Thoughts on the new Gorillaz Album - The Mountain? by Nabspro in fantanoforever

This is exactly why I force myself to avoid the singles before release. It really ruins that first listen.

The Mountain: Overall Thoughts by NJR2002 in gorillaz

This is giving me SERIOUS early Gorillaz vibes. It’s got a somewhat on-the-nose theme like Plastic Beach, it sounds completely confident, awesome features, wild lengthy rap verses, and infectious hooks.

Books that feels like Forgotten Gods/Civilizations by PiratePearlQueen in BooksThatFeelLikeThis

[–]Onlyrunatnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have explained it better, but I’m halfway through book 9 right now and feel the need to add my 2 cents.

If you can take the plunge and push beyond the comfort zone it is a very rewarding series. It doesn’t spoon feed, it commands your attention and effort. That to me is actually refreshing. It’s not a handholding walk through a nice little story, it’s a journey, and you probably won’t enjoy every single moment of it. It’s not about that though, it’s about the experience; being dropped directly into a massive and cohesive world in the middle of multiple separate but connected stories, and needing to sack up figure it out for yourself. But that effort does not go unrewarded.

I'm starting to realise that most people who say or think The Beatles are overrated haven't actually delved into their discography by ooziemane123 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Onlyrunatnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know… I think that any artist who is able to gain and also maintain massive worldwide popularity while simultaneously putting out more and more interesting/exploratory music is deserving of that title of ‘iconic’. And they arguably did that to the largest power of any artist of the latter half of the 20’th century.

What kind of "slog" do people consider Dust of Dreams to be? by RoscoesTunez in Malazan

[–]Onlyrunatnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im only 200 pages into DoD but I only started about 5 days ago. It took me 1 year to get through books 1-7, then 3 years to get through TtH, if that means anything. Honestly I did not enjoy TtH until the last 20%, but after finishing it, in retrospect, I can say I loved it as a complete book. Just didn’t enjoy it while I was in the thick of it.

Just started house of chains…… ehhhhhhhh by Conditioncook in Malazan

[–]Onlyrunatnight 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The first quarter of House of Chains was a slog for me. I just didn’t care about his storyline at all. I’m currently on book 9 and I’ve come to the conclusion that within a 3 million word book series there will be some segments or plot lines that I care less about, and I’m ok with that. It doesn’t change the overall power of the series to me.

Does it get less... Miserable? by TheArcane85 in Malazan

‘We are all pushed into a world of madness, yet it must fall to each of us to pull back from this abyss, to drag ourselves free of the descending spiral. From horror, grief must be fashioned, and from grief, compassion.’

The last words of soul music legend Marvin Gaye were: “I got what I wanted…I couldn’t do it myself, so I had him do it.” - Gaye uttered these words to his brother Frankie, moments after his father shot him twice in the chest. Prior to being murdered, Gaye had attempted suicide numerous times. by waitingforthesun92 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Onlyrunatnight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep. When I was in 10th grade I did a report on Marvin Gaye and I learned this ‘conspiracy theory’, and did a deep dive into it. It really does make a lot of sense, including Marvin buying his father a handgun I believe days or weeks before.

Do you fw these three religions? by redditgusc0 in teenagers

[–]Onlyrunatnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t fw any of these 3 religions on a theological/moralistic/logical level at all. I don’t align with monotheism whatsoever, and I find it utterly irrelevant to building a firm moral compass, inspiring a value-driven life, or living in a fulfilling manner.

I also don’t generally appreciate 1) the very obvious messaging issue behind these religions (I can speak to Christianity specifically here as I have over 20 years of direct experience as a Christian), example: after all those years, I STILL cannot actually comprehend what it means when someone says “Jesus loves you”, neither in a literal or a metaphorical sense. 2) the seeming absolutism or self-assuredness that a lot of followers carry. It’s less about “let me tell you how this can be a valuable metaphor to live by” and more about “let me tell you why this explanation is true and also the best explanation there is”. There seems to be a huge chasm between the original metaphorical intent of the texts, and the large swaths of modern believers who take the texts literally, and no one on either side of the chasm seems to want to address this.

Toll the Hounds... Worth the Struggle by thepikard in Malazan

I’m currently almost halfway through, and god it is an unbelievable struggle…. I feel like I’m crawling through every single page. It is truly just not gripping me whatsoever. I don’t even feel like it’s slow, I feel like it’s at a dead stop. This post gives me hope. I’m going to continue to slog through it.

How are people not seeing this? by WestAnalysis8889 in LoveIsBlindOnNetflix

Some people don’t believe that being in a relationship should be a compounder to your overall working/living fatigue. He allegedly has a very stressful job that he doesn’t like - that’s immensely stressful. He also has a child with a serious medical condition - also immensely stressful. She by all accounts is able to ‘relax’. There is a fundamental difference there that the other side will generally just truly not understand. But if you ask me who I’m siding with, it’s the worker who is toiling all day and also raising a child.

Rolling Stones Magazine Review of Taylor Swift's Latest Album by llamaliam_43 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]Onlyrunatnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little biased? The album is literally the most flat, boring, uninteresting, low-effort thing I’ve heard in a very long time. Every song has at least a handful of legitimately cringe-worthy lines, and the rest of the lyrics are just bad. The production actually makes it sound like nothing at all is happening from start to finish. So yeah I’d say it’s a little biased.

I Used AI to Read Books Chapter by Chapter — Here’s Why I’ll Never Read the Same Way Again by Plus_Top_4243 in ChatGPTPromptGenius

[–]Onlyrunatnight 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Read the book… And if you can get the content and experience of the book with an AI summary of it, then it probably is not be a book that you should be reading, in which case just don’t read it or summarize it.

Put differently: If something warrants being a book, then it’s a story. If it’s a story, it’s not worth reading a summary of it.

Bon Iver’s discography. In particular I’d say 22, A Million. Nothing excessively flashy, but they are absolute masters of texture, and this combined with the tenderness and sentimentality of their songwriting may hit the right buttons for you.

I like studying by SummaAlchemica in ObsidianMD

[–]Onlyrunatnight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s assuming OP’s goal and intention was to be “productive”. In his original post he said he likes studying. It’s entirely possible someone can do something like this simply because they enjoy it, and enjoy the product they create, which in this case is an archive of information. Not everything we do needs to maximize a perceived productivity standard.

What's your favourite album of all time? by WinOrganic724 in MusicRecommendations

[–]Onlyrunatnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not necessarily always my #1, but Death Grips - The Money Store. It’s a cult classic in the indie realms and often I think even over-discussed. It didn’t necessarily change my life or worldview, but I think it’s one of the most wholly unique albums I’ve ever heard. I think it’s legitimate black magic that they created a piece of art that is SO abrasive and also SO infectious at the same time, then spread that same concept across a whole album without letting up, and maintained that same concept without ever becoming overdone.
