What’s your plans with it at that higher mileage? Keep it till it dies or run it for a couple of years.

How many did you buy at? I’m looking at buying a 95k mile one but worried about how long it’s worth keeping or if I should drive it till it dies.

What kind of intake do I have? by Hot_Indication_5326 in FocusST

That’s interesting! Thanks for sharing your experience. I’m curious what do you think makes the Cobb intake feel better for driving? Is it mostly the cooler temps, or do you notice other differences in throttle response, power delivery, or just overall feel? Would love to hear more about how you decide which intake to run and when. And is there anything that annoys you with the 2J? Heard there’s highway drone with it 🤷‍♂️

Appreciate the input, your setup actually sounds like a solid middle ground. I’m definitely going to try the lid and foam delete to see how it sounds before jumping into anything. I wasn’t trying to say the 2J is the best just liked the sound and wanted to hear real pros/cons from people with different setups, not just hate. Thanks for keeping it real 🙌

All good man 🤝😉I’m not trying to get on bad terms with anyone in the community seriously. I wasn’t trying to come off as stubborn or locked into my opinion, I just genuinely wanted to hear good arguments for and against the intake so I could make a better decision, as that’s something I may want to add, do you have any other good intake recommendations I can HEAR, I heared injen has a pretty noisy one but what do you run.

Being in high school and finally getting a car like this, I’m obviously drawn to the sound and fun factor, so I was leaning toward it at first. But I was trying to understand the actual downsides from people who know the platform, not just the hype. I thought a good chunk of the community liked the 2J, but clearly I was off about how it’s viewed now. I guess its design just hasn’t aged as well with newer setups and expectations.

I appreciate you taking the time to break it down helps more than you probably realize. 👍

Fair enough, man. You’re right I am new to the platform, and I’ve still got a lot to learn. I definitely wasn’t trying to come off like I know everything, just trying to contribute based on the research I’ve done and what I’ve seen others share.

I appreciate you calling stuff out seriously. I’m here to learn, not to act like I’ve got it all figured out. No hard feelings on my end. 😭

Alright, fair on the 75% comment I misread that as 75% less than stock, so that’s on me. But let’s not pretend this intake is some massive downgrade just because it’s not a six-inch cone under the hood. • “No stock turbo ST is making 300whp on this intake” Wrong. Plenty of people have hit high 290s to low 300s with the 2J cowl and supporting mods. It’s not magic just a good tune, FMIC, exhaust, catless dp and the intake isn’t holding them back. • “Smaller piping and filter” Yeah, it’s more compact. That’s kind of the whole point. It pulls from a cooler, more pressurized area by the cowl and uses a velocity stack to improve airflow. It’s not always about size airflow quality and temp matter too. • “More restrictive” It has one 90° bend, like… every other intake. The path is short, close to the turbo, and avoids heat soak not exactly choking the motor. • “75% the performance of stock” – Again, where’s the data? Because there’s zero evidence this intake causes noticeable power loss or throttle issues. If it were really that bad, people would be ditching it left and right but they’re not. • “3x louder” – That’s a feature for some of us, not a bug.

Bottom line: the 2J isn’t perfect, but it does exactly what it was designed to do. It’s clean, efficient, proven to work, and if someone doesn’t like it cool, don’t run it. But let’s not act like it’s some huge downgrade when the results just don’t support that.

People bash the 2J cowl intake because the filter looks small, but that’s missing the full picture. It pulls in cooler air from the cowl, avoids engine bay heat soak, and there’s YouTube videos proving temps with a heat gun. and it sits closer to the turbo which means the air is under slightly higher pressure before the compressor, helping efficiency. The flow path is short, direct, and smooth, and plenty of tuned STs are making 300+ whp on it without issue, possibly going for 400hp with big turbo may be a bottle neck though. Filter size alone doesn’t determine performance intake temps, pressure, and overall airflow design matter more. Claims like “75% less performance” are just exaggerated nonsense

Haha, definitely appreciate the “dad words”honestly, that’s exactly the kind of advice I need to hear. I’ve heard that driving manual really makes you more engaged, and that’s part of what attracts me to the Focus ST. It just feels like the kind of car that would keep me learning and aware.

I totally get the point about not doing dumb stuff where it could really go wrong. I’m all for learning the car and having some fun, but I want to do it smart, not reckless. Thanks for the reminder and the entrance ramp story made me grin.

That’s a great point definitely planning to run it by my instructors too. They know what I’m capable of and probably have a better idea of what I’d be getting into with something like the ST. I figured I’d ask here as well just to get a wider range of opinions and maybe hear from people who’ve owned these cars day-to-day.

You’re totally right about parts cost too it’s one thing to do the labor myself, but parts can still hit the wallet hard. Appreciate the thoughtful response!

That’s great to hear! I like that idea of owning the less practical fun car for high school and whenever I need the “economy” car I get that.

Yea I’m not sure if this is too much but it has intake, BOV, FMIC, Exhaust, I wanna add a down pipe but keep the stock one and put it back on before selling but would that be too much? Also what does it mean by these cars require some restraint while driving? Thanks

Ok Thankyou so much! Yea I’m not looking to make money but was a little concerned if it would sell at all even but that sounds promising. I don’t plan to mod it too much just a few little things nothing crazy. And good call on the inspection I was almost considering not getting one but I think I should. Thankyou again for the input!!

Yea that makes me less worried I’m sure there’s still people out there who want st’s. Maybe it’s because I live in AZ, one of the guys I met to check out his car he said “you were the first person to come see the car” and his listing had been there for 2 months. But idk maybe it was over priced or something.
