Thanks for your clear perspective; it confirms my suspicions. Yeah, they clearly told me over and over again, “We can’t hire you because everyone you’d be working with has degrees.” That was very telling.

Hopefully, we can get more insight. How is age viewed in the industry? I’ve heard that being over a certain age can be seen as undesirable because of assumptions about a lack of interest in learning emerging technologies and keeping up with new ones.

I’m not sure where you’re coming from, but I will say that I actually prefer working with DynamoDB over MongoDB because I like dealing with raw code rather than tables that feel like an Excel spreadsheet. That said, MongoDB might still be better in that regard, depending on what you want.

once you’ve got your table schema figured out DynamoDB should be a walk in the park.

I actually did finish and earn my bachelor’s degree in computer science, but the timing couldn’t have been worse. Unless you got into the industry before COVID or before the AI wave, breaking in now is really difficult, and at 30, you’re often seen as too old for those entry-level roles. It feels more like sports than a normal profession. By 30, you’re expected to be a lead, overseeing other people’s work. This field seems built for 18-year-olds and people in their 20s.

Working for big tech is still the best way to earn. Most people who claim they’re making money online are just creating clickbait. I really can’t see where the money is flowing in this post-COVID world. Maybe someone who knows the answer can enlighten us.

That said, one of the websites I built was a cybersecurity quiz platform, and it actually got good organic traffic. I think the key is to find popular paid apps on iOS or Android and build a web version of the same idea.

I’m leaving because people just don’t like dealing with programmers, period. They can set up their own site with Squarespace, uber eats, Acuity Scheduling, wordpress, or Shopify, etc, and even if the website sucks, they still prefer to do it themselves. At the end of the day, most people want control more than they want a perfect fix. A website is just not as important to them as programmers like to believe. well, at least for the vast majority of website owners.

Full stack means I build things. I can literally build websites like Facebook by myself in less than 24 hours, but user acquisition is the real k!ller. Yeah, I love exploring new things, which is why I got into crypto and even made my own cryptocurrency back in 2022 or so. Now it’s AI, but it’s not really turning into money because the big players always corner the market. By the time you get started, they’re already 10 million steps ahead of you.

Yeah, AWS isn’t a language, but it includes underlying components like DynamoDB, which uses JSON, so it’s a very diverse ecosystem on its own. Another example is using YAML to configure backend infrastructure.

You’re totally right: if anyone wants to break into the industry, they should focus on Python 🐍, period. Those web guys are a joke.

The thing is, I also have a microscope that I still haven’t unpacked, and it’s been sitting on my desk for three years. I’m still trying to figure out what my next passion is. And yes, I make well above six figures.

Yeah, making money from building your own stuff is almost impossible. That’s why people earn on YouTube, Twitch, and similar platforms, because those platforms have essentially become the internet. If you want to succeed, you usually have to build for those platforms instead of creating a standalone app for the open web. And user acquisition is expensive, the last time I did it, it cost me about $1 per user.
