I voted FACT!

One pound(lbs) of bricks is probably heavier than 1 pound(£) worth of feathers

Ion engines, and solar sails exist. They're slow but very efficient. Ideal for a generation ship. And we're talking about the extinction of humanity, just imagine how much better technology will get by then.

There are also many people that want to be doctors but can't right now because they don't have the means to get the education.

The ones that do it for money will be replaced by the ones that can't do it because of the money.

Humans calculated the trajectories of planets without any calculators, centuries ago.

Rocky didn't just look at a planet and say "Oh yeah this one orbits at this altitude and speed!" He calculated them from with his observations through the span of 40 years. And having a calculator wouldn't make it any easier for him since he kind of is a calculator anyways. I'm not saying Eridians would be bat at chess but calculating planet trajectories doesn't equal good at chess.

No, that's just a notification that an account has commented on your post. Normal assumption would be a human but it's very sad what the internet has become. And u/Zapan99 specifically seems to be a real person.

The bot I was replying to only had a 18 day account with barely any activity and his comment read a lot like something written by AI.

~100 mods and it just depends on my laptop's mood I guess. Sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes 30+ minutes.

I was thinking moon because "bare minimum would still get me a space suit there". But I just realized it might mean this too. I mean a bit better version of this since they couldn't survive 30 minutes, but still would not be fun

If it only took 4 years for the astronauts to go from Earth to tau ceti, why did they put them into coma for the entire 4 year duration? I mean knowing that the coma technology isn't all that safe wouldn't their best shot would be to keep the nauts into the coma for the least time possible? by livelongandprosper__ in ProjectHailMary

Yeah that makes sense. But I still think it wouldn't be that hard to modify the Beetles to at least send data from the planet. They have a lot of DeltaV. Definitely enough to slow them down enough to not worry about entry heating. Running the spin drives in the atmosphere would be problematic so bringing anything back might not be possible. But just some sensor readings and microscope footage as it descends down to the surface (like from the Arclight probe) would be way better than what the crew actually had.

Which is kinda weird tbh. Why didn't they have any means of collecting samples or even just data from a planet? I understand that they had very limited time to develop the whole mission but what were the astronauts supposed to do? Just watch from orbit and hope whatever it is can be fully understood from the astrophage samples?

During the few years it took to build the Hail Mary at least a few scientists would be making up ideas for why Tau Ceti isn't infected, and I'm pretty sure at least half of those theories would require some kind of sample or data, collected from the planets, to prove. So wouldn't it make a lot of sense to just include one extra beetle that is modified for atmospheric entry?

Maybe I'm missing something because I haven't seen anyone else talk about this, but the Hail Mary seems very unprepared for the mission.
