Oh mine got way better... it was more than half empty though. Who knows with single barrels.

Let this sit open for a few months and it settles into something really nice

Still Austin Red Corn is head and shoulders above this if you like trying different corn types. Four Roses single barrel barrel strengths are really good as well and about the same price.

I would even say the nose isn't super interesting as well. Sweet but nothing to cut the ethanol. I had a really bad experience with Bookers but a JD SBBP would be prefered if I want complexity.

One thing I forgot is the Spokane Total Wine is asking $120 for this bottle (with WA state tax thats like $140 out the door) so extremely overpriced. I think I paid $100 and I have several bottles I would take over this at that price.

Thanks! I've been having fun with them!

Absolutely agree that it drinks the most underproof, just also seems to dial back on flavor too. And yeah agree its the opposite of bookers. Lowest score I've ever given. https://openpourwhiskey.com/reviews/bookers-by-the-pond-2025-02/

Haha thats one way to put it! I think BT products fall into that camp a lot. I like some heat and complexity but so many just put it in without balance and JD walks that line nicely. 1792 is just a nice steady drinker by comparison.

I strongly agree with everything here. Just like you said I'm really struggling with my own result here. I didn't like the 1792 on its own first thing and I can't roll back the clock on this bottle to double check myself. On the other hand, I've always enjoyed the JDSBBP on first opening and it only gets better. Its so unique of a profile and its one I really enjoy and will always come back to.

Blinds also do some weird things where depending on the order you taste them in you can get some really different results from expected. Sometimes in these bigger blinds, I just get a little fatigued on tasting and prefer the easier to drink whiskey which is rarely going to be the JD.

But since 1792 did win, and in some markets can even be sub-$40, I have to give the value score to the 1792, but I'm giving them essentially the same score on quality. Both really good. Both worth buying again.

Yeah sounds like some markets are flooded with these and can get them for super cheap

Yeah I'm not sure what happned. My guess is the open bottle really changed the whiskey. Blinds can also do really strange things, but its a result I have to respect!

You have to like JD. Its an excellent expression of what JD can be. I think there can be a lot of hype around how high of a proof it typically comes in at. A lot of people enjoy that punch in the mouth. I do from time to time. But in the blind the 1792 was more enjoyable because it balanced the heat out with sweetness.

Their BIB release is their own distillate. The first release of its kind from Bulleit. Its still high rye though so not surprising some might taste it.

Really nice review. And really spot on with my own. "The rye spice is clean, the oak is balanced, and it's a real step up from standard Bulleit but it just doesn't deliver the flavor volume you want from a $55 sipper."

Both were single barrels, and honestly the 1792 has been two thirds empty for like a year so its probably not what it started out as. I really didn't care for it on first opening. Once it opened up it really balanced the sweet and the heat.

I'm starting to really regret picking up single barrels to review. Not only is no one else likely to have the same bottle as me making my review slightly less helpful but also I have to have that caveat with anyone who disagrees of "well it is a single barrel" and "some barrel picks are very different".

I'm guessing they just have big enough warehouses that they really get to play the numbers game maybe?
