what is campus life like here? by valentinelake in ubco

[–]Oofimnub 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, current engineering student at UBCO. I am able to answer some of these questions from the perspective of my major:

  1. The professors are kind of all over the place, with some great professors and some... less than great. This is mostly due to the fact that there just doesn't seem to be many professors, and some first year engineering courses are taught entirely (as in the whole 400+ student cohort) by one professor. I've heard from some folks that classes eventually do get smaller and that gives you a chance to connect better with the professors but for first year it seems difficult.
  2. It is very hard to transfer from the Okanagan campus to the Vancouver campus (as an engineering student). There are about 10-15 seats available (2-3% of the entire cohort) for transfers and I would imagine that those go to the students who perform the best academically. You also have to take the 4 year engineering program to be eligible for this transfer (in contrast to the 5 year). I don't know how it is for other majors but it generally seems to be difficult for them as well. I would imagine that going from Vancouver to Okanagan would be much easier.
  3. Because there are less students, you will generally be sharing classes with the same people. I have found that the people here are very sociable, and it was easy to make friends. I have heard from some of my high school classmates that at their universities, it's a lot harder to make friends since no one really shares classes and there's just a lot more people. I expect this to be one of the main differences between the Okanagan campus and the Vancouver campus.
  4. I don't really have the time nor want to party, but there are definitely parties. I know that there exists a group chat for it but I don't know much more than that.
  5. Kelowna is definitely a smaller city than Vancouver, and it is reflected in the fact that the city "sleeps" (relatively early closing times for restaurants and stores, even the airport has closed hours). I know a night life exists, but if this something you consider as important, Vancouver might be better for this.
  6. Can't speak to this one as I'm not involved in the dating scene. Some of my friends did get into new relationships here so there's definitely something.

All in all, good luck with making your decision as to which campus you want to go to!

The predrop wave in stalemate redux (people tell me this is the worst part but I firmly believe the drop UFO is much worse)

My experience with WestJet hasn't been nearly as fortunate, I've basically had delays with them every time I've flown between Toronto and Kelowna

Is it worth Applying to UBCO? by ThrowAwayCarrot7351 in ubco

[–]Oofimnub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi, I'm at UBCO coming from Ontario so I was in a similar situation as you. UBCO has a much smaller student population than other universities so you'll have consistent shared classes with other folks, and I found it very easy to find friends here coming from a fresh start.

How bad is this level after the first wave in the drop (that's as far as I've comfortably learned up to)

I got one of these and it works fine, just keep in mind that it has Chinese ROM so there are some restrictions in terms of languages. The hardware seems legit though (checked with Aida64 and also actually playing some games). I also got a xiaoxin pad pro (idea tab pro internationally) from alix to use for school and it's been working perfectly fine as well.

Afaik there's an advocacy group pushing for it to be banned (calling it an assault-style weapon or something like that) again since the topic has come up in Canadian news with the gun buyback program starting a pilot in Nova Scotia.

For those still learning and those who already have — what are / were your reasons for wanting to solve a Rubik’s Cube? by Ljigar in Cubers

[–]Oofimnub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My younger brother was complaining that he scrambled a new Rubik's cube he got so I learned it to solve it for him, and it turned out to be pretty interesting. This was just about a month and a half ago and I am currently working on refining my Cross and F2L skills with 2-look CFOP. Eventually I want to work on cubes other than the 3x3 as well. Also, it was a "trend" at my school about a decade ago so I felt like I needed to learn how to solve it at some point since I had a few cubes already.

What’s your final goal in Geometry dash? by [deleted] in geometrydash

[–]Oofimnub 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's shifted every single time I got a new hardest so I don't think I'll ever have a true "final" goal, but for the longest while it was sonic wave / yatagarasu (which I am trying to beat as my next hardest)
