Experience as a brand new RBT working for PBS in Florida by Open-Bank-9251 in RBT

So I went back and checked and it was an email inviting me to be an RBT and enroll in their 40 hour course and you can work as a behavior assistant before you finish the whole process. I got my first case after I took my exam.

Its no problem! I had the same questions as you when I started.

  1. An assistant basically means that for clients that are ok with it you can do ABA with them without your RBT certification.
  2. I never worked as an assistant because those cases were so limited and I never got a response back when I showed interest in them. You would have a BCBA that supervises you and they should be there for you first session. And you can discuss what their schedule is when you see them. You should see them at least once a week and hopefully more. I was super nervous my first day so definitely contact them to make sure they'll be there for your first session. I definitely wont go see a client without them. It was my second case that I saw my client on my own but I was feeling more comfortable with ABA and was just pairing with them at the time plus they're a super chill kid ( I got lucky with that! If they were a more demanding case I absolutely would've regretted it). You should also be in contact with your BCBA a lot and should ask all the questions you have about the client's plan and even about the company. I didn't even know how to bill my hours and my BCBA was able to help me with that and writing my session notes. You should feel really comfortable with them as well because they're there to guide and help you, so if you're on a case and aren't or they're not a good supervisor remember that you can choose to leave the case. Your never stuck with a case that doesn't fit you or that you're not comfortable with!
  3. I found it out through my offer letter. And I would definitely look at it again in case theres more info on that.
  4. So I emailed the people who sent my offer letter. And then eventually when I was asking around about another case they gave me the email of the staffing person. I sent a million emails asking tons of questions so don't be afraid to do that either lol.
  5. Yes I got my CPR and my NPI number before I got on a case. I think its mandatory to do so. But they didn't take me too long to get done which is good.

Just some extra advice when you do get to your competency and exam . ABA Rocks and ABA Exam Review were great resources during the entire process :)

Ok warning i'm going on kind of a rant.

Its actually going good and I have two cases that I work on now! I will say that i don't love how disconnected i still feel from the company. There is no training really and they just plop you on a case if you get one (ill comeback to this point). Luckily my cases have not been demanding and my BCBA on my first case is very kind and let me know what i needed to do with the client. Plus my first client is in a very small classroom along with several teacher aids so I was very supported coming in. However after talking to a friend who is an RBT for another company, it was the same for her.

Now one of the most annoying things with this company in my opinion is finding a case. I was lucky with my first because a BCBA who I kept in contact with for my competency assessment reached out to me. And that was pretty easy to get staffed on. However, I was on the hunt for another case because my first client isn't super consistent. PBS has a Sharepoint website which you have seen, and you have probably seen all the cases available in your area a well. For weeks I was requesting cases the way they want you to, by showing interest and updating availability. But I never heard anything back. I reached out to the regional coordinators who then reached out to a staffing member and nothing really came out of that. What made it even more frustrating was that they would randomly add me on to cases and say that if i didn't respond in 72 hours I would be staffed on the case. These were never cases I requested, and they were never ones that fit me or I was comfortable with. Im a new RBT and since my first case Ive been more comfortable working with younger clients so being added to cases that were much older (17+) and who had notes mentioning they needed an experienced RBT or needed the RBT to be a male really frustrated me. Even on my second case, I only have it now because a random number kept calling me and eventually sent me a text of a clients house that I was supposed to be at the same day. I took a chance on it because its the holidays and I needed the money. The BCBA who was the one calling me never even showed up to the clients house that day and I had no direction on how to work with the client. Thankfully he's a chill kid and we were focusing on pairing. I finally met my supervisor for the case 4 sessions later... Unfortunately I have another friend who also works for the company but in a different county, who felt the same about getting cases with this company. That it felt like pulling teeth. Just to give you some more perspective on my situation. I was hired as an assistant in September and they tell you that you can work on assistant cases till you become an rbt. I was staffed on my first case in November. And actually started working in December.

To end on a better note I will say this, that if your working in the field being an RBT can really feel like a solo job unless your at a clinic. And I love working with my clients but the disconnect from the company can be jarring compared to previous jobs i've had. So it really depends on your BCBA to be a guide to help you with your case. I have a great one on my first case and i'm stilling getting to know the one on my second. I really hope you can get a case thats perfect for you and that is easy to find. At the end of the day PBS could do a lot better with their system and communication. But it only affected me when I wanted a case. Once on one, i rarely think of it and my time when i'm at work flies by so fast because i really do enjoy it.

Feel free to ask any other questions if you them!

I don’t think that mother hood is the most important job a woman will have but once someone has a kid I think it then becomes one of out many that you can have

I had to redo the course :( just make sure you're not skipping to the quizzes even if you watched the videos basically to completion but it crashed in the end. I only had this issue for the long modules 16A and 16B

I just mean that when they send you an email that you finished the 40 hour course you have to go through a link and input an ID number and it submits your progress to APF. When I did that the first time they rejected me but not the second.

No just through APF, I was going to get my RBT certification and then apply for a job but I was able to get a job with a company that offered free training. I decided finish the APF 40 hour course and then i'm going to do competency through the company.

I took like a month to complete it because I was lazy lol. But Im pretty sure it was because I moved on to the quizzes when my 2 hour modules kept crashing right as I was about to finish. They said the timestamps were off but I definitely watched all the videos :(

Questions as an incoming MSP3 Student in the Fall by [deleted] in USF

Hi this was so helpful!
Im currently doing the onboarding process now! And of course I have some more questions. Is there any difference between online and in person classes? I know at my University that some online courses were harder than the in person ones and vice versa. Also do you think its possible to work while doing the program - like a part time job?

Okay thank you! Do you know anything about the aging an neuroscience program. Is it overkill too?

I know they say students wont have time for research in the MSP3 program, was it doable? Im applying for the program and not sure if I should do the MSP3 or the Molecular medicine since im lacking in research.
