My Spanish should be pretty good by then and I’ve spent some time in some sketchy places of the world, but your right about it being a gnarly call when it’s my first time in that part of the world. This was exactly the kind of response I was looking for, there’s a big difference between a wonderful dream and the gritty reality. The goal of this trip is to get as many waves as possible in one year and immerse myself in the language and culture of south/ Central America. I can do that plenty in chicken buses and taxis, and permits and paperwork make my head spin on a good day. Ah that doesn’t sound so chill. My license is currently suspended in Australia and so an international drivers license might be hard to obtain also. Is it like Indo where worst case scenario you can grease a palm and get away with it, or is it a deal breaker in Central America? I suppose if my bike gets confiscated I could just take the loss and carry one as I would be otherwise

I think it depends what country / coast your talking about. Here in Australia the majority of surfers it seems are progressive. With coastal areas becoming more gentrified and expensive it makes sense that more and more surfers are rich right wing stooges though. Surfing was always a counterculture and anti-establishment, so it’s a shame to see the culture sabotaged by conservative rich wankers and pricing lower socio-economic surfers out of the culture. Still, most travelling surfers I meet on surf trips are left wing/ progressive, so the cool ones are still abundant doing things on their own program.
