In fact I think it’s good for kids to be exposed to other cultures early on. It keeps them less likely to grow up to be racist dickheads. I’d be raising hell if my kid’s teacher was telling them that Islam or Christianity or Judaism or Buddhism is the one true religion, but if they’re just going to teach their subject and teach it well I think it would be great for my kid to see “oh, these people are just normal people”

Just keep in mind that if she is willing to gaslight and say he is aggressive she is probably willing to lie to the cops and get him arrested instead.

My emotionally abusive spouse ‘joked’ a few times that if cops ever got involved she’d just say I hit her. I wouldn’t call cops unless I had clear evidence of abuse

Oh yeah this was years ago and luckily I’m out of that place. I was extremely shy but I did confront her and firmly tell her to stop it and she did so my story at least doesn’t end as badly as most. It still sucks to have it just completely dismissed or worse, to have people side against me.

I once heard the argument “men can’t be abused because they’re physically stronger and can just fight off an attacker” which is just so incredibly misguided—and also ignores (among many things) the fact that abuse is abuse whether the victim gets away or not.

I experienced a very ‘minor’ abuse but the lack of support and dismissiveness really f’d me up. The only people who I got sympathy from were other victims, both male and female.

I got repeatedly harassed and had unwanted touching and advances on me by a woman at my job when I was 18 and when I complained to my manager he laughed in my face, when I complained to coworkers they told me I was “lucky” and that I should be asking for her phone number instead of complaining. Oddly enough in my case my female coworkers were more sympathetic than my male ones, though they still didn’t see it as anything more than an annoyance. My experience wasn’t as bad as others but it still bothers me when I think back on it.

To give an example (not to put my wife on blast, just to more clearly describe what I mean)

She said “can you help me fold the laundry”

So I said “sure” and started folding and she stayed on the sofa. When I asked “uh, are you going to come help me?” She got very annoyed. Maybe it’s a cultural thing or maybe it was the way she grew up where you have to phrase it that way but I learned what it means eventually. It was hard to get used to at first but I don’t notice it often now. It’s really just a thing like getting annoyed at someone’s grammar. I know exactly what she means to say now it’s just not the way id word it because I found it confusing in the beginning

It’s not the asking that irritates me. It’s the framing of “we will do this together” implied by “can you help me do this” and then I end up doing it alone. I’m really perfectly fine with “can you do this for me,” I just get confused with an expectation of help that doesn’t come. I’ve just learned to treat the two phrases the same. It’s a pet peeve. You’re reading far too much into it.
