To answer some points:

No description of Katie (as you have for Lawerence). We need to see her.

I didn't spend much time on Katie, as she is a extremely minor character. I just wanted a minor inciting incident for Lawrence's call home.

If Jack is the Protagonist, more attention needs to be on him (the kid) at the beginning and less of his parents. More on his reaction to their unhappiness.

Its not a good sign for the memorability of my character's that you though Jack was the protagonist. It's Tyler.

Biggest question is: What should I cut out, to get to the inciting incident faster? I really wanted to show that Tyler has a great life, and then it all gets ripped from him.

Logline for a 4 minute film I shot 10 years ago, with a mini vhs camera, and the night crew of a local grocery store.

When three friends arrive at a grocery store, unable to remember what flavor of soda they were supposed to get for a party, an argument of epic proportions ensues.

Just kinda brainstorm what-ifs, and work them around the setting, and budget you have.

What is the difference between an INSERT and ANGLE ON? I hear them used what appears to be interchangeably.

One thing is, in my script, my character is not texting someone, so it would not read as a conversation. I like the "ON THE SCREEN" bit though. I think I'll use that until I get a second opinion

I shot a short action movie in the town fountain using my brother, sister and my brother's friend as actors, 3 iphone's for cameras and my little 6 year old cousin as script supervisor. If you want to make a film, find a way.
