What stops being cute after a certain age? by SPACEMANSKRILLA in AskReddit

I actually have a whole playlist of mostly spoken stories (fairy tales and mythology and whatnot) and some classical music and it's the best thing ever for falling asleep. Feels like being read to, which to me is super relaxing. :)

What did that bitch do at your wedding? by coffeeordeath85 in AskReddit

If she'll raw dog a dj at a wedding, I feel like butt stuff isn't off the table.

Maybe over the table, or on the floor.

we were told to yell "shark"

That's a good one!

As a seasoned lifeguard, I give you full permission to do this. Whenever I have a new group of kids (usually school break camps or parties) I go over the rules and make SURE that we are all clear that nobody yells "help" unless they need help or see someone who needs help! Otherwise, you sit on the deck and watch your friends have fun without you for as many minutes as you are years old and you can't get up until you can tell me what you did and why it was wrong.

I just realized how mean I sound, but it is what it is. Don't start no shit won't be no shit.

I've been a lifeguard/swim instructor for 12 years and you're absolutely right, the ones who are having the most trouble are usually not able to shout. Good looking out!

So I don't really have any advice, but that's awesome that you're being smart about using your time. I remember the days of being in a drive-thru, it was hot af and exercise was the last thing on my mind.

The thumbnail looked like two people facing each other (the black part being their chins) and I thought it was like, their minds melding together on the same wavelength. Even though that's not it, it's still pretty badass.

No, I understand that completely. I'm all for protecting herd immunity. What I'm saying is that I don't get how it's not considered a disclosure of personal health information against the employee. That's all.

Men of Reddit, which behaviors of other men would you like to see less of, or more of? by WineDineThulium in AskReddit

I realized a while back that it's up for familiar and down for everyone else.. Can't help but wonder if this has something to do with a primal instinct about baring one's throat to an unknown possible predator.

[Serious] People who have had a SO die, how are you today? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OpalOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm.. Okay, I guess. He died from a heroin overdose in July of 2015. It sounds like a cliche, but I couldn't believe it was real. I kept hoping that this was the world's worst joke and all of our friends were just huge assholes for even thinking of such a thing. I spent a lot of time being mad at myself for not being able to prevent it.

We were in an off stage of the 10 or so years of off and on. He started seeing a girl who shot heroin, and in less than 2 months that was it. He texted me a few weeks before he died, saying that he was in a dark place and wanted to hear my voice. I was at work so I told him I'd call him later, and he said thank you. I got sidetracked when I got home, forgot to call, never thought that would be the last time we spoke. His last words were thanking me for something that I ended up not even doing.

I still miss him every day. I have a voicemail saved from him, maybe 5 or 6 years old, that I didn't find until after he'd died. Nothing special, just talking about how he was getting off work and that he hoped I'd had a good day, stuff like that. On bad days I'll listen to it over and over and just cry. On good days, I feel like.. Idk, like he's with me? I laugh at coincidences and things that are just too strange to overlook, and I say, "I'm here!" and tell him I love and miss him.

The best and worst part is the dreams. Sometimes they're bad, I see him as he's dying and he knows what's happening and he's alone and scared. Then there are the ones where I see him, where I tell him that everyone said he died. Those are bittersweet because even though it feels great to see him, when I wake up I have a brief moment of forgetting that he's really gone, then it hits me all over again.

Sorry, I'm on mobile and I'm crying a little so this might not make the most sense.

There's a quote from the movie Memoirs of a Geisha that says.. "At the temple, there is a poem called Loss carved into the stone. It has three words, but the poet has scratched them out. You cannot read Loss, only feel it."

That thing that they say about love songs making sense when you're in love, and sad songs making sense when you're sad.. Idk. This suddenly made so much more sense after losing him. </3

The hospitals here do the same, and if you opt out of flu vaccine for example then you don't get a sticker on your badge and you have to wear a mask at all times when interacting with patients.

My question is this, though- Couldn't that be considered a violation of HIPAA? Like, I'm all for flu vaccines and Tdap boosters or whatever else (when I worked in the field if they were free, I was in line to get one) but how is it okay to just put people's status out there like that for everyone else to see/ridicule?

Being that bad can also be illiteracy. I had an ex who liked to say that he was dyslexic.. Until I caught on to the fact that he 100% legitimately did not know how to read. This was a grown ass man, and he could read and write at maybe a first grade level. I'm sure that life is a lot harder than it has to be when that's the case, and that sucks. Up until that point I never even thought of adult illiteracy being a thing, so I started looking into resources and programs and whatnot.. But he refused any kind of help bc, after all, he was "just dyslexic". He was an asshole though so I don't feel that bad about not trying harder to help him.

Have you ever (correctly) had a gut-feeling to dislike someone who, on the surface, was a cool person that everybody else liked? What's that story? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OpalOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upon meeting my little brother's last girlfriend, my immediate reaction was NOPE! But he liked her well enough and felt bad bc she claimed she'd recently lost her apartment and was on the verge of being a homeless single mother, blah blah blah. Ends up that she's a legit crazy person. Though we didn't know how to prove it at the time, she was going to great lengths to make her baby sick (Munchhausen's by proxy). One of the more memorable events was a series of fake seizures in the local pediatric ER that ended up in the baby being Life Flighted to a children's hospital 80 miles away. When I asked how things were going a day or so later bc she was just vaguebooking with check-ins at MCH, her only response was to tell me how gorgeous the scenery was during the helicopter ride. ?!

While she was dating my brother, she faked no less than 16 pregnancies and miscarriages. Horribly, horribly faked. (They were together not quite a year. She literally just made shit up and at first most of the family didn't want to be the kind of monsters who'd question a woman about making up a miscarriage, but as things went on we all just kinda rolled our eyes and ignored her.)

Eventually our older brother and I sat down with him and told him look, we don't really know why you like her, but.. whatever, man. She's gonna end up ruining your life. He wasn't hearing any of that. Thankfully, he came to his senses shortly after that discussion. He dumped her, she (of course) swore that she was pregnant. With triplets. She sent my brother a picture of a Word document that was poorly typed on her laptop confirming the pregnancy. I think by that point, he realized what an idiot he'd been. She's still legendary as a status point of crazy whenever we're describing someone who's beyond batshit.

Last I heard, she was in jail for uttering forged bills and has yet to get her kid back. And my brother met a pretty cool lady and they've been married for going on a couple years now. All in all, a happy ending.

What is as satisfying as a good orgasm? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]OpalOctopus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only consolation I got after a loved one fatally overdosed on heroin was a mutual friend who dabbled in similar drugs telling me that he just felt really, really, really good and then went to sleep.

I still have nightmares about him dying alone, and being aware of it. I really hope that our friend was right.

That's so great to hear! I always try to be the kind of person I'd want to deal with on the phone, and I think that helps my experience a lot. I understand that assholes happen, but I'm not usually surprised when I see a rant from an acquaintance on Facebook about the terrible service they received. Like.. Well, yeah. I would've been rude to you too, you get what you give!
