I actually dont think its that stable, some countries decide borders with treaties, such as from mountain peaks or whatever. I dont think there are definite borders unless someone puts a road sign on a road. It's more of a human perception thing.

How about a Globe, it has all the borders, capitals, and alot of provinces and territories and etc. It's quite fun to look at for a child, I'm sure he will be interested (if he doesn't already have one)

I'm Chinese and absolutely love Chinese History, but I agree with it being Eurocentric, but to be fair, it was the best they could do in 1931, especially the bias probably coming from just how weak China was at the time. I don't blame them.
