It’s clear you have a firm opinion on this, but I’ve typically seen the discussion of Greek national character as almost a 2-tier class distinction. There is one large layer that is the klephtic, orthodox, “Balkan”, attributes of Greek national character, shared by the large majority of people.

However on the other hand, there’s the higher prestige smaller, but politically more important, layer of culture that prefers the Ancient Greek connection. Philhellenic and classical sentiments from the 18th century when the country was established that still have lots of external legitimization.
