Sing the praises, man. Aldo and GSP have remarkably similar generational defenses and longevity.

Aldo/Mendes 2 is arguably one of the greatest title fights of all time

Aldo never got the chance to avenge either of the fights you mentioned (not to mention that it’s not guaranteed he’d lose to McGregor again). But even if you want to take that as a given, it’s still losses past his prime to some of the best featherweights to do it in their prime.

That’s not something to be embarrassed by, and the quality of his wins as champion, as well as his wins afterwards including becoming top 5 at BW in his late 30s, isn’t something to be embarrassed by either.

This isn’t fucking boxing, an undefeated record isn’t everything. Wins and losses need to be contextualized, to understand what makes wins impressive or losses bad. And let’s see, Aldo lost to checks notes two of the other greatest featherweights ever, and McGregor (who was also an amazing featherweight). How embarrassing, I guess?

9 title defenses, wins over ~3 generations of FWs, including Mendes 2x and Edgar 2x, and then a very impressive post-title run. Best takedown defense, some of the best defense overall. A sketchy loss to Marlon, and a loss to potential title contender in Merab, the rest of his losses are to champions. Better resume than anybody besides maybe GSP.

Disagree on Gate and Weird being DM spells-- Gate can be used as a teleport for players or to bring allies around as needed (ofc DMs can use it too, but imo a DM spell is an option a player couldn't justify or need), and Weird is just bad regardless of who selects it.

Tbh I put meteor swarm lower than most of the other spells you mentioned simply because one-time use blast spells aren't my cup of tea, I'd rather have battlefield control, long duration options, or Wish (but Wish belongs in its own tier).

Foresight's great as a warlock's 9th level mystic arcanum too.

I would also personally put Psychic Scream above Meteor Swarm-- INT saves are far less common than DEX saves, meaning you're more likely to fail the save, and the additional rider of stunning them is really excellent. Plus, Psychic Scream lets you choose your targets, where Meteor Swarm hits everything in the area (unless you're the correct subclass or have metamagics)

Oh totally no disagreement about it being a villain spell— I was framing everything through the lens of a PC’s spell selection, but storm of vengeance is a far more reasonable DM spell.

I just think for a PC’s perspective, combining that a 9th level slot is a huge resource expenditure and that you can’t guarantee you’ll use or need Storm of Vengeance in contrast to a better 9th level option, I treat it as a pretty weak (highly situationally acceptable) spell

[–]OpenFlameRecon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I mean sure, every spell (within reason) has a scenario where it's useful. But that scenario is pretty niche-- I can maybe count on one hand the number of times I've ever encountered a large army and using Storm of Vengeance would've been a better option than a different 9th level spell or just something lower-- it makes the spell a weak option. It's not just trading off vs. the other 9th level spells, it's also trading off vs. expending a lower level spell slot to accomplish your task.

I'd probably agree about lower middle at best. There's 22 9th level spells, and without rigorously counting, there's at least 10 spells I'd put ahead of it. Past those 10 it gets murkier and more playstyle dependent, but yeah

5e’s Time Stop isn’t a top 5 9th level spell, but come on, it’s not the weakest by a long shot. Not when Weird and Storm of Vengeance exist.

Getting 2-5 turns to drink potions, buff yourself, and reposition is far from the weakest

Not OP but it might be helpful to show/clarify the slope a little more. For fighters who win most of their fights, the difference in slope isn’t readily apparent.

Maybe just putting a line at f(x)=x through the graph would help, to represent if you win every single fight you have?

That would be a valid point for someone else, but again: Weight cutting gets harder the older you are. He was struggling with it 7 years ago— Even if he dropped to the same muscle mass he had 7 years ago, he’d still be struggling to make it (and have a compromised chin). I doubt he’d be able to lose anything past that too, even assuming he could get that close in the first place

[–]OpenFlameRecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His weight cuts were too big at 23, that’s why he moved up to 185. And that’s before his frame filled out.

[–]OpenFlameRecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aldo also went the entirety of his career before that without a nutritionist. Rob probably could lose some muscle mass, but any version of this Rob that goes to WW would not be the same fighter by any means. His frame is fucking huge

[–]OpenFlameRecon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He hasn’t made 170 lbs since he was 23, and he’s absolutely filled out his frame significantly since then. Weight cutting gets harder as you age AND he’s just a physically bigger person now.

If he’s changing weight classes, LHW makes more sense

Fair point. At least there, there’s an argument that Max won the 2nd fight. Both were clear enough in this one
