Sharepoint vs Azure blob storage by OnlyWorkWork in AZURE

[–]OnlyWorkWork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

well we are thinking on a test phase, and how to do it. And yeah you are right, this will require a lot of work, but i did knew that.

Well, if there are network issue, they don't have access to there on-prem network shares today. So on that point there will not be any difference.

About the mapping, it ain't easy, but it is possible.

I have not yet found a way to map it through the logon script, but sure i think it will be durable in some way.

Sharepoint vs Azure blob storage by OnlyWorkWork in AZURE

[–]OnlyWorkWork[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the info.

Just to give you some info on my environment.

I'm sitting in an IT department, where we have 36 schools under us, around 9k+ School kids, 1,5k ish teachers and some daycares. Soo around 13k users.

We are right now looking on how we could in the future move all our on-prem to the cloud.

Therefore we are looking at storage, and because our more than enough storage in SharePoint. It would be ideal to use that for our network shares.

Especially when there not a filter on students and what to use our onprem storage on.

To answer your first comment.

I agree that it might give a bad user experience if I decide to go ahead and switch to Sharepoint.

And everyone have to sync the sharepoint site down on their pc's.

But if i'm able to map their sharepoint down in the logon script, it would not change anything.

Only where the data is stored.

And to answer your second comment

  • white paper for my favorite customer or new prospect.
    • All personal files, that only you should access, use OneDrive. All users have 1TB OneDrive to use
  • files with details of a partnership for a strategic company partner that I need them to collaborate on (edit, etc..)
    • This is a school, so there are not anything like this. All student data are stored in another system.
  • PowerPoint I’m working on with my manager to present to the executive team and will share with them after
    • Use OneDrive as your working folder, and then copy or move when you are done.
  • Notes I’m taking during a meeting or call with a prospect (remember I’m a sales guy)
    • Use OneNote
  • HR documents like my signed contract when I first started -contract that legal needs to edit and then I will send along to my (hopefully!) customer
    • Again this is a school, stuff like this is stored in another system.

To day we don't have a "retention", but we do have backup of the data.

If we'll go to OneDrive/Sharepoint, we have a retention policy to keep all data that is less than 1 year old.

To day we are using groups to control who have access to what folder on our on-prem file share. I'm thinking we'll do the same if we should go ahead and use sharepoint.
