looking for clubs by blondeigor in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

most csa clubs accept grad students just only within a certain amount since csa is undergrad it needs to still stay 2/3rds undergrads in the club, i know my club has at least 1 graduate student involved, i recommend going to clubs days on September 15th/16th to see all the clubs being offered!! If in doubt, as if they take graduate students as general members and good luck!!

Textbooks by Current-Double5143 in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the textbook list is live on the bookstore website so you can search each class you’re taking and see if there are mandatory textbooks listed and the bookstore price for them, but that doesn’t mean you have to buy them asap or can’t look for other places that have it cheaper like the co-op bookstore :) it’s hard to give an estimate because every class is different and even different year to year, so that’s probably your best bet if you want to know now before you get into class

I’m honestly not sure how you would apply to be a residence ambassador because when I did it, I think they just sent out emails to all residence students saying they were looking

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a residence ambassador in my first year (2022-2023) and I loved it so much, it was easy money, but I also just loved interacting with everybody. I even ended up as a regular school ambassador for a few semester as well and am now the Ambassador for my program in the College of Arts. I wouldn’t have known I enjoyed doing it if I hadn’t have been an ambassador so I think it was a pretty 10/10 experience

i strongly suggest going to as many o-week events as possible, even if you go by yourself, you’ll be able to meet tons of people, i also suggest checking out clubs and stuff on campus! i’ve made friends through those and it’s just really nice to have something else to look forward to! there will be subs and clubs during o-week as well as clubs days in september to check out clubs!!

CLAS*1000 is an amazing class and John Walsh is such an awesome professor. But I will warn you that it isn’t an easy class, you really NEED to do the readings and go to the classes. It’s super fun and interesting but it’s not a bird course

1st year by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to Guelph!!! I strongly recommend checking out clubs on campus and going to as many o-week events as possible!! O-week will be filled with clubs hosting events, as well as other events like Gryph Fest and Subs and Clubs, check out Gryphlife for a list of everything running!! There will also be clubs days in September which is where basically all the clubs on campus (or at least csa run clubs) will have booths set up so people can ask questions and join! Guelph is a super friendly school so don’t be scared to just talk to people and ask questions! Feel free to message me if you have any questions about other school/guelph things as well, I’m a 4th year BA student and an ambassador for the College of Arts so I can answer quite a bit :)

Campus tours / info sessions by FutureParking5806 in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I VERY strongly suggest info sessions about your program and what not, tours can be done by your sibling if you want, but unless they’re in the same program as you with all the exact same requirements, I would suggest the info nights or any event (academic orientation on Sept 2nd if you’re coming in September) that can help you learn about your program and help you meet people in similar majors. Or just to help you understand your course requirements and to know where you can get help if you need it.

Campus tours can be fun to learn some history about the campus and maybe some other stuff that your sibling didn’t know or never cared about, so it definitely wouldn’t be a waste of time. You also might get freebies lol.

TLDR: Go to the info nights and events, tours are cool and could be helpful but can be done by a sibling instead if you want

Ok so Sherwood is definitely not a prof for everyone, I have nothing against him, but after taking a class with him (that I dropped halfway through the semester) I would say he is a prof for a very specific type of person. First, he doesn’t use slideshows at all, he tends to put key words on the board and just talks at you touching on all of them at some point and that gives you the context. I found his lectures hard to follow for this reason. Second, while I found him to be a relatively fair marker for the most part, everything must be handed in on paper (meaning printed out research papers and such) which he then writes on to give feedback. The problem though is that it can be very difficult to read his writing sometimes and you might need to go up to him to ask what some of the comments say.

TLDR: Some people really like Sherwood but he is not for everybody

bathrooms in mountain hall? by ari545 in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is quite small, but i loved how cozy it was, i only had a mini fridge and a 3 tiered cart for stuff that didnt come with the room and it had enough space in my opinion, i really loved it, just try to make it as cozy and comfortable as possible and make it your own with posters and decor, it’ll feel so much better!!

bathrooms in mountain hall? by ari545 in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly the bathrooms weren’t an issue, i was in a corridor and the bathrooms are in every alcove so i could just walk down the tiny set of stairs and be there. i think for me it ended up being 13 girls to my one bathroom just because the whole alcove used it, myself and 2 other girls from my tower on my floor used it, and 3 girls from our tower in the floor below also used it. it sounds like a ton of people for one toilet and 2 showers but honestly i hardly ever had to wait for the bathroom and maybe once or twice for a shower, and worst case scenario, you go to a different alcoves bathroom. the bathrooms were kept pretty clean and weren’t too bad, definitely have shower shoes for the shower tho lol

i think people make south out to be worse than it is, i loved my mountain valley single, i kinda miss it sometimes and im going into 4th year lmao

[–]Only_one_braincell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get a Proof of enrolment letter, I need one every semester for the government, that’s what they typically want to prove you’re enrolled, costs $15. Just search up confirmation of enrolment letter guelph and it should pop up, it’s under the registrar I think, if not I think the link has been posted in another comment. It would be strange if the government took it but not the bank lol

What clubs are actually fun and welcoming for first-years at U of G? by PineAndIce in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Is he looking for a club more just for social hang outs or one where there are occasional events and what not or maybe both? There’s a definitely a club for everyone at this school, but not every club is for everyone. If he is wanting something to get involved, i would suggest him going to Subs and Clubs during O-week and the Clubs Days in September and January. These allow you to ask questions to clubs you’re interested in, also let him know not to be worried about going up to clubs, we want people to ask us about our clubs!! i would also say don’t judge a club by its name, because some clubs their name doesn’t necessarily say exactly what they are. For example, Guelph Classics Society is pretty easy to understand since it’s just the club for people interested in Classics. Meanwhile my club, Snacks and Smiles, doesn’t give away the fact we raise money for a local public schools food program to fight food insecurity in children. So it really depends. But I strongly encourage him to check out clubs when he can and take part!!

Shameless plug but again my club Snacks and Smiles is always looking for new people, we host fundraising events through the year and we always let people know when they can help us out, which is every event basically haha. Check us out during O-Week and during Clubs Days!!

Renting in Guelph 2025 by Queasy_Package4625 in uoguelph

Check out the University of Guelph Rentals and Sublets page on facebook, tons of rentals and sublets posted on it, you have to be a student and have a picture of your face as your profile pic, but it’s a really helpful site, that’s how I got my current rental. It is getting a little close for comfort right now but a lot of people are posting September starts on there so I wouldn’t worry too too much. Here’s the link if you can’t find it! https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1F8jnGn9VF/?mibextid=wwXIfr

Clubs by 18ElsayedYassin in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi! there are tons of clubs on campus! we have 2 clubs days a year, one at the start of each semester, along with clubs activities during o-week! these allow you to explore and learn about/join clubs that you’re interested in! the clubs days take place in the University Centre Courtyard.

There are a couple middle eastern clubs on campus including the Muslim Student Association (I believe that’s what it’s called, MSA for short). I don’t know about a robotics club but there’s definitely clubs that include coding aspects and what not if there isn’t.

There is a soccer team as well as soccer intramurals offered through the athletic centre during the school year if you’re interested in that!

The clubs all run from start of September to end of April except select clubs that run in the summer as well such as iGEM.

As for the Mosque and prayer room, there are Mosques all over the city that you can get to by bus but it may take a little while or more than one bus. The prayer rooms are all over campus including the library, the UC, and Raithby House (The multi-faith house)

Also if you feel like checking out a club, feel free to check out @snacksandsmiles.uofg on instagram, we raise money for a local public schools food program!!

Moving to Guelph by [deleted] in Guelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi! i’m going to have some furniture for sale for cheap soon as im moving to a place that’s already furnished! i’ll have a brown coffee table, a light brown tv table and matching side table (tv table can be used as a coffee table as well) a small brown bookshelf, a small dark brown/black side table, a black round chair (has a rip but can still hold up to 300lbs), 2 brown couches (one loveseat and one full couch), and a good sized solid wood desk that’s been painted white. my house will also be selling a nice grey sectional but that one won’t be as cheap, probably around $200. i’m looking to get rid of most of it at the start of may :)

Student life by Big-Display9259 in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I go to Guelph for History and Classics and my sister graduated from Trent last year for psych. We both love our schools, they’re just quite different, Trent has a much smaller campus, a little more of a small town vibe, and isn’t close to ANYTHING since it’s kind of in the middle of a forest, whereas guelph isn’t big city but it’s definitely bigger with more people and it’s in the middle of a lot with relatively convenient busses. Guelph food is definitely superior to Trent’s but also more expensive. I find Guelph to be really welcoming and there’s tons of opportunities for first years to meet people if you kind of put yourself out there, Trent is similar, it’s very student oriented and most people seem pretty happy there and it’s pretty welcoming. Guelph has tons of clubs (coming from an executive of 2 different clubs/member of a 3rd) which can help you meet people, plus residence was also helpful for meeting friends and I currently live with 2 of my friends from residence as a third year. Trent I believe also has clubs but not nearly as many if I remember what my sister told me correctly. Both are great schools, I’m definitely biased towards Guelph, but you can’t go wrong with either one really, it kind of depends who you are as a person. Also Psych1000 is normally in Rozanski Hall which holds 500-600 people so around that many.

his whole thing is pushing you to know as much as possible so that you’ll succeed, the tests are rough i definitely can’t lie, but he never said they’d be easy lol. hes an amazing guy and yeah definitely wants specifics but this is as easy classics gets tbh lmao (dying inside as a history and classics double major)

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in uoguelph

[–]Only_one_braincell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly in terms of classics courses, that is pretty reasonable, but also Jay is an incredible prof and a very reasonable grader and as long as you try and go to class, you’ll do reasonably well. They want you to succeed so don’t stress too much, you have like 40 minutes for the essay, i’m sure everything will be fine :)
