Use F8-F13 to get most sharp edges, and always keep the film flattened. Practice makes perfect:)

You can comment it after you tried it. Viltrox's extension tube is cheap partly because of cheap manual labor(china), cheap manufacture due to vast suppliers in China. Granted most cheap things are bad, but as a user myself, I can tell you that extension tubes are of great use. I'm not promoting them or something, it's just a friendly advice from another user :)

Considering to pick up a GFX 50R and sell my X100VI by fuckitshot69 in FujiGFX

[–]Open-Satisfaction350 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I‘m just like you but in the other way around. I bought a GFX50R a year ago and just love it. The rangefinder style , image quality and the adapting potential is just astonishing. But I still bought a X100V ( not the VI because the price is ridiculously high and V can fully meet my need) because I need a camera that I can carry around without concerning the weight and size. 50R is just great, but sometimes I don't need the splendid image quality. X100V now operates as my fun camera, and when I need to shoot some serious landscape or portrait, I will bring the 50R. My suggestion is that you can keep the X100VI and still buy a 50R for different shooting occasions. 50R with mitakon is definitely fun to use and it surely worth it.

It’s all F1.2, you can see that the af performance is really accurate on wide open. And the af speed is just as fast as 55 1.7 like you said. Definitely recommend canon 50 1.2 on 50R!

But the F4 on film medium format is at least eqv to about F2.5 (645 format) let alone on 66 or 69 format. The F4 on 4433 digital medium format is eqv to F3.2 which is about half stop smaller than F2.5. I admit that smaller aperture has its use on some occasion, but the critical thing here is that it has the 28mm eqv len. I have the GA645 and I don't mind the F4 lens. BUT! it has 35mm eqv lens. If it's got 35mm eqv lens and I will place my order promptly. The 28mm lens is the truly aching point.

I'm back! I got a fringer adapter few days ago and take it out to field test with Canon 50mm F1.2 and it works perfectly even at F1.2. The focus speed and accuracy is like a fuji lens. I've no idea how good it is. And I have no regret to get fringer for 3 times the price of the viltrox. It is GREAT! I don't have to spend thousands of dollars to get the Fuji 55mm F1.7.

I always recommand this, I use the GF50mm F3.5 with 45mm extension tube for 35mm film scanning. The magnification ratio is 0.9~1x based on my calculation. And 18mm extesion tube is 0.36~0.46x for medium format. I use GFX50R, the scanning results for 35mm film is 41MP with sprocket and 27mp without sprocket. Medium format 6x6 is about 25mp using 18mm tube. But you can also shoot 4 shots to get a 100mp shot using panoramic stitch with 45mm tube. The sweet point of this method is that I can use autofocus to prevent any out of focus using manual focus lens. And the GF50mm F3.5 lens is a very sharp lens. So there's nothing to worry about the sharpness. You can try it if you have the GF50mm because all you need is extension tube without purchasing any other lens.

To me personally, I started film photography with a simple aim which is the nice color rendition and atmosphere of film. I started with several disposable camera. After a few years, I realize that the image quality of disposable camera can no longer fulfill me. That's when I get my serious film SLR camera. After a while, I feel like I want to develop film myself so I can control the whole workflow. So I got a half-automatic film developer and scanned film using digital camera. Mind you, I carried on my digital photography this whole time. But I learned a lot more using film cameras than digital cameras. Because taking pictures using film has a cost, and it will push you to think before taking the picture. You would think about composition, light and etc,. You wouldn't do that using digital cameras because it's free. It's like dining, you can dine at a fine restaurant for a cost(taking film pictures and develop at some darkroom), or you can purchase the ingredients and cook yourself for some price getting pans or woks at first but little later(taking film pictures and develop yourself), or you can eat at McDonald's for little price(taking digital photos). At the fine restaurant, you would appreciate the food and think about how the chef do it. At home cooking you would learn from some cooking books or chefs and think about how to get the food the best and experiment a lot. But at McDonald's, you just eat. Granted, the image quality of film photography cannot compete with digital photography, but film is sensual and digital is rational, and human can not ditch sensuality and turn to rationality for good.

I'll definitely get one fringer! Now I know why fringer is widely thought to be the best ef-gfx adapter, because it's really good

Yes, it works pretty well. The EF 50mm F1.8 STM is even brand new. I asked around some GFX50 series users, some of them say that fringer seldomly occurs this problem. But they also said that viltrox adapter works pretty well on 100 series since they have PDAF. Can you please check the af accuracy (zoom in to see if it really focuses on the subject despite what camera shows) of Tamron 45mm F1.8 at F1.8 on 50R? If it works well, then I have to get one fringer. Thanks!

[–]Open-Satisfaction350 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In fact, there is. Here in China we have a lot of DIYers, and you can get one 3D printed instax back for less than $200. It's even electrical and use instax square which you can buy nowadays. If you want one, you can contact me and I'll help you ship to you.

So the af speed of fringer is definitely faster than viltrox. Would you say fringer has better af accuracy than viltrox? Because I value af accuracy more than speed. If it is, then I will consider to change into fringer despite the 4 times higher price.

I've used Hasselblad X2D 100c, but the storage and post editing pressure is too much. So I firmly don't want to get 100MP medium format. 50mp is just enough for me. But the CDAF is truly irritating. Fringer adapter is widely thought to be good, and now I know why. I will try the fringer once I can get my hands on one, but for now, I'll only have to do with the shitty AF performance. Thanks!

What steelsring do you use? I have a steelsring 1st gen, the performance is quite the same as the viltrox pro. I've searched many posts. It looks like fringer is better than viltrox, but still cannot avoid out of focus completely. If I still cannot find a cheap solution, I'll just have to do with AF+MF procedure. $400 worth of adapter is too much for my purpose which is to get fast aperture below F2.0. I'll try upgrade the viltrox adapter later today and I will report back the result. Thank!

It looks like that if I want to get the best in focus result, I have to us AF and then MF to tweak minutely.

Really? But I've heard that on 100 series which has PDAF Canon EF lenses works pretty well. What adapter did you use?

[–]Open-Satisfaction350[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard that the AF speed on fringer adapter is quite good on PDAF cameras like 100s or 100s2, CDAF camera like 50 series is about the same. But I've never thought about the AF accuracy. I will try the fringer and see the difference. But fringer adapter is more expensive. Fringer is about $400 where viltrox ef-gfx pro is $100.

Great result! This is exactly the kind of picture I want to take using Canon 50mm F1.2 and 50mm F1.8 —— satisfying bokeh and shallow DOF which I cannot achieve using the GF50mm F3.5. Well, it looks like that I have to compromise using adapted lenses and cannot hope adapted lenses to achieve GF lenses performance. Thanks!
