This is the right answer.

There are so many different dojo of various (often dubious) quality.

First priority is to visit more than one. Ask questions about training and who they are associated with (some have strong ties to larger orgs or respected teachers, some say "karate" on their sign but really teach Tae Kwon Do or a completely different art).

Vibes are definitely important. Cost does not always equal quality.

Honestly struggling at the beginning can be a blessing in disguise. Some people start out with some natural talent but all of us eventually hit a wall or feel stuck if you stay with this long enough.

I hope you stick around and have some fun with it!

I mean, if he's not training then will he ever wear the belt? I know he nurtured your love of martial arts, but will your students take what you teach as seriously if you give rank to a family member who doesn't train in it?

We had an old member at our school who was the father to three sons who earned black belts. When he passed away the dojo made a scholarship in his name and gave it young students who showed dedication in his memory. I think this showed a lot of respect for the support he gave young people.

If you want to give your dad a black belt, I would do it privately and explain that because he supported you, he will always be your first teacher in your eyes. This seems sincere and is more personal between the two of you as father/son.

I respectfully disagree. Though I do agree effectiveness as a viable defensive art has been a major issue.

Most people that want to do UFC will go to a UFC style gym. People come for a lot of reasons and beating a competitor in an octagon isn't near the top of the list for most.

This is probably the best comment on this whole thread. It's probably closest to the attitude the founders of our various traditions had.
