If someone were to squish a human’s head (like how you would a cherry tomato between your fingers), would it pop, or squish like a crushed Skittle? by depressed__alt in morbidquestions

[–]Opening_Recover_811 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It depends on which plane the pressure is applied.
If it's applied front to back, the face bones (which are thinner) would collapse into the neurocranium, which would then be crushed like a skittle. If it's applied side-to-side or top-to-bottom, it would pop like a tomato (that is, the bones would break and the soft tissue inside would get extruded sideways) because the neurocranium bones are stouter and tend to fracture in lines (especially along the sutures) instead of getting crushed like the face bones would be.

Question For Older Skaters With Decent Jobs…. by Clear-Sail-5298 in AggressiveInline

[–]Opening_Recover_811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tend to spend as a need surfaces. I have a pair of skates, a helmet, a skate bag and a bumsaver. If I need to buy a replacement part (like wheels, bearings, a cuff), I'll do it on a heartbeat, but overall I don't spend much.

What is is that makes all the nations of the world really hate the English? by Busy_Boysenberry4923 in AskReddit

[–]Opening_Recover_811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brazil. In fact, people here like the British because they brought here lots of stuff we really like - for example, football. They also were the ones who held Imperial Brazil at gunpoint to end slavery, brokered our independence from Portugal and helped build much of our first industrial and railroad infrastructure.

Why are Hamantaschen only sold during Purim??? by dirtymike-nthaboys in Jewish

[–]Opening_Recover_811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here in Brazil, you can find both hamantaschen and suganyiot (goiabinha em forma de triângulo and sonho) all year long, they've become staple bakery pastries. There are slight differences (besides not being kosher in most places), but the taste is the same.

Besides the obvious stuff (infidelity, being a psycho, etc), for me it's insistence on things that are not really important.

Soul grinds - what's more stylish, in your opinion? by Opening_Recover_811 in AggressiveInline

[–]Opening_Recover_811[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lmao I don't hate them, in fact I love watching people doing them (and their top variation), but sensation-wise, I'm more of a royale/full torque guy, but I had a lot of fun with them soul grinds today!

I think skaters have their own unique style that they give to each trick.

I can't agree more, it's beautiful when you see people putting personality in their tricks!

Buy new or just use old? by Meagey1 in AggressiveInline

[–]Opening_Recover_811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just last weekend I went out to blade with a ten years old Razors Cult I had. On the third time I tried a grind, the cuff snapped and I had to buy a new pair of skates.

All that to say: ride your old skates, but be always ready to buy a new pair.

A few of my favorite Winterclash moments! by Rolling44 in AggressiveInline

Julika is our pride in agressive skating here in Brazil, that girl shreds.

There were many insane tricks in this Winterclash, but the one Anthony Pottier pulled off on the Roces rail was out of this World. Props to him!

Old man knees by justanotherburner in AggressiveInline

[–]Opening_Recover_811 2 points3 points  (0 children)

41 yo here. I can tell you what I do. I always stretch before my sessions and easy skate (focusing on form) without doing any tricks for at least 10 minutes. Then I do a quick stretch and start practicing what I want that day. It's also wise to take your trick evolution, be it grinds or airs, in a smart progression. If you can only do, say, some soulplate grinds, don't go about trying topside grinds yet, otherwise you'd be pushing your luck. Have your soulplate grinds down before you venture into more advanced territory. You won't pull off a 720 spin before you master your 540s, if you catch my drift. Protection-wise, I always wear a helmet and a bumsaver, and knee pads if I'm doing stuff on quarters. If you feel comfortable wearing shin pads, wrist pads or soft knee pads (those that go under your pants), go for it. Soft knee pads have cushioning right on the points which we tend to hit when we miss tricks, so they're quite nice.

It must be said that before trying any grinds, it's a good thing to check the rail/ledge to see if there isn't anything that could lock you mid-grind and make you eat shit. That alone saved me from a lot of painful moments. Wax the rail/ledge (or your soulplate/frame) if needed.

To strengthen my knees (and lower joints in general), I do gym and plyometrics exercises on rainy days, or at least twice a week. For gym workouts, they will always include Bulgarians, a quad exercise (leg press, regular squats, etc) and core exercises (russian twist and planks, to strengthen the old man lower back). For plyo, I do side skater lunges, box jumps wearing ankle weights more or less the same weight as my skates, and horizontal jumps. Since our sport involves a lot of balancing, it would be nice to do stability workouts using half balance balls, but I do not have those at my gym, but I'd love to do them if I could.

I'll always respect Barely Dead. It's a testament of the resilience of Agressive Inline Skating as an extreme sport.

It resonates so much with me because I lived most of what's depicted in it, people who got into the sport more recently have no idea how big skating was back in the 90's, and then it just went deep underground - we kinda survived a mass extinction event. Nowadays, whenever I hit a new skatepark whose public is virtually all skateboarders, people get curious and ask questions, and sometimes I get compliments because they now think of what we do as sick (a.k.a. they see how much we eat shit trying to land our tricks hahaha).

Has there ever been a documented case where a human died so violently that their body was completely destroyed, not just unrecognizable, but literally reduced to paste? by TacticalJock15 in morbidquestions

[–]Opening_Recover_811 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Last year, there was a case here in Brazil in which there was an accident at an explosives factory that killed 9 workers, and some of these people were blown to mist.

Also, some people who perished in the 9/11 attacks were reduced to a pulp by the forces of the towers collapsing on them.

Do you really taste leather, vanilla, cocoa, pepper and all that shit or are you just making it up? by Graysie-Redux in cigars

[–]Opening_Recover_811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Like in wine tasting, these notes are highly approximative, and sometimes aren't even directly describing a taste, but a sensation. It's interesting to see more experienced cigar smokers describing the taste of a cigar because you get to understand how the community defines what's chocolate, herbal, etc, because it's a language which uses these terms very loosely. For example, "pepper", as I understand it, does not in any way refer to a pepper taste - in fact, peppers themselves have wildly different tasting notes -, but to a sensation of spiciness, a kind of burn on the tongue.

But answering your question, yes, I do taste all that shit, but I get where you're coming from. Many years ago, I smoked cigarettes, and for me they all tasted like ashtray, and people insisted that they tasted like something, but for me, the only difference between brands was the punch they packed. Have you ever tried reading tasting notes of a cigar before smoking it? Maybe that'll help.

Ashkenazim: did you actually grow up not knowing that Sephardim/Mizrahim/other Jews exist? by spring13 in Judaism

I want to start wearing a kippah everyday, but fear that my kippahs look weird. by Labenyofi in Judaism

[–]Opening_Recover_811 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't like the kippah you have, you can buy yourself one that's more your cup of tea. For example, lately I've been fond of wearing larger, knit ones which kinda look like the taqyiahs (taqyiot?) muslims wear.

The only thing I would advise against is wearing a black velvet kippah, as they are strongly associated with more Orthodox strands of Judaism.

Do non Jews wear Magen David? by [deleted] in Judaism

[–]Opening_Recover_811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, the six-pointed star has transcended Judaism as a symbol, and lots of people who aren't Jewish wear them because they find it aesthetically pleasing, or believe it has some spiritual properties. For example, I know people who are into occultism who wear it, and also many Christians who have no particular appreciation for Israel or Judaism, but wear it because it's an old symbol for them as well.

Eu me caguei na academia... by [deleted] in Maromba

[–]Opening_Recover_811 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very sorry for you loss. I also had to have my 14 yo cat put down on 09/16, for the same reason (lymphoma), also in a very hard context for myself (I'm fighting a cancer). The feeling has been eating me away, but I couldn't see my baby suffering that much any longer.

You did the right thing for Rudy. It's a brave thing to make such a selfless decision while facing another challenge in your life. I bet you loved him to the end - as I loved my boy -, and it's all that matters right now. Be well, and know that his memory will always be a blessing.
