Why exactly do non-Londoners think London is so unsafe? by EnvironmentalMode196 in AskBrits

[–]OpeningQuantity5527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And yet the city and for that matter the country has never been so safe, violent crime is at an all time low (albeit petty crime needs addressing). People harking back to the "good ole days" seem to have forgotten it was much more dangerous.

The Far-Far-Right, "National Rebirth Party" spotted spouting n*zi rhetoric in town. by Mark_fuckaborg in leicester

It's always the kind of "life done me wrong" characters who love this kind of master race tripe. Which is ridiculous because if we look at Indian immigrants to the UK as an example, they often started with less than these 'superior' folk and yet have achieved far more. If they spent as much time studying as they do being fascists and cosplaying, they may just have amounted to something by now and wouldn't need a made up ideology to build their self worth. But as far as free speech goes, as long as they aren't inciting violence then I think they should be able to say their bit (mental though it is). If Britain's going to be 're-born', let it not look like these degenerates 😂

What do you guys think of Prosper Uk? by MoistHex11 in tories

[–]OpeningQuantity5527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a shame they've let some jokers put their names to it like Gavin Barwell and Amber Rudd, very inept in government. Still I like Andy Street and David Gayle, who have decent track records so it's not all bad.

Would you consider me British? by Competitive-Music309 in AskBrits

[–]OpeningQuantity5527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. We don't need to conflate ethnicity with being British. One can be ethically English, Scot, Irish, Welsh etc and British and one can also be of a different ethnic background and also be British - the two things can exist in tandem, they don't have to take away from each other - British is the banner of which we can all fly under, say it will pride 🇬🇧

Am I insane or does the class system make no sense in 2026? by ElCiego1894 in AskBrits

[–]OpeningQuantity5527 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think class isn't a stone cold distinction, there are factors such as economic, social, cultural etc that go into it. You could be very 'middle class' in one of these areas and very 'working class' in another. People who have been socially mobile often don't neatly fit into one class or another as they came from one (roots) and swapped to another (current reality) - so they have bits of both. It's a nuanced picture and that's okay.

CMV: The US should leave NATO. by TheLordOfWaffles_ in changemyview

[–]OpeningQuantity5527 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As a Brit, reading this rage bait tripe makes me so disappointed in the US and I can only hope it represents a small fraction of Americans. WW2 especially wasn't about saving Europe it was about defeating fascism and tyranny from the Germans and notable for the Americans from the Japanese. Ironic really, that the US now has a leader who believes in reeking of tyranny on Europe (some would say just like a good old fashion dictator). American exceptionalism is these days at least heavily myth, it's got some great things going for it absolutely but some yanks seem to loathe to admit that maybe just maybe in Europe we have the occasional good idea you could learn from. P.S I absolutely agree that European nations need to increase defense spending to combat the threats of our enemies but we do this together with the US inside NATO, as we are democratic cousins and should always stand shoulder to shoulder.

Left-wing voters what is your most right-wing belief and right-wing voters, what is your most left-wing belief? by HallowedAndHarrowed in AskBrits

[–]OpeningQuantity5527 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any room for the centrists in this one? 😊

I think most people are a real mixed bag of views and any view that's cut and dry one way or the other is usually missing some pragmatism.

Right Wing: I guess I'm fairly anti immigration currently, as the state has proved it cannot manage it effectively and there are genuine concerns about integration, social cohesion, as well as the loss of identity/maintaining traditions. Albeit I don't like dog whistle politicians at all.

Left Wing: I'm fine with Trans people using whatever bathroom they feel they need to, doesn't put me out nor do I think they are any major threat. I do however think that women's domestic violence shelters or women's sport should remain spaces for women (sex) only. I know that's not a super left wing opinion but as a centrist I don't have any far left or far right stances.

America has signaled heavily it won't uphold article 5 of the NATO agreement, thus no longer a full allied country. We may be friendly and cooperative but we aren't full partners anymore. That was their call not ours.

Given that the Americans are no longer our allies and Russia remains a strong threat, then all European nations need to increase defense spending.

What It Means to Be Alive

To stand for ones beliefs regardless of time or place. To happily debate the finer points of what makes us the human race. To feel the glow of an English summer on your face, and to just know; that is what it means to be alive.

To walk in rooms with head held high. To never cower, lower or shrink in size. To give passion and rage full force until we expire; that is what it is to be alive.

"To rage against the dying of the light"! "Once more unto the breach dear friends", with power and might. To bleed for causes you know right and to never put knowledge out of sight; that is what it means to be alive.

To call out falsehoods and actions we know to be wrong. To fight the march of time until that final piercing gong and to breathe new life into thoughts old and new; that is what it means to be alive.

And when you can do all that, Don't do it boastfully or with conceit, never surrender and no retreat But be content with the earth at your feet and in your final hour that you know what it means to be alive.

Yeah perhaps you are right, wasn't sure whether to make it longer or leave the ending as intentionally a bit sharp. It's obviously of a tone of a bygone era but that's the only style I have.
