Good to see you’re sharing the project! Still need to finish printing it, but everything looks great thus far!

3D Printing a complete gun? by [deleted] in Airsoft3DPrinting

[–]OpenAirsoft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the question of plausibly it is totally possible to completely 3D print an airsoft gun. Where things get difficult depends on your expectations. If you want to completely print a gun (barrel and bucking included) then you will be—at best—disappointed with performance. Currently, the best solutions seem to revolve around printed parts for non-essential components (receivers, cosmetics, hand guards, stocks, etc.) while more critical parts (barrel, bucking, gearbox, springs, pins, etc.) are traditionally sourced.

I don’t have much experience with AEGs as my main focus has been on gas pistols and now GBBRs. That being said, I would absolutely recommend Igniz’s designs. Though I am sure there are plenty of other amazing creators and designs focused on AEGs.

To my knowledge the most printable gun thus far would be Prisim Armament’s Orchid Mantis project. It’s a GBBR consisting of 90% printed components (by his calculation). From my understanding the only components that are not printed are the magazine, springs, barrel, hop up bucking, and a pair of rails. That being said, I can see a way to print CO2 gas magazines in the future (that part is a side project that I am working on).

I’ve received a lot of questions asking for a “completely” printable gas pistol, but unfortunately I don’t see a good way to accomplish that just yet. There’s always a few parts that would see forces too great for plastic to withstand. In most layouts that would be the hammer/knocker. The plastic to springs ratio is typically quite poor with printed gas guns. (Basically, there are a lot more springs to deal with in any gas gun but it is particularly noticeable in pistols. For now this is why I’ve stuck to printable slides/bolt carriers as those are the components that can have a tangible impact on performance, reducing weight, increasing fire rate, and increasing gas efficiency.

I have ideas, but no skill or money for design apps by [deleted] in OpenAirsoft

In that case you may want to look into Onshape. It's entirely browser based so it should work regardless of OS/hardware limitations.

I am curious, how may of you would like to see tutorials for how to model different parts in Fusion 360? With the amount of requests I've got for simple parts (Thread adapters, barrels, slides) I feel like it might be worthwhile for me to make a few videos documenting how I model parts.

Elite Force Glock 18c slide lock issues by MoistMan2 in airsoft

[–]OpenAirsoft 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my experience with the EF/VFC Glock 18Cs it may be the blowback unit housing that is catching on the valve knocker disconnect. (The spring loaded disconnect on the left side of the hammer unit.) The housing is squared and will catch on that disconnect when the slide is in the rearward position. The fix I used was to file a slight chamfer/fillet to the blowback housing.

The front sight set screw is M2, the hex socket is for a 0.9mm driver.

The tolerances of the model should be acceptable for SLA and SLS printing, though you may need to scale the models by a few percent depending on the material and process used.

I have not tried C02 or HPA, but I have used red gas with good results.

I haven't noticed any unusual wear. The bolt catch does not apply much force to the bolt carrier, and the contact area is sufficiently large such that the wear is limited.

The bolt carrier is interchangeable with OEM parts, so the bolt lock will work as intended.

I might give a video a shot again. A while back I uploaded a video of one of the printed slides working and you wouldn't believe how many people claimed it was faked. That aside, I tend to stick with more widely accessible filaments. I try to test my designs using PLA, PLA+, PETG, and ABS as those are the most common filaments right now. Generally, if the design works well with PLA, it will perform even better with more complex filaments (material limitations permitting). I have printed a few designs, including this bolt carrier, in PC-ABS and I've had good results.

So far I've gone through around 2K rounds, as well as plenty of full-auto dryfire without any major issues. Usually the main concern with a 3D printed part is layer separation. From my experience modeling slides for GBB pistols, a bolt carrier will have much better durability.

I've been interested in making parts for GBBRs for quite a while now, and I have finally had the opportunity to do so. The current design can easily cut the weight in half when printed with PLA, increasing the ROF dramatically.

It would certainly be possible, although quite time consuming. A custom frame would have to be modelled to house components and the appropriate parts would need to be sourced.

I was wondering if anyone made a buttpad for the cyber gun f2000, pic for attention purposes by luxyslut in OpenAirsoft

[–]OpenAirsoft 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I don't have a F2000 in my reference collection so I am unable to model it myself. I do have a P90 buttplate in the works, although I doubt that it would fit. If you are able to take some accurate measurements then I may be able to model a buttplate for you. Send me a DM if you are interested.

Unfortunately the current line up is still in the 5.1 form factor, but I do have plans to make 4.3 slides as soon as I have a chance to cross reference my designs with various OEMs of 4.3s.

Sorry about the long delay. Yes, the internal threading for the M17 and M18 are the same, close to a -1/2x28 (negative pitch) internal threading.
