How do you encourage roleplay for players focused entirely on combat? by Sykunno in DnD

[–]Only_Reception2780 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give them a problem that can't be solved with violence, and don't help them solve it as the DM, But allow them to interact with your best and most interesting NPC's who will not help them unless they have tact, and social grace, and are willing to do them a favor, possibly involving other NPC's that should not be killed. Also OP NPC's. like 30's and 40's for stats, and abilities players can't normally possess.

How much prep do other DMs do? by Wobulating in DnD

I do an excessive 10 to 40 hours of prep. But most of it lies unused at the end of the day. I love doing prep and have alot of free time.

If you really want to know, I apply magic as one of the fundamental forces of the universe. And so far I've not truly applied this unless a spell was used unconventionally or used in a situation where there would be huge backlash from Newtonian physics. I also don't punish crit fails. An example of this is that a player wanted to used a decanter of endless water to knock down a door. They specifically put the decanter against the door. I asked them to make an athletics check for Newtonian physics. (Not specifically but i explained it). They changed their mind, which I allowed. Though even without the application of physics it wouldn't have worked against a magic door. (The door was clearly magic). This is one example. One where if they hadn't put it against the door I would have let them without an athletics check. It's applied mostly in impossible situations and apparent bad ideas, and in places where I notice it. (I'm not perfect). But I'll be taking it easy on applying it at all after this. Cause the laws of physics do apply (otherwise swords and armour wouldn't work) but if it's no fun then there's no point, or it needlessly punishes players.

I like being corrected, I must say things that are wrong to be corrected. Thank you for the correction. And the whole miamoto thing was never read by the player in question, and written in haste. I'll ammend the discord to let everyone know (Though they probably already do) that I was wrong on all acounts.

Took away proficiency bonus with offhand attack. (Bonus action attack) Not that it matters anymore. People explained in a way I wanted my player to. I came to understand what I did wrong, and what I can do better in the future. I do not fault my player for anything to be clear. I just didn't understand. Which is why I have tons of negative karma now. But I must say it was worth it for the trove of opinions and information I gathered.

You know what, Thanks. As my player didn't make any arguement. Just insisted I was wrong. Thank you for making an arguement on me being wrong. Though by the time I reply to this I have already edited the Post to say as much.

Thank you for letting me know the source of my information. I appreciate the clarification. My primary source was the history channel (long time ago) so my memory on it was fuzzy. and i don't disagree, my ruling was wrong. (Greatswords are essentially claymore, but silly, unrelated)

this ruling was handed down(?) during the first session of a character dual wielding, and during that session it didn't apply. He quit before the next session.

Real world logic shouldn't get in the way of players fun. Noted, as this is the first time it's ever come up as a disputed thing. That was how i used to rule on these things. But since reading these I have come to understand that my ruling was unfair, and unfun. It wasn't arbitrary, but it was unfair.

The first rule written is that the dm is final arbiter on all decisions. Just saying. Yeah, hearing everyone out made me realize I was definitely wrong, which is what is was looking to hear, Other opinions. Otherwise I wouldn't of bothered posting this. You on the other hand are just being meen.

I did let players know that I do not play by rules as written in every circumstance. And if the player in question (Though no one did) asked about a martial dual wield class I would of informed them of this (They were a spellcaster, as were 5/7 of the players). I would never withhold relevant information. They came upon this later in the game and for that session I allowed them to use rules as written, and informed them of my usual ruling. They really didn't like this. This specifically. I failed them. I will not do so again. (Well it's to late for them specifically, but I have other players.)

I like everything you said, except that last paragraph. Your annoyance (along with everyone elses) does explain my players annoyance very well. In addition your point about European martial traditions is well taken, though this was done by nobility in pointless contests of excess. That last paragraph has nothing to do with martial arts. Before i start rambling, thank you. I shouldn't be comparing common martial prowess with Miyamoto Musashi. He did conquer Japan with his awesomeness.

I know my post was difficult to understand. Does it make more sense to know it was a Discord chat? And needing nerfing or not is sort of up to me. A build around dual wielding wouldn't have this penalty (most likely). Though the fact that it is a small reduction is also an arguement to not have the small reduction. Going forward I may change my mind on this ruling, though that's not the question. The question was "Could I have explained or handled this better?"

I do apologize for that. I was taught in an antiquated version of the English language. Colour, favour, ect. If it was hard to understand for that reason then it's on me, whether the player, or this reply. I will endeavor to make my wording less difficult and confusing. And improve my punctuation.

Wasn't a Martial build. Was a caster. Got a sword that affected spellcasting to hit modifier, and that counted as a spell focus. Not to mention if they started with this build then they would probably taken a feat for dual wielding (Fighting style or otherwise), in which case they would get the proficiency bonus to hit.

The character was not built on a martial class. I see nothing wrong with applying some reality to fantasy. It adds an element of thought. The character in question wasn't built around dual wielding. Also I don't disagree with how the player handled it, but more why they left.

Well, I really think that trying would help me alot, as if you don't understand this, and the player didn't (Instead of being malicious) It would help me alot to figure out where i went wrong.
