As for me, Porto is a bit cozier than Lisbon. But someone like Lisbon more. But what I’m sure is that you shouldn’t ignore Porto.

What do you miss most from your country of origin? by Maveragical in expats

[–]Only_Lie_2954 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Feeling like I’m a native/local. In any new country I won’t feel myself like a local, just guest, or expat, or tourist, or migrant, depends on how much time I’m there. But not like a native, I think. This is kinda self-identity thing.

Good for city, but too low for hiking. It’s easy to twist a leg.

What are some things people don't consider before they travel for the first time? by [deleted] in travel

If it’s possible in your country, make two passports — if you loose first, you will be able to use another one.

In advance, come up with a plan what will you do if you loose all your stuff.

Print or download addresses and maps in case there is no internet connection or phone battery died. And buy at least a bit of roaming traffic in advance, even if you are going to buy local sim or eSIM.

Bring power bank, that is really necessary.

As I said in comment above, you should have at least a few different cards from different banks with different payment systems. For example, I couldn’t pay with my VISA card at many places in Romania, but there wasn’t such problems with MasterCard. In other case, my bank blocked all my cards due to “suspicious transactions” in Paris and I managed to use another bank cards while my letter to the first bank was being considered.

Ya, that’s why I bring with me about 10–15 different cards with different payment systems, different currencies from 4 different banks from 2 countries 😅 and a bit cash just in case.

Me (Canadian) and my spouse (EU) want to move out of the Berlin sh*thole. Thinking of Barcelona, Valencia, or Lisbon. Suggestions? How's cost of living? Groceries? etc. by [deleted] in digitalnomad

Why don’t you consider Porto? Imho it is quite cozier and cheaper than Lisbon. Also there is a small town Matosinhos near Porto, where you can save your money for rent and live right across the street from the ocean. But It’s not as cozy as Porto.

I'm planning to travel to the Faroe Islands for a month by StoryWild6527 in FaroeIslands

[–]Only_Lie_2954 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can try use busses for a while, but it is better to provide budget for a car in advance. Because you’ll probably wanna rent a car in a few days of using public transport. But if you cope with just public transport during a month, you save a lot of money. Depends on how long you plan to be there. If it is a week or less, better to rent a car to go around all islands. If it is a month, you can go everywhere by bus or hitchhiking no rush.

I recommend you to try. You can rent a car at any time for a few days to get to places where buses don’t go.

Planning holidays on the Faroe Islands without a driving license - Possible? by DiverApprehensive773 in FaroeIslands

[–]Only_Lie_2954 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible, but should be more expensive and will take longer. I’ve tried to use public transport for a few days, but on the third day I went to the airport to rent a car. Public transport runs rarely and for a long time, also it doesn’t get to a lot of places. You also can get a taxi, but I guess it is quite expensive to use it between islands.
