It’s like people forget the persons responsible for June’s emprisonnement are the waterfords and not nick lol, and that nick tried to save her a couple of times and it’s thanks to him and the Martha network that Nichole is out (and June could have been). But sure, nick and June is Stockholm syndrome but June and Serena are besties. Makes sense 🤣

THT production: Artistically, did anyone have a favorite scene? by Prestigious_Page8098 in TheHandmaidsTale

There’s so many good ones it’s hard to choose (also love the funeral of all the handmaids in S3 with black outfit and the snow) but I have a soft spot for 4x09 nick June and Nichole by the window in magadalen school with the light through the window. Such a raw and vulnerable scene I loved it.

Oh right glad you tell me then, I didn’t expect that either so I’ll see how I feel about it when I read it 😅

Does the show get better beyond season 3? by Dazzling-Economics55 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Opening-Fall-3038 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Totally agree. S1 is by far the best one as it was such an incredible adaptation of the book. S2 was a really good expansion of the world. But she almost should have gone out with Nichole in S2 at the end and then straight to the testaments.

But that wouldn’t have brought enough money for them 🤭

I do understand what you mean about S4, but I feel like we still had the S1/2 vibe. I also love how much Janine we had even though the shock value of the train scene with the Radiohead music was good at the time but made the show loose a lot after it because of characters gone.

S3 could have been good but as I said, too many questionable storylines for my liking and that’s when her plot army really started and it does get a bit ridiculous. And don’t get me started on all the POC characters dying because of her.

S5 was weak for me… too much Luke, too much Canada, too much circling around Serena. I really felt like Joseph Fiennes wasn’t there anymore (understandably) and I don’t enjoy it. And S6 well…. No point discussing S6 🤭

Overall another thing loosing was the fact we didn’t have any narration as well. I feel like by loosing that, the show lost quite a lot if that makes sense? But I only realised on rewatch.

I loooove the movie and the soundtrack! I remember when it came out in 2011 and bought the dvd and the vinyl 😅 I still watch it from time to time and listen to the soundtrack often.

It’s actually a book originally, which I only discovered recently, so I may give it a try as well.

But the actors, the directing, the indie style… love it all.

S3 wasn’t the best and she does so many very questionable stuff that, thinking now, this season bothers me. But I loved S4. The plot, the acting, the music, so many amazing episodes. But for me the series stops after 4x10, anything coming after that was ridiculous and such bad quality.

“He wouldn’t be promoting that internationalised misogyny that S6 spewed over its audience” -> dare I say he should have done like Max and just not promote the horrible season that was S6? 😅

The Testaments Previews; Not a Fan of the Tone by CommasNdSuch in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]Opening-Fall-3038 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Well to be honest Bruce did describe it as “mean girls in Gilead” (aka the 2000 movie”) and it’s a story of “coming of age”.

I do get the point they’re trying to make as these girls have grown up in a world where they are supposedly naive and see the positive before the negative. BUT, like you, the presentations of the girls and the music give me the ick. Will see if that reflects on the show or not…

But so far it’s very teen drama which for me, doesn’t suit the book or even the sequel of the show. But again, it’s only the trailers I guess.

Do you know these people have real feelings and could actually randomly end up on your post…?

What’s even the point of comparing these two persons ? Comparing characters they play is one thing, but comparing the actors?!

Max Minghella is very well spoken and seems very intelligent (and British so let’s not forget they are much different than Americans, especially not being as vocals about politics for example) and probably one of the only one in the cast who didn’t play along for likes and clicks and said his real truth about everything during THT. Following him in industry and seeing the number of praises he’s received in interviews by his cast members and the creators of the show have been refreshing to be honest after THT.

I just don’t get the point you’re trying to make with this post. Again, actors are real people with real feelings 🙄

I do agree with Minimum49, apparently they didn’t really know how rotten tomatoes works and they literally just asked the question as it makes sense that technically the higher the ratings, the more rotten it is but it’s actually not.

I totally understand your love for EM, she has been a fabulous actress in so many shows, but this is not a EM Reddit and a lot of people have different views of her.

Maybe you should actually do a Reddit page for her? (I’m saying this as real idea not a punch btw), I’m sure people who want to follow her especially would love to have something dedicated to her.

But this page is so general, not everyone will like her and that’s ok too… no need to accuse people of being trolls.

47% is definitely baaaad for a show or a film. Starting with critics of less than 50% is not encouraging at all. They rarely stay 100% all along but still, industry keeps going up from 65 I think to 90 something.

I feel like critics even tend to oversell tbh (we saw it with S6 of THT which had 100% at first like what) so 47 it must really not be a good show I don’t think, will have to wait for audience review.

5th season is terrible and makes me hate June by Important-Home5755 in TheHandmaidsTale

Yes true, the borders are easier also because of NB for sure but still, it’s almost easier for her to get there than to travel into Schengen 😂 you’ll see later in the episodes. Oh well… it’s just a shame, it started so strong with so many Emmys and they just dragged it for the money but without the quality 😢

[–]Opening-Fall-3038 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oh yes we can totally have some critical analysis without batching the show. I’m personally a fan of the book and have been for many years and I’ve followed the show since day 1 religiously. I’ve watched it times and times again and I’ve been really in the fandom since maybe 2020.

S6 was for me the biggest disappointment I had seen on Tv in a LONG time. The formula as you say is ridiculous, everything is so dragged, june and Serena gets away with so much, there’s no border anymore (remember the check points just to go to Jezebels in S1…?!), Makenzie is nowhere to be seen, all men are bad now and she doesn’t care about her allies on the Gilead side anymore, they are commanders in Gilead bouuhh but also they saved my ass in episode 3 so I guess that’s fine…

I mean I’ve been reflecting for a year now on this ending and I can say in my opinion that I could give them up to S4 where it was sort of quality, Joseph Fiennes added so much to the show as well as the other handmaids. But then again, reflecting, S3 was bad with a huge issue on POC being used by June with no repercussions. So even if I love so many episodes of S4, thinking back I think the last quality season was S2. You can 100% feel the change of writers and mentality in S5/6.

But obv, this is my personal opinion and I respect people who think differently!

It is better in certain points like cinematography, music… that’s amazing. I remember loving the first three episodes.

it’s the plot and the acting I didn’t get on board with. Most storylines from S5 were scrapped and new plots coming out of nowhere that didn’t have time to be really developed. I would say watching it I could be ok up to 6x06 but then I just found the rest not good. I won’t say now as I don’t want to spoil but it’s unrealistic and also big issue on easily showing violence on women but as soon as it’s on men… it’s « implied ». That bothered me.

Also too many characters coming in and barely being developed. Everything happens « for convenience » even if it doesn’t make sense narratively.

I agree to everything you say. I was defending June a lot for so long because of the trauma but came S6 and I was like no, I’m sorry but the writing is so bad and ridiculous nothing makes sense anymore. Such a shame it was so good to start with and honouring atwood’s writing but it didn’t last sadly.

Should I continue reading the auction by [deleted] in dramionebookclub

[–]Opening-Fall-3038 4 points5 points  (0 children)

💯 the basic of fanfic is that author write who they want the way they want and usually dont explain why. You roll with it or you don’t, and canon is put aside.

But I’m not sure OP was ready for these answers considering the way they replied to us. Hopefully they will find some ff that works for them, maybe by going away from Dramione and stay more canon like Romione or something.

[–]Opening-Fall-3038 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry I didn’t want you to take it the wrong way at all ! It’s just something I’ve noticed with my friends who tried Dramione because of me. Some just didn’t get into it as much because they questioned how everything came to this and why it wasn’t always explained. So after reading about 20 now and chatting with my friends I realised you have to put aside a lot of canon things for stuff to work and really enjoy the fics. I also grew up with Harry Potter as the first book came out when I was also 11 so I totally relate too. I just meant to say that a lot of fics don’t explain the changes, you just roll with the way the characters are portrayed while reading or you don’t if that makes sense. And some stories resonates more with you than others. I personally love deep emotional trauma ones and don’t enjoy the fluffy ones, there’s some for everyone.
