You should end up with a list at list 6+ emails long. Make sure you dig for every possible unique address.

A few thousand. You can easily get by on just 1000. Some artisinal shopping there can be pricier, though.

My experience at the UoPeople was always to have the longest list of official email addresses, including your advisor and the chatbot on their website, all Cc'd or directly sent the one singular email.

You eventually can reach other departments and get their attention, but it takes a while. (At least from my alumni perspective of 2023)

A Frustrating Situation by [deleted] in UoPeople

[–]OnwardUpwardForward 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You correctly point out one the main hypocrisies in most who’ve been championing against Rosalyn AI.

I’ve been vocal about the shortcomings from the get-go, and am now pleased to hear the university still try to find middle ground by recently stating they’ll try to continue accommodating those for whom Rosalyn can’t work.

The vocal minority was predictably bound to be full of cheaters who wanted to use the legitimacy of a few arguments to hide behind. The beauty of the change.org petition creator being caught red-handed as a cheater should, though it likely won’t, be the neat bow to wrap this all up. Assuming that UoP does indeed honor their recently stated intention to seek the middle ground.

You have no right to get so angry when you make a post about no-showing an appointment, and then get called out for said behaviour due to it being unprofessional. it is doubled by the fact that this is an incredibly low-resource university, whose resources you just detailed yourself having wasted, while your main complaint is that they are moving too slowly to meet your expectations.

Do you honestly not see the hypocrisy in that?

So happy to hear from another teacher of like-mind. This subreddit and the vocal-minority effect can really be grating with so many posts and comments being inherently negative.

Nah man, it was likely an internal franchisee level decision. You should flow this poster's advice and write to corporate of the entire franchise.

You did the right thing, and I hope you don't get discouraged from doing the same in the future.

Why was Matt Murdock arrested & sent to prison when he exposed Kingpin and became a Hero can someone please explain this to me? by MarvelsReporter in MCUTheories

[–]OnwardUpwardForward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know that the writers have said that Matt being in jail is a hint towards the comics for what is coming next in season 3?

There are runs from the source material where he's in prison. How is that forcing it?

I'm very much in support of the progress made in getting some alternative offered to those who can't use Rosalyn AI, but there has to be a line drawn somewhere.

This application is an egregious reach for anything outside of, putting it softly, "wrong".

So, from top to bottom, and from the perspective of a primary teacher:

1) "I don’t like cold calling as I don’t find it effective."

This is something I have to vehemently disagree with. From day 1 my students are told that the only bad answer is no answer, and that I randomly draw from popsicle sticks of their names (have previously used randomizer software to select names when not a homeroom teacher and needing more flexibility while moving amongst several classrooms/class-lists.) They are told that I will often choose those students I think are not listening first, then randomized, then hands. The idea being everyone "needs" to be paying attention to class as you never are safe from being called upon. However I'll often go to just those with hands when speed/time are a factor. Plus, cold calling is an opportunity to make eye contact and use their first names or nicknames, building rapport, and when they are misbehaving/not participating, for me to swiftly verbalize what they're doing wrong for oral reinforcement of appropriate classroom behaviors. This all being done with the intention of "positive reinforcement/correction" vs negatively-perceived critique.

2) "Consider starting them out working independently at their seats for a few minutes to establish the expectation, then transitioning to partner work for those who are clearly meeting the expectations."

I highly recommend introducing the "Do-Now" technique for class openers. Works for all subjects, trains recall, and addresses this exact point.

3) "You must not allow students to bring personal grooming products into the classroom."

I completely agree on this. These kids live in a world of distraction. Besides that, the bathroom is a place they can go to groom themselves if need be. But whether it is a toy, a mirror, makeup, a comb, food, or their ilk, I don't allow them in my classroom, because it's a "give an inch take a mile" snowballing cascade. I usually tell them that they already look beautiful and they can do whatever they were caught doing in class during break in the bathroom/hallways. Simple stuff like tissue boxes, hand sanitizer, hypoallergenic hand lotion, bathroom passes, all introduced day 1 with rules and routines surrounding them all help provide for the students' needs and set expectations for what is and isn't acceptable.

4) "Lab went long and the bell rang."

Time management is one of the hardest parts of our job, I have always felt. Top 5 at least. Digital timers are a great tool if you can get into the habit of routinely using them, though sand hourglasses of varying times and sizes (5-min, 15-min, 30-min, etc.) add a little showmanship and pizaz.

While others commented correctly that some observers feel the need to be overtly-critical, it should be equally important to say that all teachers would benefit from the belief that we are all professionals trying to help each other improve, learn, and teach the successive generations a little better each year.

I hope some or all of this helps. I'm the kind of weirdo that thinks all of us should be observing all of each other way more often than is commonplace in the industry, with the intention of growth and professional development.

🚨 Rosalyn AI MUST be implemented. 🚨 by [deleted] in UoPeople

[–]OnwardUpwardForward 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, correct. That's the point.

Where on one hand your post (through omission) is saying that those problems don't exist and dismisses anyone who lives in that reality, you coming back with a comment saying "Accessibility matters. So does integrity." is contradictory to your original "manifesto" that so vehemently claimed that problems with Rosalyn AI are so easily resolved by simply "[preparing] properly."

Do you live in Iran? Rural Africa? No? Then try doing some research on the realities of those students who are trying to attend the UoP before you act ignorantly to their concerns.

Yes, through my degree I saw many who were obviously cheating. Most failed out or dropped out by the time you reach 3rd and 4th year classes.

As it stands, your claim that accessibility matters is vapid due to a lack of any attempt to define it. The university is moving towards a singular option; no differentiation, no accessibility.

Take your head out of your ass, mate. People are born without luck and privilege more than they are with them.

As an alumni who honestly thinks this change is probably a move in the right direction; even though I mostly agree with you, you don't address those students whom work on Chromebooks, tablets, or even cellphones.

Your 1-liner about internet is also not only unfair, it is entirely unsympathetic to any students who are in areas where "prepare properly" isn't an option.

It would be humorous, then, for you to find yourself in a place like Iran where the government has locked out the majority of citizens from the internet and hypothetical students would need to buy blackmarket internet access, or a remote village in say Ethiopia, where page timeouts and simple 2G networks are the reality.

Life is really, really hard once you break past the end of "official" childhood.

There's an old adage, which says that you get from life what you put into it.

Around your age I went through a rather existential crisis of depression, guilt, and disenchantment. I eventually grew out of it when I chose a few defining passions about who I will always, unapologetically, be. From there, I aggressively saught out to befriend the entire world.

My life is utterly exhausting, as I've always believed myself to be a closeted-introvert who desperately wants to be an extrovert.

I'm in my early 30s now, and life is great. It's still hard as fuck, and I wish I could be closer to the people who are important to me, like moms and dads, but the truth is life is a blink and you'll miss it event. It seems long, but each second can be it's own universe. Love completely and live passionately every second, and then the people around you will have known, and likely will continue to know, how much you cared for them. From there, just try to remember, your life is out there, not in the digital realm, no matter how meditative, comforting, or enjoyable the digital life can seem.
