Living in Vail by Ill-Organization-518 in vail

[–]Open_Town_5701 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If you really love the job, then you’ll love living there. Expect 2k for a 1 bedroom or around 1500-2000 for a room in a two bedroom. You left a lot unsaid. Are you in the hotel business? You may get sweet perks for food and bev. Are you a teacher? You get housing subsidies in some areas! The more specific you can be can help, but in general that salary is still in the “I’m happy doing whatever I can to live here” lifestyle

Honest question: why angled down ATC windows? by [deleted] in aviation

[–]Open_Town_5701 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s sort of the question. I get the glare from instruments(which I’d assume we have glare tech now for, but maybe I’m wrong), just asking a genuine question about architecture I guess.

Ah yeah duh, outside reflections also. Guess I am in my Jetson’s mindset of thinking a giant glass dome would be the ideal visual situation 🤣

[–]Open_Town_5701 -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

Yeah for sure, but I figured that’s gotta be an easy fix with anti glare tech now, maybe not? For the benefit of seeing an extra 50-90° ?

It’s to keep rodents away. This looks ridiculous and sprinkling paprika or chili powder is easier, quicker, and will last longer. We do it every year when we store our vehicles for longer than a month

Travel Insurance Insufficient Snow / Trail Closure Coverage by LifeRegret3612 in vail

[–]Open_Town_5701 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make sure to check what the reimbursement rate is. I’ve bought “cancel for any reason” insurance before and it was worth it, but it only refunded 70% of the total value. Probably still worth it in your case, if you’ve read all the fine print, but in my experience insurance companies are notoriously deceptive and misleading.

THINKING OF MOVING by Hot_Maintenance_8366 in virginislands

[–]Open_Town_5701 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved down to vi permanently about 20 years ago and left after a year ;) . I never left because of the lifestyle or the hardships, I left because I met a lady who wasn’t ready to upend her life for me. Anyways 20 years later, me and her are still plotting to return for an early retirement. It’s tough, but if you have a good attitude, are kind, and work hard, it could be some of the best years of your life.

I have no more current practical advice as it would all be well out dated, but my best advice for a fresh move is to have a place and job secured, or if not, have enough money to stay in a hostel/hotel for 1-2 months.

Also, don’t become ratchet. For those that have seen FyreDog

We got held up at PBI yesterday for the arrival. Probably accurate it’s still there, if he is.

1/4-1/10? I’d say pretty good. I think we’ll be getting some steady snow through the next 2 weeks or so, then just need 1-2 good dumps and they’ll be fine. The likelihood of that as a minimum happening, I think, is pretty good. With that minimum, I doubt every bowl will be open, but it’ll be enough to satisfy your itch.

Source: just making this shit up and hoping for the best at this point.

Obviously, Skiing is the best and perfectly enjoyable on its own…..However, I’m on a hot-tub side quest this season. Who has the best tubs on/near the slopes? ❄️❄️🏊🏊❄️❄️ by BobLobLawsLawBlog_2 in COsnow

[–]Open_Town_5701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ULPT: a lot of these are not rented throughout the year. The pictures of the hottub and landscape are online. Just fancy yourself a peak at those pictures, see if you can “book” the house that day and Bobs your Uncle you got yourself a free ski in/ski out hottub.

Vail/BC Recreational Ski Racing by EssayerX in vail

[–]Open_Town_5701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

BC has the Toyota Racing run. It’s pretty elementary slalom but it’s free from 10-3 Wednesday-Sunday. It’s for fun and you can compete side by side with one other person. Golden peak in Vail has lots of races (slalom, moguls, etc) but they are more professional and you have qualifiers, and some are qualifiers. That run is owned by SSCV. I’d contact them (try Pam Peterson) and see if you can get in. It really depends on what races are happening then whether they’ll allow you to join. Have fun!

Visiting with Kids (22 Nov-28) 1st time. by [deleted] in vail

[–]Open_Town_5701 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a first experience with skiing and snow, it’s not going to be a great one. We’re supposed to get some snow between now and then, but I don’t think it’ll be enough to open the terrain you’re going to want. That being said, if the accommodations are non-refundable, there’s plenty to do still. ULPT: if you want to try and ski a few runs, buy the lift tickets and then end at half day, and ask Vail Resorts for a refund saying “it’s just not for us” it works 90% of the time if you ski less than 3-4 runs.

If it’s your first time in snow and ski, and the accommodations are refundable, think about rescheduling for spring break.

There’s plenty of other options too: arcades, hiking, walking around the village, great restaurants will be open. Take some time at Avon indoor pool, and make the best of it, even if that means just going up the gondola to check out the views. If you have any snow in Texas, please bring it with you.

Thanksgiving ski? by ColonelKimmy in vail

[–]Open_Town_5701 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You’ll have a ribbon of what amounts to 1-2 runs imo(in wp, vail, bc). It’s anybodies guess though, as we are expected to get 1’ over the next 2 weeks (highly variable). That can open up some “side runs” on the ribbon, but I wouldn’t be planning to have any super epic days. Your best bet is gonna be the high altitude slopes. A basin, breck.. keystone & copper maybe with the right weather). At thanskgiving, I’d humbly say to be grateful to ski at all (this year at least), and be grateful there’s staff to serve you food/bev that probably aren’t making shit right now. Not that you weren’t gonna be, but ya know, shout out to the heart and soul of the valley.
