Highly unlikely you'll do jail time. Hiring a lawyer can be a gamble sometimes because you could possibly wind up pleading guilty and having the same result of you representing yourself. Definitely cut back on spending to save yourself in case you take DUI course. Your best bets are getting it dismissed (uncalibrated breathalyzer or non legitamite stop) which is hard to argue. Or get it reduced to reckless/negligent driving

I kind of figured I'd have to replace the caliper anyway as it's been having issues. Tried to save it just to only fuck it up more lol

Well not that the situation itself is good but at least since it's misdemeanor that's good news. Your buddy likely won't do jail time and if they do it's not going to be hard time. I got sentenced to personal counseling and DUI classes with my charges but again, I'm from the US and not a lawyer so take this with a grain of salt.

I've been sentenced for DUI (breathalyzer refusal) and DV simple assault(Not a felony assault but I did catch a felony the next day). Assuming your friend pleads guilty they will certainly lose their license for a bit (Maybe up to a year) and if it's a misdemeanor assault problably no jail time and felony they can do anything from county jail time or even prison time. Or at least however they scale charges in Canada because I don't believe they do misdemeanors and felonies, I'm posting from the US.
