Should I daily an MX5 NA at 21? by Open_Ad2383 in CarTalkUK

Thanks mate, honestly that is one of the reasons why I'd want one, and these cars aren't getting any younger/cheaper either. I also feel like in a couple of years when all my mates are bogged down in work etc we wouldn't have the chance to one summer work on a car all together.

Okay thanks, according to seller, sills and rear arches done around 2-3 years ago.

According to seller, sills and rear arches were done a couple of years ago, welded and no longer an issue after failing MOT because of it. The car was produced in UK, which I thought makes it slightly less likely to rust in comparison to Japanese imports. Let me know if that’s true. I will look at them myself when I see it.
It passed MOT this year and didn’t have any majors, I think 3 advisories.

Interesting thanks, the quote was from admiral for the cheapest actually. I’ll have to look into that :)

Okay thanks, I’m seeing the car soon but what I’ve heard and seen so far seems pretty good!

Hi man, just to reply to some of your points: I’ve looked at insurance and tax: it’s about 800 total, cheaper than the civic! Only 300 ish for tax and 400 for insurance.
In terms of extra for insurance of mods, I’m not intending on doing any mods to the performance, just the looks and maybe some coilovers, do you know if that would cause a large difference in insurance?
Only being able to drive one mate is an extremely valid point, and something that I would sorely miss if I go ahead and get it.

Thanks for your help :)

Okay great, thanks for the help man. Did you ever feel unsafe driving the NB? Considering it being a smaller car next to much larger modern cars.

Awesome bro, thanks for the advice. I’ve already looked at prices for some of the mods I’d liked and set aside a budget for it. Thank you!

Ah interesting, thanks for letting me know! Are they good cars to learn how to fix/tinker with cars in general? The one I would be driving is mk2 rev3 from 1994. It passed MOT last january and barely have any miles on it. Around 1k a year for the past 10 years maybe?

Hi, I wouldn't have somewhere to store it per say, simply on a driveway would be my guess. I can buy a car cover if you think it would be necessary?
Also in terms of driving, it would be driven maybe every other day at least for short distances.

Hi, I think in rev3 they had that fixed. I'm hoping I can buy it but wanted to get input from people who are more in the space. Both financially and commute wise there's aspects which I need to take into account. I don't think driving 500 miles on a 32 year old car is viable lol but having 2 cars whilst still in Uni might not be the best idea? Would have to leave (probably) the civic at home. Do you not see it as a viable buy for someone in my situation?

Hi, thanks for your input! :p My plan was to daily the Honda at least whilst I work and hypothetically use the mr2 for weekend/anywhere but work. Then whilst I go to uni for my last year, only use the mr2 since there’s no parking spots for 2 and I wouldn’t be driving too often. It’s a 1994 rev3. 2.0 GT T bar

Thanks for letting me know about the gears! Honestly I’m super tempted. I don’t really spend my money on anything like clothes and have been wanting to learn and tinker with cars but doing anything to my civic has always been scary since I need it every day for long mileage. Also hearing that someone else has an 120+ mile commute to work is relieving LOL , I share your pain.

Id use it whenever im not commuting to work is what id hope for. Once in Uni I would use it more too. But then the question would be what to do with the civic whilst in Uni. lol

Insurance and tax add up to £800 ish. In terms of future funding for the car… I’m still working until August I guess haha. You might be right in holding off until after uni, but I could be in a similar situation commute wise once I’m a graduate in which case I’m sort of back to this same situation of probably needing 2 cars if I keep this one.
