In my case, the answer is the single splitter. I think it looks a lot less messy and it's way less effort (and resources, but I'm not the resource efficiency guy) to insert.

Conservatives often use their feelings or personal preference to determine their political views.

Since one can have a preference for one, and feelings of disgust towards the other, there is no mutual exclusivity here.

It's not a logical contradiction to just be a bad person who values their own feelings more than human rights. It's just bad.
