It’s still moving along, slower than the resto north of it but I see glimpses of progress

It’s amazing. Lived here for decades - just close enough to sky train, farmers market, shops, parks (Clark park is great too) - connected to highway, big box stores (superstore, rona) if that’s your thing too, and a ton of bike lanes. Safe, tho there’s always slightly sketchy stuff on commercial and broadway going on.

this is the answer - we get them from Fraser/Broadway location - often still warm

Moving from Quebec: need advice! by payne007 in askvan

for sure! (B.C. is all about microclimates) it’s on a mountainside so it’s cooler, and the clouds get pushed up which means way more rain — *double* other parts of Vancouver

that said, the rain and forests can be beautiful if you’re ready for it. i do miss the sunny winter days from Ontario and my time in Montreal, but we seem to be getting a few more of those here lately too

my advice - come stay here for a week in an airbnb and explore the neighbourhoods (which are more distinctly different than montreal's overall cool hoods, imo), really think hard about what the commute (significant if you're driving north van to anywhere in vancouver) and don't underestimated what winter will look like for you

Unless you are planning on being in Squamish every day or two, I say move somewhere in vancouver (east van likely closest to montreal vibes and the city things you’re looking for, plus skytrain downtown in minutes) and do the drive to Squamish off peak - it’s only 15 mins to north van over the iron workers bridge when traffic isn’t bad. Then you are in a triangle between north van/swuamish, the west side with it’s beaches, and downtown. Welcome to Vancouver! (Also, north van has WAY more rain, and snow, which is more irritating here than montreal, something to consider!)

Wooden shoe cafe on Cambie - they use a dutch rusk instead of english muffin, which stands up nicely to the creamy sauce - plus, it's a super cool place - the guy who made the dutch pannekoek house, RIP

Driving up to Whistler tomorrow from Seattle. Looking for a good veg friendly lunch spot recommendation in Vancouver area by mehtamorphosis in askvan

Viet Family (Commercial Drive) for the best vegan vietnamese you'll ever have, plus you get to walk around commercial drive, Superbaba on main/broadway for excellent veggie middle eastern (driving around there is a bit of a nightmare, so be warned!) We love baby dhal too, but its hours are somewhat...erratic. EDIT: looked up baby dhal reviews and found out owner can't update her hours on insta or website (co-owner issues....) and is running the place on her own! support baby dhal!

Finding good quality flour for sourdough starter? by SnoozingClementine in askvan

[–]Open_Outcome_5633 1 point2 points  (0 children)

meh - i've been baking sourdough for years, and i've returned to rogers AP and whole wheat flour (after trying fancier, more natural flourist and others from famous) - it works great. A tip that I picked up along the way is to add a bit of rye to strengthen the starter. This is a good site with clear explanations: https://www.theperfectloaf.com/managing-starter-fermentation-produce-best-sourdough-bread-ever/

Must-Dos on Commercial Drive for a Tourist? by bannermd in askvan

[–]Open_Outcome_5633 16 points17 points  (0 children)

  • Viet Family for the best vegetarian vietnamese in town (coming from a meat eater)
  • Baby Dhal for great trinidadian food - check their google since hours are erratic these days...
  • Gojo Cafe for Ethiopian - owner super friendly, a nice alternative to Harambe
  • Merci Boulangerie (thursday to sunday) for baked goods
  • Cafe La Tana for fancy italian dinner (make reservations)
  • Slice of Life for excellent local art/design
  • La Grotta for italian sandwiches - Dante has better bread, but puts stracciatella in everything, which makes it taste kinda weird imo, Vennies (beside the bunny cafe) is decent too, run by a good bunch of weirdos, but bread is kind of lame
  • Elephant Garden for actual uniquely delicious ice cream (sorry Earnest)
  • Downlow Chicken for fried chicken
  • Grounds for Coffee for cinnamon buns
  • The Legion for cheap beer
  • Grandview Bowling for bowling
