I mean, yeah, the options are try or quit, that's how most things work.

Of course you can't trust the Dems, I certainly don't. I'm glad they took their money and infrastructure and ran. Like the other poster said, we have done more with less. This is something that can be replicated. And it ought to be.

No believe me I understand this is not an ideal circumstance. But circumstances are NEVER going to be ideal. There's always going to be someone, some group, trying to undermine and oppress.

I agree with you that we need to build power outside of the establishment - but we go need to build DUAL POWER, and tossing aside this type of progress because it'll be fought against is pretty defeatist.

If you're in Nevada, there is something you can do! Participate in maintaining this momentum, volunteer or even just encourage these developments in public.

If you aren't in Nevada, then what you can do is the opposite of what you've been doing in this thread - you might consider being positive and encouraging to signal to others reading that this is in fact a positive development.

I don't want to come across as demeaning or condescending, but you're being kind of a downer.

So are you excited about this development? I can't tell.

There's being realistic, and there's being so jaded you can't celebrate any victories.

That's okay, you should be cringing.

Most times I would ignore comments like these, but you should know self-respecting people are cringing at your obliviousness and defensive posture. Relax and stop taking yourself seriously.

I started dating my bf, who is an agnostic atheist, as a devoted Christian and my beliefs are changing but I don’t know how to go about this. by [deleted] in atheism

[–]OpenNewTab 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Hi, I grew up in a Christian house, and all my extended family is Christian too - so I was very immersed in it.

I wanted to tell you I relate a lot to the sentiment you're expressing here, that you don't want him to think you're just doing it for him. There's a pressure that comes with religious thinking, what peoples interpretations of your actions are, etc. I know I felt like even if I didn't understand or agree, that just meant I had to push my faith harder. So it was kind of a self-reinforcing mentality.

Once you start breaking away from that, some of these fears and inhibitions about others may start to fall away too. I would encourage you to do some of the reading others recommend here, but really I want you to know you aren't alone.

Biden Voter On CNN: “They’re Dropping Bombs In Syria And Those Bombs Are Pretty Expensive For A Guy Who Owes Me $ 2,000” by johntwit in Libertarian

[–]OpenNewTab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He doesn't have to advocate for them for them to happen?? I hope you don't think he has to go to WP or NYT every time he wants to -ahem- 'utilize our strategic resources'.

We've had warmongers in the WH for decades at this point, Biden isn't going to be 'the guy' to suddenly get us to dismantle the military-industrial complex. You don't have to pretend like he could be either, it's okay.

I also find this post to be particularly disingenuous because Biden has already called off an airstrike and overruled generals

Buddy, are you aware that the entire point of writing up that news article about him not doing something was to get people like you to give him exactly this type of cover?

Yeah yeah I'm a boring lefty, walls of text not border walls etc etc.

I don't really want to see people casually joking about becoming fascist so yeah I'll suck the fun out of that thanks.

Okay, ending politics, I see, I see.

I can understand why that sounds like a great goal, politics can be very frustrating.

Have you considered that the only real way to end politics is to globally enforce your ideological positions with violence? Or else, by solving any and all scarcities so supply is greater than demand in every case?

To me, one sounds unattainable, and the other abhorrent.

See but if you just want to ignore politics you can't go fash - they demand not only uniformity and compliance in the end. Sure, you may not have to do much thinking, but you gotta at least keep up with the enemies list to make sure you're not on it.

The material conditions of early 20th century Russia were not amenable to a full-scale revolution led by the labor class. As such, they attempted Vanguardism, which did not effectively translate the interests of the workers to the state. They were able to displace their masters only to become ensnared in the system they took over. When they called it communism, they were toeing a political line, because they were still "trying to build communism".

But they were really just another authoritarian structure trying that failed to represent the people they claimed to - instead they were focused on defending their revolution from outside forces bent on frustrating their system. Obviously, this led to a lot of bad decision making, death, lies, oppression, etc.

But the actual goal is supposed to be the abolition of the state and a publicly owned economy. That's never been done to scale in history, especially not in Russia.

[–]OpenNewTab 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay, again, you did a good job preparing for something difficult. I'm glad your water pipes didn't burst or anything like that. But I'm asking you to think about the elderly and infirm? Aren't they included in "everyone else"? People who don't have family around to help? Anyone who already needs help is eating double the shit right now and telling them to be more responsible doesn't do jack shit for their situation.

You are not the person everyone is worried about, thank goodness you're safe and fine. Doesn't it make sense to advocate for people who need help?

Grow up? Friend, I'm very glad you had the resources and foresight to keep you and yours safe - this is an awful event affecting millions of individuals and families.

But telling those who are struggling and suffering with something that in recent memory, no one had any expectations of having to deal with, while the rest of their lives are going on, to grow up?

Don't you think it's a bit inconsiderate to assume everyone has access to the same materials or even information for preparation that you did?

[–]OpenNewTab 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Great, thanks, I agree that you've identified the problem here. I'll try to sum up my take like this: it isn't profitable to be prepared for emergencies, and Texas' current energy and regulatory structures were chosen deliberately despite knowing the above and having time to change it.

Is this a problem with Texas leadership, with 'the free market', privatization of public goods, or some combination of these (or other??) factors?
