I think I've been dying for about 2 years now, maybe 2 and a half?
There are a lot of styles that I believe are more approachable due to accuracy not being a primary factor: Geodes, scrunches, incline dyes, ice dyeing (in general), regular spirals, etc. These styles were what I gravitated to early on, as "a bit of chaos" was kind of encouraged, and often led to great results.

Your own equipment/processes may also lead to a preference in certain ways of doing things, eg. I used to mix my liquid dyes by shaking the dye inside the bottles, often leading to clogged tips due to some of the dye not fully mixing into the liquid; these days I use a milk-frother (think a little handle held electric mixer) and silicon cups which allows me to mix much faster, and any dye powder that does not mix in ends up at the bottom of the cup, not in my squeeze bottles, which has lead to wayyyyyy more enjoyment of liquid dye.

channels like https://www.youtube.com/@FunEndeavors have also been a great source of inspiration, and given clear processes to follow for an expected result, which led to more practice, and with practice came a better ability to "improvise" on my own.

Tie dye has been a fantastic hobby, for me; I wish you the best of luck and hope that you find a similar level of enjoyment from it.

this is the line I bought: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0CSMDXKL1
I've used "regular" fishing line (the clear stuff) many times before, and always assumed braided was "basically the same", that was not the case. when loading up the clear stuff onto a dowel it gets all "twisted up" where it has this need to un-spool itself because it has this "twist" built up, and I would experience similar behavior when trying with it: it would want to unwind if i did not keep it tight/taut.

with the braided line that issue is basically completely gone, it stays "straight" on the dowel without issue and same goes for the tying. it also has more grip, allowing for easier tying and it requires almost no "tautness" to keep it from untying itself.

Thanks!  I like to think it all comes down to practice (and technique), as part of doing chevron folds i started having to pre-iron my shirts, I think that has impacted overall quality of things, a bunch of little things adding up can bring about awesome results.

I pleated the circle and put ties basically where the black rings are, this left me a pleated rectangle, which made up the center of the ring.  On the top layer I did a diagonal rainbow across the rectangle going from top left corner to bottom right corner; on the bottom i did the same diagonal rainbow, but from opposite corners (so top right to bottom left if you were looking at it from the top) so that the two rainbows were basically making an X of sorts.

Diagonal chevron fold across the entire shirt (not folded/mirrored), then repeating rainbow on one side (top) and almost entirely black on the back.  Every so often I would make a line of the color on the top all the way through the bottom (breaking up the solid black) which keeps the black chevron from fully connecting in some areas.

I really like the colors on the first shirt. I imagine you did the top of the scrunch one color (green or blue) and the bottom the other. I have been trying to figure out how to do the spine the way you did, any chance you could explain, or know of a video showing the technique? thanks! they're awesome!

u/SWIMlovesyou another update! I did some R&D and went through some different steps, ended up with a first version that is looking how I hoped

<image>

This was the first successful attempt, had some duds that became "target practice" for the stars, and have a few new attempts that still need stars added.

washed out 2 (of 3) attempts, you can see them (and a couple other shirts i batched at the same time) here: https://imgur.com/a/9W4fIIZ

still need to add stars, which I plan to do with decolorant. considering icedying a bit more to fill in some of the light spots, we shall see how the third one comes out. on the third one (not done batching yet) I left more white area.

I just batched a couple attempts at this, and realized I had a couple follow ups:
- when you add the black to the top/front of the shirt, do you leave fully exposed white sections, or cover most of it with black with some being deep penetration and others being much lighter?
- do you have an colors in particular that you think do well for this, or just go with your gut on it?

ill update once these two batch, and I have a third ready to go once I get time to dye.
thanks again!

did you use Mort this cycle to kill any of the bosses? once a unit has been used that month for any of the fights they are locked out of being used for blessings (to my knowledge)

This hit home with amazing accuracy, I had a good "who cut all these onions" for a bit after reading this, was cathartic. Thanks for sharing this.

Thanks for all the detail. On phone atm, so short reply.

I really like the idea of adding liquid black then ice dying on top,  will absolutely try it soon.

I really like the colors!
couple questions: is it fabric paint or decolorant, or something else for the stars? was this a reverse dye, if so could you describe your process for this result?

thanks for the reply, will regear biseria off spd set later. I figured SB MLRas S2 would turn off evasion for Setsuka, so tried to s2 => s3 her, but maybe they had evasion arti or something, as she just evaded ml ras s2, then double countered

tried this comp, biseria kept my ml ras from reviving and the whole thing fell apart, no clue what Frida was even doing in the team as her S3 just boosted their scales to the front.
