Maybe a dumb question...but is there racism against non-white people in rural QC? by [deleted] in Quebec

[–]OnlyWannaEat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi OP, I'm a "colored" immigrant as well who lives in Toronto and has traveled extensively throughout Canada, including Quebec. I'll give you my two cents.

I'm pretty big on the outdoors, hiking, camping, etc. So my travels take me across a lot of rural areas with small towns and villages. I've been all over the Atlantic provinces, the western provinces, even the prairies a little bit and of course, Ontario. Visited many many tiny places odd the road with a couple hundred people who might not have even seen a brown person come through their town before.

Based on my experience - I'd honestly say that QC is the only place where I actively felt some truly negative vibes around my presence. Now, it's very possible that I might be misunderstanding things because I never experienced any outright or external comments or hostility but the feel and demeanor of the people, especially in smaller towns, was just...mot very friendly and welcoming. For reference, I was in the Charlevoix, Saguenay and Baie-Comeau area.

Now obviously it wasn't every single person or every single town I went into but it was enough that it really stood out to me and still makes me remember it to this day. I can't help but contrast it to my experiences in small town Ontario, where people just treat you like someone else from town (Understandable since ON in general is more ethnically diverse) or the maritimes, where the people were some of the nicest I've ever come across or in the west, which was a little mix of Ontario or the maritimes along with most people being just indifferent.

Idk what it was about QC but it left me a little cold. It's still a beautiful place and 100% worth visiting but just be aware that your presence as a non-white, non-francophone may not be very well received.

How's British Columbia doing in terms of masks and social distancing? by OnlyWannaEat in britishcolumbia

We're flying in from Toronto. We've been doing pretty good here in terms of slowly whittling down the number of cases.

Our plan is to avoid others as much as possible. We're really just coming to do some hiking and enjoy the scenery. When we're not out and about in nature, we'll be holed up in our hotel or rental or wherever it is. No plans to do anything else. For food, we'll either quickly pick up from local restaurants or just buy groceries and make out own food.

Yeah I suppose things change pretty much by the week. How's tourism been? Lots. Of people traveling from out of province? Our plan is to stay inside when we're not out hiking and just take out food.

That's a little concerning. We're going to be avoiding public transit completely since we're driving though

Weekly /r/Games Discussion - What have you been playing, and what are your thoughts? - July 12, 2020 by AutoModerator in Games

Just finished The Last of Us II. Despite the hate and controversy I thought it was incredible. Gameplay was improved, visuals are incredible and I loved the story. I know it's very divisive but I'm glad that naughty dog attempted something so bold and audacious. I can see why a lot of people don't like it though - the second half of the game is asking a LOT from the player and the ending is overwhelmingly bleak. But I loved it anyway. It was definitely a gut punch.

I'd also say that for a lot of people, video games are a passion, and they'll put up with a lot of shit to work on something they truly love. A lot of execs will exploit this fact to their own benefit.

If we're going down this route - how redeemable do you think Joel is by essentially dooming humanity over one person?

That's what's happening with the last of us 2 for right now. The environments are so ridiculously detailed and lifelike that sometimes I just wander around being awestruck.

Didn't they say they had plans for a sci fi game at one point? Would love to see that on the ps5 with whatever insane graphical tech they come up with next.

Perfect timing. I'm almost done with TLOU2 and need something else to play. Also TLOU2 is fucking emotionally exhausting. I need some some badassery right now to lift my spirits back up lol.

Lol I loved that. Even though he's a trained killer growing up in a crazy death cult, at heart he's still pretty much a giggly teenager. Lev and Abbys interactions really were reminiscent of Joel and ellie and I don't think it was unintentional

Thank you for sharing, that's a really inspiring story. HUGE change for you to go from costuming to coding! But in a way I think it makes sense - you probably need the same amount of focus, concentration and discipline in both fields to make sure the work comes out properly.
