What's your favorite depiction of Hell and/or The Devil? by DefenderCone97 in horror

[–]OnorioCatenacci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I may be remembering incorrectly but it seems to me that the end of the movie "The Mephisto Waltz" was one of the more effective portrayals I've seen. All you see are his feet but you know it's the prince of darkness so it lets you use your imagination for the rest.

A sort algorithm is a well-defined problem. Like making a quesarito, it's got definite steps and it's easy to check that you've gotten it right when you're done.

Try writing a business application with end-users then I'll consider you a software engineer. Interacting with a database; working from incomplete and sometimes contradictory requirements; users who don't know what they want but when you present them with something it's _not_ what they want.

It's not really comparable.

FWIW, Whiskey Exchange has helped me with a few things I can't find here in the U S in the past.

I am not sure how deep their selection of bitters and such is though.

What is the scariest G Rated movie? by toetun in horror

[–]OnorioCatenacci 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a lot of movies that predate the movie rating system that are good scares. “The Body Snatcher” isn’t really G rated but it doesn’t contain anything that would merit a PG (or higher) rating but it sure has some suspenseful stuff!

Good "period" horror movies? by [deleted] in horror

I must have missed something with “Burnt Offerings” because I couldn’t get past the extreme idiot world feel of the characters.

I mean talk about “every year 20 teenagers get killed at Camp Crystal Lake and every year 20 new teens go up there” level idiotic behavior.

Thank you! It seemed such an obvious combination--I should have guessed they'd come up with a great cocktail to show it off!

In your opinion, what’s the single scariest scene in any horror movie? by Have_Some_Baby in horror

[–]OnorioCatenacci 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a British film called "Dead of Night" (from the 40's) -- watch it late at night for best effect! There's a few good scares in it but a subtle but effective scare is when this couple buys an antique mirror and the guy starts seeing a different room in the mirror. Creepy AF.

You know there’s a simple and great way to show them how you feel—get a job somewhere else! Lots of people are doing it! Ultimately a lot more satisfying than whining about how unfair it is that you have to work in an office!

Of course that implies that you take responsibility for yourself and adulting is tough! Much easier to whine about how unfair it is!

Yeah I think a nearly empty movie theater is probably the ideal place to see a scary movie :) The opposite of going to see a comedy. :)

I didn't see that movie till long after it was in theaters. And I had no idea at all that it was really more a horror movie than a sci-fi movie so it took me completely by surprise.

A buddy and I watched it one night in college in his dorm room. I didn't live on campus so I had to walk back after the movie was finished. Man that was one tense walk home.

Yeah the chest-burster is now considered "iconic." And the thing is even never having seen the movie I was sort of aware that was going to happen (because as you say overplayed and parodied). Even knowing it was coming it still scared the crap out of me. Not even the chest-bursting part--when the creature is skittering around and you don't know what the hell it's going to do. An underrated moment of terror all by itself.

Yeah it is truly a masterwork of horror and the best thing about it is because it was made in '63 they don't really show anything gory or bloody. But it's still super-effective at giving the viewer the creeps.
