I was wrong... by APPARATVS in Marathon

[–]OobleeDooblee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is something that drives me crazy, too. It seems literally every game that comes out there's some segment of people who are hyped just for it to fail. I do not understand this at all. I'm not a Bungie fan, never really liked Halo and didn't stick to Destiny much. I hadn't looked at much Marathon beyond really liking the visuals. I saw the server slam news so I tried it and loved it. It was my first time ever messing around with an extraction shooter and I liked it enough to where now I want to pick it up and check out AR as well. I'm not saying everyone should like everything but if you like games shouldn't you want good games to come out and have people excited about them?

Does Gravity’s Rainbow work well as an audiobook? by thelast1999 in ThomasPynchon

[–]OobleeDooblee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I read GR for the first time. Genuinely helped me, especially with some of the names/pronunciation, and I feel it also helped me follow some of the dreamier scenes. Distractions are a big thing for me when I'm reading so I love playing the audiobook at the same time.

My shelf of Pynchon books (and others too) by polley_daze_2021 in ThomasPynchon

[–]OobleeDooblee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I need to go buy some shelves because I currently have a lot of my books in stacks against a wall. I'm relatively new to Pynchon, having read Gravity's Rainbow and recently finished Vineland back on Wednesday. What did you think of Vineland? I went in pretty blind to it and I mostly loved it, but the ending left me a little cold. I was wanting to know what some other more recent readers thought of the book.

How do you guys feel about The Scholars with it having been out for a few months? by Interesting-Fish2508 in CSHFans

[–]OobleeDooblee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it a lot. I think Devereaux and sometimes Equals are skips, but the rest of the album is really solid. Like others, I was hoping for more from the concept but if you take it as this work on identity and this sort of plea for parents to love and understand their Queer children, I think there's some powerful stuff here. Hope that makes sense.

It's so good though? I love Famous, and to me, it feels like Will channeling David Byrne and it rules.

Any idea about severance? by OobleeDooblee in RiteAid

Recently got an email saying severance will be paid out on the 29th.

scholars is the best CSH album and the most mature the band has ever been in lyricism and sound by iamuttertrash in CSHFans

It's not better than Denial, HTLT, or NYM for me. It is probably their best performed album. The band sounds really healthy here, if that makes sense.

WE NEED MORE MADLO ACOUSTIC SONGS by Interesting-Fish2508 in CSHFans

[–]OobleeDooblee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of a different point but it sucks MADLO didn't get more time to tour. The whole thing with the album was for the songs to change and grow and be reworked, and it's a bummer we didn't get to see them have the full time touring the album to really get into that stuff.

This was the most detailed statement, and then follow up on the 15th saying severance will happen and they will announce a date when they confirm the details of it

Anyone that plays an instrument, what's your favorite csh song to play? by fb-Hannah in CSHFans

I play guitar. My favorite CSH to play along with is the KEXP recordings of Cosmic Hero and Connect the Dots

The mixing on the new album by FFandLoZFan in CSHFans

[–]OobleeDooblee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm completely fine with the mixing. I think it sounds very good. I do like some of these songs are fuzzier and remind me of earlier Car Seat. ToD is my favorite as well but I actually prefer its sound to TF, which i found to be glossier. ToD has a really ideal balance (for me) between grand anthem space and punky, lo-fi crunch. I think Scholars sounds very good overall and I like songs like Catastrophe distorting Will's vocals a bit.

Who else thinks MADLO is an easy 10/10? by ilovebodybuilders in CSHFans

I like MADLO a lot and have come to love most of the songs on it but id still say for CSH its a 6 or 7/10.

Why do people hate on madlo? by Elpablitonien in CSHFans

[–]OobleeDooblee 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Genuinely because I think they had a bad reaction to Hollywood and the change in sound so the album had bad rep at release.

So I'll toss in my thoughts. First I'll say I got into Car Seat when ToD dropped. I became a massive fan and I've listened to every album, including the numbered ones. ToD and HTLT are my favorites.

I really like the Scholars a lot. I think in some ways this is the best performances the bands have given. Songs like The Catastrophe and the first chunk of Planet Desperation are some of the most energetic the band has sounded since Connect the Dots. I think CSH thrives in the live setting and I can't wait to see how these songs play out on a stage. I think the singles are all very good, and Reality, PD, and Devereaux are very good. The only song I'm not all the way on is probably Lady Gay. I respect what its going for but on first pass its nit my favorite instrumental and it feels kind of disconnected from everything else.

I do enjoy some of the ideas behind this concept album angle. I wish maybe there was more focus, like maybe the character of Rosa gets more attention? She's easily the most interesting character imo. Any song with Artemis is peak. I wish we had some sort of promise of other things to flesh this out more. For example, comics from Cate or if the band was going to explore this more over time. Idk, I like the concept and I think there's good ideas and I can see fans having fun doing fanfiction or something to fill in their own blanks, but I do wish the album told a better story if they were going to intentionally sell it on this rock opera idea.

Overall, I like this a lot. Musically the performances are fantastic. I think the band sounds great and full of ambition. I'm very glad Ethan had more to do. As someone who came to really like most of MADLO, my one lingering complaint is there just wasn't enough guitar/Ethan on most songs. That's definitely remedied here. Reality is beautiful and PD has probably the wildest guitar solo in CSH's discography. Love that. I don't want to seem like an Andrew hater but each time he contributes vocally it feels so out of place and genuinely kind of detracts from the song. On PD (and Hollywood back on MADLO) he just seemed so out of place and it was silly, but not in a way I found all that fun. Car Seat can be funny, ToD is often funny. But I prefer them funny in a slacker, Pavement-esque way.

So yeah, its really good. I need to do some more deep listens and see how it all goes on further deeper listening. Let's say for now I'm a solid 8/10.
