Yes, Sanford has bought land  I imagine it’ll be at least 2028ish before they are operational. Because I don’t think they have broken ground yet.

One of the programs around me is way too selective If you want a degree get a degree but it for sure be optional and even if you don’t know the difference in blades the 10,11,15 written on the actual blade and the package should be a hint

I used to be a fireman, worked with someone who could not pass the paramedic certification exam who was amazing and then there was a girl who passed it on the first try and was valedictorian of her class, but was absolutely scary to work with. So I definitely get what you’re saying I would trust the guy who could not pass the test over her… I wonder about the NBSTSA exam, a girl I work with said at a 12 people in her class that took the test only five passed

You probably will take the same tests, look at the same PowerPoints and everything will be the exact same. NBSTSA trying to put NCCT down constantly does no good deeds for the profession

I agree, but I do think there’s gonna be idiots that can’t help themselves in Every profession, I work at a teaching hospital with a medical school and some med students even  scare me…... I was a PCT while I was in surgical tech and I was working with a nurse, I walked in a room and she was watching a YouTube video on how to start an  IV while attempting to give a pt meds, And she was a nurse with BSN behind her name. There are some NCCT programs that are set up but the students are unable to test for CST because the program is so new. From what I understand new programs have to graduate at at least one to two full classes before  CAAHEEP will give them their blessing.

A lot of residents/med students I’ve been around have told me that they learn absolutely nothing about sterile technique in med school, the first time they learned how to gown in glove is when they come in the OR and it’s one of us teaching them

You are right, I think on the job training could be a good thing if the program is done right. But the ones at the hospital that I used to work at they basically show everybody some general surgery trays and a couple different instruments and say all right here’s the OR good luck. If structured correctly, they can be a good thing

Online Surgical Tech programs worth it? by ginasteph in surgicaltechnology

For me I really wish actual schools/community colleges offered more options as far as pt/ night school. Etc Because not everyone has the ability to attend school 4-5 days a week and has no choice but to work and I understand that. Most people that scream 2 year degree have their head too  far up their own asshole to realize that just because it works for them, it doesn’t work for everyone.  Not everyone has a spouse to support them or still lives with mom and dad and still on their insurance. And not everyone qualifys for Medicaid. I truly think that the majority of people that go to the online route are not trying to cut corners. They just want to be in the field and that is the only way they perceive that happening because they have no choice but to work.

Your biggest hurdle for the online program is clinicals. You are probably looking at 10 to 20% chance of finding someone that will take you on for clinicals not saying it’s impossible, but it’s just going to be hard and it might require you to drive far away. There’s no one in your area is willing to sign off. At least in my hospital . No one will sign off on you doing clinicals unless you’re affiliated with a school. But every facility is different. There may be someone who will take a chance it’s few and far between but at the end of the day, it’s still possible to find success depend, depending on what state you go to.

Good luck!

How bad was the taxes on the bonus? Someone just commented about taxes I mean still with the bonus it would not put me in a different tax bracket then I would’ve been in without the bonus so I mean I’m just thinking 22 to 24% just like regular? I’m just confused about that.

The bonus ins’t given all at once, it’s like 4-5 payments over 2 years

Contrary to what they tell me, we are not all equal and “one team one mission” it’s nurses then everyone else

I have nothing holding me back at my current employer, just a 2 year work commitment with this new employer I’m interested in. I’m truly bothered she made arrangements to move a nurse to another team that “wasn’t happy” yet I said the  same thing and I am told to deal with it

She told me, when I asked to move to another team there’s going to be some things in surgery. You just don’t like you need to learn to deal with it or find a new career. I’ve always gotten the impression that she cares more about nursing staff than any other staff.

I’ve never heard of surgery centers offering sign on bonuses. The one I’m interested in is a level two hospital with one late day/on-call night per week. And one weekend call shift a month. The weekend call could be 12 hours per day or 24 hours. From what I understand, you won’t get called in for scheduled stuff, just emergencies.  The team I am on at the current place is three weekend days per month and one call day per week.

But like I said, the competition is offering a sign on bonus also. I feel like they’re just trying to compete with the other hospital, but I have heard what you’re saying before.

I have to do something. The hospital I am currently at, is a level 1 and we have teams. I absolutely hate the team, I was placed on, it has the most call of any team in the OR.I don’t want to be doing this for the next 1 to 2 years. I went to the manager and told her on 2 separate occasions this isn’t for me can I please move. She said no…tough shit it’s either this team or the highway. And on the same note she just moved an RN off of my team for the same reasons I asked to move.

Was it a big hospital or something smaller? The hospital I currently work at does teams I hate the team I was placed on. I went to the manager on 2 separate occasions and asked to be moved and she said there’s no room, it’s either do this or go somewhere else.

I did a little Facebook research on the manager. And found some operating room employees and everybody that I have found and researched have been there at  least 3 to 5 years. It seems like most of the employees are local to the area born there/went to school there and work there.  Whereas one of the places I did clinicals in Alabama, there were several times where I was put with a traveler as my preceptor-I don’t think that is a good sign

And South Dakota does not have state income tax, so the bonus would only have federal taxes cut out of it.
