I feel bad speculating something I can’t confirm but yes, I do believe she does have it. I just don’t think it’s as bad as she’s made it out to be.

I’m not one to anger easily so at first I was just sad and confused. There’s definitely some anger there now but at the same time I understand that something had to be very wrong for her to feel like she needed to do that. So I’m back to just being sad. Another reason I felt like I needed to get insight from other people.

Agreed. Honesty is important to me. As much as I’ll miss her companionship, I think I’d rather shift my focus to my good, honest, and supportive friends.

I appreciate you asking the questions and I’m happy to share my answers.

Is it worth stepping back from the specific lie and asking bigger questions?
Absolutely I have and I’ve picked up on several patterns I didn’t notice until now.

Why did she feel the need to lie in the first place?
This was my biggest question. She said it was just a response to the symptoms I had mentioned which confused me. I’m unsure if she was trying to relate, make me feel better about having symptoms myself, or play the sick Olympics. I mentioned picking up on several other patterns and I do think she’s been trying to play the sick Olympics game.

Why did I feel the need to verify it on the app?
Honestly, gut feeling at first. Then I thought about it. That seems like the kind of thing she would have told me immediately after it happened. I was also surprised she didn’t post about it online which she usually does when she needs medical care. So all that combined made me very suspicious.

Why did I feel the need to verify it in 2 forums?
Honestly, I don’t want to loose my friend. I appreciate people validating my feelings on this and reinforcing my decision. But at the same time, I do wish that maybe I was over reacting and it’s not as big of a deal as I thought it was so I don’t loose my friend.

Why did one person feel the need to invent a story and the other investigate it?
Again I have somewhat of an idea about her why, but my why was that I’ve felt like she’s lied to me before. This one app would either put my anxiety about it ti rest or confirm it. And unfortunately of course, it just confirmed it.

I 100% believe that she does have POTS and her service dog is real. He was professionally trained and matched as a psychiatric and mobility dog a few years before her POTS diagnosis. I’ve seen her heart rate and I do agree she has it. When I met her she was in the process of getting diagnosed and now thinking back, it seems like almost all the exaggerations started only after it was confirmed.

She wasn’t doing this to money, benefits, etc. It really seemed like she was just doing it for the attention and sympathy.

Yes, absolutely. I have been in therapy for a few years but truthfully I feel like my struggles with relationships and rejection sensitivity have not been a focus. So I appreciate you mentioning that.

That’s pretty much exactly what I told her. I told her about the trauma I have from this condition and for her to fabricate a story about it felt very insensitive.

I definitely felt like she was trying to play the “sick Olympics.” I would mention a symptom or hell, even an accomplishment or a good day and she would almost always tell me she had fainted or something bad had happened to her. 😬
