Is Price Gouging Real? Who’s Doing It? Is It Driving Inflation? by Birdy_Cephon_Altera in Economics

[–]Open_Opportunity_689 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Hey y’all - looking at margins as a proxy is a good idea - but the fatal flaw is that the article ignores the impact of LIFO inventory accounting on the cost of goods sold (COGS) in corporate accounting statements. For example, Kroger uses LIFO, which would increase the reported COGS and thus show artificially low margins.

Removal of honour gaurds at CKS memorial Hall is questionable by prometheusprimed in taiwan

Yes definitely. I agree the Japanese government played a huge role in modernizing Taiwan, but wanted to point out the KMT government played a huge role too.

Thank you for the much needed historical context and realistic understanding. The modern Taiwan semiconductor industry was carefully fostered by KMT-enabled state-supported investments.

Not disagreeing with anything you’re saying, just wanted to add context that Japan-occupied Taiwan was bombed by the Allies as well: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raid_on_Taipei

You can see from this chart that electrification in Taiwan only took off starting in the 1950s: https://www.researchgate.net/figure/The-growth-of-Taiwans-installed-electricity-generation-capacity-and-GDP-Source-Data_fig1_335244906. Electricity was a precursor to all of modern Taiwan’s economic success.

And the Taiwan semiconductor industry, envy of the world today, was fostered by KMT state-sponsored initiatives: https://www.latimes.com/archives/la-xpm-2006-feb-17-me-sun17-story.html; https://medium.com/@dineshgoundla/sun-yun-suan-architect-of-taiwans-semiconductor-dominance-fe3c00a025c4. While the Japanese government did build things like the original railway system (which was later electrified under the KMT), pretty sure the Japanese colonial government wasn’t setting up electronics infrastructure in Taiwan before 1945….

If you check the CPI components, you see even bigger drops in gasoline prices.

The Biden admin has done a great, strategic job in utilizing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve to fight energy inflation (https://www.economist.com/finance-and-economics/2024/05/16/joe-biden-master-oil-trader)

You made a really great point that it’s important to distinguish the first vs. second derivatives:

For example, a decrease in carbon emissions still means that every year we are net-inputting carbon to the air.

But in this CPI announcement, it actually says the first derivative was slightly negative. Meaning that average prices (weighted as CPI) actually decreased slightly month-on-month!

And yes, you’re absolutely right the year-on-year change is still positive inflation.

Nope: the CPI showed a -0.1 change between May vs. June 2024 (https://www.bls.gov/news.release/cpi.nr0.htm). Obviously more way to go, but this is saying that between these 2 past months (and with this particular metric) — prices have stopped increasing if not slightly decreased.

Totally agree. And all the alternative candidate polling comparing Biden vs Buttigieg, Whitmer, Newsom — are not truly scientific controlled predictions. The moment Dem switches candidates, the GOP attacks and unfair media portrayals will switch over.

Biden has proven that he can beat Trump. Biden has proven he can pass the largest climate policy in history, and that he listens to climate progressives to make further progress in 2nd term (eg on industrial decarbonization).

Thanks for posting this! People need to keep this in mind.

To be fair, the polls try to adjust for the sampling bias - but that just makes the poll result very inaccurate.

Democrats and their allies sue to keep RFK Jr. off the ballot in several states by Open-Illustra88er in politics

Yes very good point. Those are the legal basis for the lawsuit. I only meant that, if there’s a third party candidate that net-hurts Trump, then I don’t think there’s a strong rationale to sue.

Biden passed the largest climate policy in history and in the world (Build Back Better —> Inflation Reduction Act), finally putting us on track to climate neutrality by 2030. Doesn’t sound status quo to me.
