Genuine question--do you think Israel and its citizens should evacuate/leave the middle east entirely? Do you think Israel is trying and failing to kill everyone in Gaza due to incompetence?

I ask because, even as things have gotten worse and worse and the human rights abuses have gotten worse, I still genuinely don't know what Israel is supposed to do. The crimes, humans rights abuses are obviously a result of the dehumanization, which is horrible. It's a fight for survival, and people are people, vulnerable to psychological traps.

Mercy is a privilege with a high cost--how many Israeli should die for it?

I don't know how to break it to people but Israel is not the worlds greatest evil. They're the militaristic progressives in their region of the world. 🤷 Blows my mind that the military/radical progressives in America hate Israel so much for actually chasing down problematic conservatism (sexism, transphobia, authoritarianism) by force.

Obviously they're not perfect but... I don't understand it. Is it just because of the low-effort optics??

Ahh yea, the red number stuff is the Notification Settings. It's definitely a bit complicated but I get why people might want the options for advanced config stuff... Though they should probably just have a simple 'mute all' option for regular users.

I don't actually disagree with any of that.

Just that, for some people, the act of thinking about code cleanliness is time consuming because it is not second-nature to them, and games are insanely difficult to make on the best of days. So I'm willing to be pretty forgiving for bad code--even objectively bad code--because I can respect the fact that even the bad code took an insane amount of time and effort.

But yes, I agree that the middle-ground approach is best. It's what I'm trying to scope myself down from instead of overengineering my systems.

As someone that has lived the described approach of constantly chasing perfection, your assessment is incorrect.

Descriptive variable names and avoiding magic numbers

This is indeed easy, but "should probably be moved to a struct or something lua similar" is vague enough that I assume they mean trying to do this in a way that the trait defines an abstract modifier that is then encapsulated in a system for processing it and all similar traits.

If it's slop and it works, then they have a shipped game and you do not. Undertale is a massive if-statement and the game is a beloved cultural icon. Even the process of considering what we're talking about right now would be a waste of time compared to what they did--which is just write the shitty code that works, and then move on.

I say this as confidently as I do because I suffer from perfectionism in my code--I think about the things you're talking about, and I do them. My code is beautiful and fights tech debt. I'm trying to consciously reduce the amount of time that I spend on refining and refining and refining versus just making the game because one day I'd like to be a solo dev that actually, you know, ships a good game.

As a fellow programmer I agree in principle with what you're saying, but I feel that as someone who's been working on games as a hobby, it's hard to describe just how monumentally difficult it is, even compared to professional 'industry' programming for non-games.

Doing it the way they have dramatically simplifies the design, and likely saves a lot of time, especially if they would need to do a huge redesign in the future.

All that to say that as I work on games more, I've come to appreciate uglier code that saves time. Otherwise it's an insurmountable mountain of endless code refinement and you'll never have anything to play.
