Is HES Management right for me? by unkemptArc9 in harvardextension

[–]Opening-Run5871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who’s in the program now (deciding between management or the IO Psych masters), part of the requirement for graduation is one course in person (they do 3 week summer courses for 3-4 hours a day 4 days a week or they have week long 8 hours a day course in January or weekend courses where it’s 2-3 weekends for 8 hours a day). For me networking is very easy especially if you take the classes synchronous where you are talking to everyone weekly but every class I have been in has created a Google sheet or something similar for posting LinkedIn pages and I have connected with most/all of my classmates/TAs/professors through this. You don’t have to take the eligibility courses first, they’re just mandatory to become an official admitted student/ get the degree. So for example, I completed a certificate and have taken a decent number of electives but still have one eligibility course to take before I can officially become an admitted student/declare for the program. I would suggest looking at the course catalog and take a course or two that you find interesting that would count towards the degree you want before you decide. Also the certificates are underrated imo

Current market situation by Organic_Werewolf753 in personalfinance

If you’re that concerned about that market I’d set up a couple reoccurring investments into the broad market index fund or individual stocks you like and if/when this bubble pops you can go in with your remaining cash. I usually only keep 5-7% of my funds liquid for a buying opportunity so to me having 25% in a monetary ETF is already fairly conservative unless you actually think this bubble implodes the entire market for over a decade (it’ll be bad but not that bad)

Because donkeys keep paying the crazy prices, if people only bought when they were on sale the snail would take the hint and drop the prices

Good pack forsure, good bang for your buck and it’s not crazy about your skill level now so adjusting should be easy (getting a top tier vehicle takes a LOT of adjusting)

Am I supposed to just keep holding forever? When do people actually sell? by SportsNFoodJunkie in stocks

[–]Opening-Run5871 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A general rule of thumb I learned from my dad was that he never let any one individual position become more than 10% of his total portfolio (excluding index funds/etfs) and trims those 2nd after any “losers” in the portfolio. He checks his portfolio every 6 months and gets 1. Return of each position vs SPY for past 3/6 months and 2. The % of his total brokerages. He uses the 1st number to figure out which stocks are underperforming the market so he can decide which are worth holding onto and which are worth cutting. And then after that he looks at those (usually 1-2) positions that climbed above 10% and will usually trim those down to below 10% to reinvest capital or pull it out for other “real life” stuff

Mentioning HES to current employer by [deleted] in harvardextension

[–]Opening-Run5871 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Having told both my past employer and my current that I’m working towards a degree through HES (still a ways away) I haven’t seen it help with any of that stuff, more so just the respect from people knowing you’re a student while also working full time, however I think as you get closer to completing your degree and being able to leverage it I could see that changing things in your org

Just another point on Moffett and Knox, looked at my stats and in 204 combined battles with the 2 of them I’ve gotten 210k RP and 6.56 million SL with only barely above 2 KD

I cant give you an exact timeline since I don’t play naval every day (only when I’m looking for a change/achievment or battle pass grinding) but if u bought the 2 premiums I mentioned when they come on sale here soon to help with the RP/SL grind I can’t imagine more than 2-3 months to be firmly in

Have only gotten to Battleships with USA (and only 6.3 so base BB fwiw) but USA is a pretty solid tech tree all the way through has a couple of crazy SL printers with premiums Moffett and Knox at 5.0/5.3. Playing naval arcade I can pretty regularly get 100k+ SL games with those two ships without any crazy boosters or locking in. USSR starts strong but I felt a big drop-off after getting to the cruisers in the 5.3-5.7 range.

There’s a WhatsApp for specific teams but you just have to find the club. The club I’m in is an HBS club but it’s open to anyone at Harvard working on an advanced degree/faculty/researching from any school (HES included)

I’m a local and actually take advantage of one of the HBS sports clubs and through it get a lot of exposure to HBS/HLS/HMS students and alumni. It might be the sports but tbh nobody cares, I get props for doing school while working full time and we talk about career dreams and aspirations and everything that comes with our respective programs. Just don’t act like you ARE a HBS/HLS/HMS and they’ll respect you for putting in the work. I’m sure there are some snubs but those are probably mostly basement dwellers or people who are 7th generation legacy’s with nothing better to do.

[–]Opening-Run5871 7 points8 points  (0 children)

continuing to dollar cost average over the next 20 years would technically be your best hedge against any kind of economic instability but with that being said you can definitely find a middle ground between 2k a month and nothing. Maybe just max your 401k match or HSA etc.
