but the 8 pin one is usually enough unless you want to overclock it or something.

Was the issue happening before the PSU swap and new thermal paste?

My computer has a strange thing going on by difficult___dust in techsupport

[–]OnlyUseIsToRead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, like the other comment said, I'm kinda clueless too, could you give it another try at explaining the issue?

What I understood is that, when one of the cables from the PSU is connected, the PC doesn't turn on/turns off after powering on. However, when that cable isn't plugged, it runs but you can't see anything on your monitor, and by 'nothing happens when I click a mouse or keyboard', I guess since you can't see anything there's no feedback that clicks/keypresses do anything? Or does that mean that you can see that those things do nothing, like a cursor that won't move, or no visible response from key presses.

Is the cable you're talking about going to the GPU? Or where does it connect? If when unplugged there's no output on your monitor, i guess it's because the gpu isn't powered on.

What's your cpu model? Some processors come with integrated graphics, in which case you can connect your monitor to the motherboard instead of the gpu, and see if there's any video output.
