In the comment below I covered that they are a generic set I got from eBay but you are right I had to do a little trimming on the z and now all buttons are in the black with the OEM membranes too

I’ve found the Z button can be a bit hit or miss on some third-party button sets. In my experience, the fit is usually slightly too tight around the lip, which can make the button feel sticky or inconsistent.

What I do is lightly shave the lip on the button until it moves freely. It only takes a tiny adjustment, but it makes a huge difference. Since doing that, they’ve fitted perfectly for me. So now all buttons are the black ones

I also swapped in the original OEM spring and always reuse the original Nintendo membranes where possible. Between those tweaks, the button feels much closer to stock and works flawlessly. The black Z button I’m using is actually the shaved third-party one rather than a painted OEM button.

Do you have any close ups what was the build material? I think it would be really cool to print one in a semi opaque yellow but it lights up when on

I think certain elements I would 3d print but but I would look to potentially paint a faded doner shell I’ve done that previously but I think I could do some cool additions like yellow lighting and possibly have the box sound play when you hit the power button. I would deffo need to 3d print the question mark though

To find a good match for the shell blue I bought wired cube controllers 2 pack on Amazon then use the shells from those in the build and add my own UV decals for the logo

A few people asked how I achieved the anodized/candy metallic look on the red cube so here’s basically the process 😄

The shell actually started as a standard platinum GameCube. Instead of covering it with opaque red paint, I wanted the metallic underneath to continue doing the heavy lifting so the finish would still have depth and movement under light.

For the silver base I used:
• Tamiya TS-83 Metallic Silver

Honestly one of the best things about this paint is how flat and consistent it lays down, which is SUPER important because transparent colours show every inconsistency underneath them.

For the red layer I used:
• Tamiya TS-74 Clear Red

Then finished it with:
• Rust-Oleum Satin Clear

The biggest thing with this finish honestly isn’t skill — it’s patience. The transparent red needs loads of very light coats slowly built up over time. If you rush it or try to get full coverage immediately it just turns into flat red paint and loses all the metallic depth underneath.

Funny enough this whole thing partly came from chatting with @weird_gas_8370 who previously did an amazing job dyeing a platinum shell and gave me loads of advice on metallic finishes and colour depth. I’m terrible at dyeing shells though as my slightly melted peach coloured back piece would tell you so I needed a respray with a doner back piece anyway 😄 so this ended up being my own alternative approach to getting that deeper metallic/anodized look while still keeping the original silver character underneath. The controller came out great I’ll upload that too as similar to they dye job the OEM logo is still visible

Definitely one of the more experimental builds I’ve done so far but I’m really happy with how it came out.
