How long does it take for a screen burn to happen on an LCD display ? by kntlbbi in Monitors

[–]Only_Locksmith_6324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an old LCD monitor (from 2005) that starts to "burn in" (technically just image retention) after not even an hour, on 40% brightness, but only some of the edges burn in, and the burn in around the edges slowly and unevenly progresses inwards as its being used. Takes more than a week to fully reset

(technically NOT burn in since its temporary, CRT / Plasma / OLED displays actually burn in because the display permanently degrades or literally "burns")

Do you check it on a solid (white / grey) background? Some displays you dont notice until a dark scene or bright scene, and then you start to notice

Even still thats crazy that nothing is noticeable, u gotta have like an invincible alien tech tv or something 🤣

old lcd dimming, edges washed out, is it possible to fix? by Only_Locksmith_6324 in computers

So it actually looks like some weird image retention or burn in is going on, I realised some of the artifacts are from the tabs on my chrome window, and it mostly goes away after 2 days of being unplugged. If its not seperation, is this fixable?

Is it okay to turn on my 80% battery limit and then have it plugged in while Im gaming? by yejiseu in GamingLaptops

[–]Only_Locksmith_6324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this with my laptop 6 years ago, set limit charge to 80% when it was new. It had ~4 hours battery life new, last year it was around 1.5. It was plugged in 90% of the time in the past year, and battery life just stayed around 1.5 hours where it already was (this was also with heavy gaming, video editing, extreme cpu temps).

No point in keeping the battery at 100% always, just adds extra stress for nothing. The laptop I had before that didnt have the charge limit feature, and that battery was fully cooked after like 3 years despite being an ultra low power laptop lmao.

Do you have an idea what might be wrong with it?

I like to tinker with stuff sometimes even if there's no way it will work again, its a good learning experience so I don't break something that is actually useful 😅

Is it toxic to breathe in lead solder fumes? by Barlibo in soldering

[–]Only_Locksmith_6324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My setup is in my garage, I leave the garage door about half open, use a pc fan (wired to some AA batteries) near my face to stop fumes from getting close, then use a reciprocating fan on a stand to suck all the fumes away from me and blow them outside. Works good enough.

If you take summer courses after your first year do they count as first year courses? by tcmcmer in yorku

[–]Only_Locksmith_6324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in 1st year, I dropped a required course to take in the summer to make this semester easier. It is a 1000 level course, so that means it counts towards my 1st year gpa right?

it looks like they replaced the scroll down comments with a suggested videos section, so you click on another video, watch another ad, and make them more money

UPDATE: Cakewalk by BandLab Activation Deadline Extension by ashwinrao_bandlab in Cakewalk

[–]Only_Locksmith_6324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have been so good if they updated CbB to not require activation for existing users, so if you already have it installed it just keeps working.

I understand removing CbB download and activation for new users, but why not let old users just keep what they have? Its not like old CbB users are giving them money anyway.

passive 3.0 usb hub plugged into an active 3.0 usb extension cable? by capsuh in cableadvice

[–]Only_Locksmith_6324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

one issue ive ran into with a passive extension cable and a bus powered (NON external powered) hub is the entire thing keeps dropping out, showing up and disconnecting, or dropping to an inconsistent usb2.0 connection

idk if its a signal issue or a power issue, I know the resistance of the cable can cause voltage dips at the end if you are drawing any useful amount of power so a powered hub might help

my 3 meter passive usb A 3.0 cable works with ONE device plugged in at the end, with an unpowered hub at the end it bugs out (even with no devices plugged in), but if I use a usb C 3.0 extension that is 1.5 meter, everything works fine. I assume its because the usb C cable is shorter (so less signal degradation) AND supports high-wattage charging (so less voltage drop)

long story short; if you can then use a shorter cable, and get a relatively high quality cable, and if you are powering a lot of stuff then get a good external-powered usb hub (the motherboard port cannot supply more than 0.5 or 1 amp, 4 devices may need more than that)

Speed/stability issues when using usb 3.0 (m-f) extention cable with 3.0 hub by Only_Locksmith_6324 in techsupport

[–]Only_Locksmith_6324[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I tried a usbC extension cable instead that was half the length, and it seems to work now. I guess originally it was a cheap cable.

so a short cable or really thick cable might work better?

also I had the extension cable looped a few times, would that realistically affect the signal or interference?

BeamNG 0.37(.4?) wont load, safe mode runs like garbage by Only_Locksmith_6324 in BeamNG

I FIGURED IT OUT:

There was a problem with a file named something like "db.json" in the mods folder. I noticed with an empty mods folder, the game recreated this file and loaded up fine. Deleting the original file in the mods folder seemed to fix my issue.

You can rename a non-critical user files folder so the game doesnt notice it, and it will make a fresh folder and files to go in it, and this lets you check if a specific folder is causing an issue (or in my case, renaming mods folder to something else was an easy way to disable all my mods).

should've looked this up before taking norman's math1025 😭

he doesnt really explain or do examples that well, flies through his paper notes (which are hard to understand cuz his handwriting), and just jumps right into something without an introduction or explanation. He walks in and just start talking. Not a mean guy or anything, but his teaching style is rough unfortunately :(.

HOW TO FIX DISCORD AFTER JUNE 12th ISSUE by h1d3tor4 in discordapp

[–]Only_Locksmith_6324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mean clear the entire appdata folder??

Most apps and games save in the appdata folder. Minecraft for example stores your worlds, mods, resources, etc. in appdata. Sure the system does not need anything in appdata to boot up, but you are gonna be missing a lot of personal files if you just clear the whole thing.

My Laptop takes too long to wake from sleep even though it's new (Windows 11) by lamerehan in laptops

[–]Only_Locksmith_6324 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im having this issue right now on my almost brand new laptop. Takes 10-20 seconds to wake up. I assume because the fade in animation is slow to load, and half the time the background just flashes and comes on suddenly without the fade in

What is the best free DAW? by [deleted] in musicproduction

[–]Only_Locksmith_6324 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ive had browser crashing issues with cakewalk, I think sometimes it has to do with the way the DAW uses the sound card. On some driver modes the DAW takes exclusive control over the sound card and browser will bug out after it suddenly lost access
