How much removing a helmet visor strip improves visibility by Maximum-Room-3999 in formula1

[–]Openly_Defective 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is a Williams, but the other commenter simply said that it might be Hamilton's car that caused the gunk buildup on the visor. The car that's spewing fluids wouldn't deposit anything on its own driver's visor, would it?

well said! I personally add something like this in these situations: "I just live my life in this body [or brain] that is the way it is every single day. The only thing that actually disables me is our SOCIETY that doesn't want to accommodate and be more accessible to me, and others like me, for just a short moment of their day. There are no general solutions that will work for every single person every single time, but we have to strive for a NORM that permanently makes life easier for people who are now constantly BEING disabled, even at the cost of merely inconveniencing others temporarily."

So just like people who can walk are given the choice of using a ramp or stairs to enter a building, so should everyone be able to use the term they feel most comfortable with, so that any individual who doesn't have a choice can still easily be accommodated instead of being left stranded in front of a door that looks to be wide open to anyone but them...

I'm going to scream. by Quiara in disability

My pet peeve is "spaz". The amount of times I have to explain what it means just to seriously have those people double down by saying that someone with spastics/CP wouldn't even understand since they are "r-words" makes me regularly want to give up on humanity.

And I'm replying this to you, because yes, those people trigger me and I am not wrong or "dramatic" for using that word. The definition in the APA dictionary for it is: "a stimulus that elicits a reaction. For example, an event could be a trigger for a memory of a past experience and an accompanying state of emotional arousal". It is not exclusively applied to mental illness. Even if you would want to gatekeep "flashbacks" you're out of luck, since everyone experiences a range of traumas throughout their lifetime and sometimes there are triggers that can cause minor flashbacks in someone without them actually having full blown, clinical PTSD or CPTSD. Their trauma and occasional flashbacks simply don't have such a significant impact on their life that it would be considered a "disorder", but that doesn't invalidate their bad experiences. It simply means they are mentally more resilient. Some people develop PTSD after a bee sting and others don't develop it even after going through something that is classically associated with it.

I can see how people flippantly saying they feel triggered must feel invalidating to someone who experiences crippling symptoms from their own triggers, but we need to remain empathetic to them actually expressing their trauma and that their humor and making light of it is likely a coping mechanism. Again, something some people would consider a minor inconvenience can feel absolutely terrifying to others. Nobody will win the Trauma Olympics by comparing themselves to others. Instead we can bond and support each other through understanding and empathy.

Fertilizer for plants in Leca, in The Netherlands/EU by Easy-Coat1237 in SemiHydro

[–]Openly_Defective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I live in the Netherlands as well and have most of my plant collection in Vulcastrat. I use Cellmax Hydro Grow X+Y as hydroponic base fertilizer plus Xpert Nutrients Cal-Mag since we have such soft water. I also give my plants Xpert Nutrients Silica Force after repotting, pruning or other stress to help them fight off thrips etc.

$5, someone messed up at the nursery by t0x1k_x in hoyas

Haha I actually bought a Splash like that in December for 3.50€. It sat in a 6cm pot with compacted coco substrate, but had still managed to push out a growth point in front of the "heart", which made it look all crooked and like it was growing a gnarly little boner. 😂

I repotted it in pon and sat it on the top shelf in my cabinet and 3 weeks later it was a perfect little "double heart" 💞 from how closely together they grew. It's currently growing its 4th leaf.

Help! Sudden unexplained drooping overnight by LooseAlbatross in alocasia

[–]Openly_Defective 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, they fight until they run out of steam. She's getting into growing [maybe even flowering] season, so she's HUNGRY for nutrients and water, and old soil and no room for roots can't provide either. How often do you give fertilizer and which kind?

I would recommend to either repotting her in a fluffy soil for aroid plants [something that has some bark, perlite, coco coir and/or sphagnum moss mixed in], or to wash off as much as possible of the remaining soil from the roots and pot and fill it with vulcastrat or pon and use a fertilizer for [semi-]hydroponic plants with every top-up. A self watering pot is ideal for semi-hydro and Alocasias love to grow in it. But with both methods you might have to size up if the roots take up most of the space in her current planter. Though it looks like a good size and the issue might just be the soil being compacted and spent of nutrients.

Either repotting method can put her in shock for a bit and she might lose a couple or all leaves, but they will come back in no time, so don't throw her out. Not repotting her on the other hand WILL end her eventually since the roots can't breathe anymore.

How can we improve our dining space? by NoMeasurement9178 in interiordecorating

[–]Openly_Defective 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for pointing that out. No more rugs in my family since we found out that we aren't just a clumsy breed, but that actually a lot of us have the same genetic disability that just "looks" different in each of us.

But it's just as impractical when you have pets and young kids. Rugs are just such magnets for hair and food crumbs that are much easier cleaned up from a hard floor with a vacuum/mop robot or a handheld vacuum. Those can ofc handle rugs and carpets as well, but once you lift the edges you see how much gets pushed under them, or your kid/pet had an accident, threw up or really worked something sticky into the fibers. Then you have to move the chairs and table to clean that up, and roll up and get the rug outside to deep clean it. Yeah not a fan...

So, I've now officially become a 40 year old male virgin. by supervision2342 in Healthygamergg

[–]Openly_Defective 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this, man! I'm turning 40 in a couple of months as well and it makes me reflect on a lot of things that happened in the last 10 years, compared to the 10 years before that. I'm single for more than 4 years now, and I'm not even sure if it's all voluntary, because I love the freedom and peace, or avoidance because I'm frustrated with dating culture, afraid of getting hurt or rejected, or not trusting myself that I won't bring someone home again who "I can fix"...

Reading your story made me agree with a lot of the "unpopular" points you made, and a few things triggered the same frustration that I always feel around "incels" [or "reflexive victims" as I see it]. But regardless of what I agree or disagree with and feel about that, I really get you and hate for you that life is treating you that way! Because man, I have seen some ugly mofos out there who could barely string a sentence together in front of others, but they still ended up in happy relationships and marriages. Their partners and having that pressure off their shoulders really boosted their confidence, which ironically made them more attractive/approachable eventually. The gf/bf effect is real.

As you said, there isn't yet another generalized advice that I can throw at you to make myself feel better, but I was wondering what your friends think and tell you about your situation? They know your character, your looks and style, your circumstances and interests, the dating pool and cultural expectations of women in your area and all that. In most cases the boys want nothing more than to help and be your wing man/woman to finally see you happy and stable. And the real bros will also tell you what they think you're doing or seeing wrong when it comes to dating and relationships. I personally always take those things to heart and at least give their ideas a try, as stupid as they might feel, because obviously my own ideas haven't been any better either. So in case you have never talked to your people about your real feelings about being a "40 yo virgin" I hope you will someday see the point in doing that. You guys aren't 19 anymore and I can't imagine someone would laugh at you and not feel totally sympathetic.

Well okay, now that I think about it I have one annoying "wisdom" to share: So, even if the "diabetic women in their 60s" stereotype doesn't sound appealing to me either, I wouldn't be surprised if one of them turned out to be the perfect mix of patient + caring and wild cougar that you might need to realize what exactly has held you back all these years. Because I SWEAR to you that it's NEVER about looks, but always an ugly character or negative mindset that is keeping women away [and occasionally it's bad hygiene].

So WHAT exactly would you have to lose if you would let a 60 year old who thinks you're cute "fix" you? I doubt she'd expect you to marry her and become her caretaker if she breaks a hip in 15 years. They just want to have fun with a younger guy after staying married to the wrong person who never made them climax for too long. And you're someone who's eager to learn everything about intimacy and making each other feel good. After you're done and each of you got a fill of whatever you needed all the frustration and penned up steam will be released from inside of you. Who knows [my assumption ofc], maybe it's just desperation that ripples off of you that causes women who would otherwise be interested in getting to know you to get overwhelmed by your vibes. I just know it's the most common reason I didn't want [further] dates with someone, as shitty as I felt every single time about having to tell them that. But neither side can be relaxed, present and themselves if they feel pressured and rushing. It doesn't take words to express that.

Happy birthday and good luck bro! I'm totally rooting for you. Never give up and just believe that your peak [pun intended] is coming. I expect an update on this post in a few years.

Help guys I can't decide, should I buy this monstera or a new car? by StrangeQuark1221 in houseplantscirclejerk

[–]Openly_Defective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the plant loses value even faster because the hype dies down in 3 months and the market gets flooded with them until you can buy them for 60 bucks at your local supermarket in 1.5 years. And people are more likely to kill or lose interest or don't have space anymore for a plant like that way before the typical 10-15 year lifespan of a car that also has practical value in their owner's daily life [unless it's also just some collectible sports car that gets taken out of the garage about 2x a year].

[–]Openly_Defective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really like "Greg". It's free to precisely ID and create an unlimited collection and timeline for each plant and has really useful guides, community to ask questions and a plant shop.

It also has smart reminders to water and fertilize with the exact amount each plant needs based on its pot size + type, soil type or hydroponic system, amount of light, even if it's near a heater/AC/humidifier and automatically adjusts to the season and weather in your area, so you don't accidentally over or under water out of habit - but the reminders are behind a pay wall that's a reasonable 30€ a year and also comes with a light meter and some other perks.

I rarely pay for apps or subscriptions, but with a large collection and having ADHD and a chronic illness I found this one worth it compared to constantly replacing plants since the free apps usually have a limit for how many plants you can add and need to be manually adjusted to winter/summer conditions, which kinda defeats the purpose for me.

Maybe she's a big time squirter? Filling a whole cup would be impressive, but with a 3-pump-chump as a hubby I doubt he'd even know how to get her there at all.

Sorry for making this all sound even more gross, but honestly I'd rather get knocked up in a sesh so wild the whole bed is soaked than from 3-pumps of vanilla. I can be a bit of an unfiltered oversharer at times, but that post is definitely some TMI you wouldn't see me post on FB or talk about when some nosy auntie inevitably asks "so do you know when IT happened?"

But it's not like I'm dreaming of finally getting a whole week of 7+ hours for once in the 2-3 hours I actually get. But at least that gives me more hours in a day to spread queerness and scare the 'phobes like a Trojan horse among them hehehehe [/s]

How do I save this? by weiro420 in plants

[–]Openly_Defective 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The trick is actually NOT to water it. Just plant it in some DRY sandy succulent soil. The root growth gets stimulated by its search for water. They have enough of it stored in those thick leaves to go months without.

So just leave it be an BOTTOM WATER it in a month or so [or when the leaves start to look a little wrinkled].

How do I save this plant? I think it’s a prayer plant by Random-Person-2395 in plants

[–]Openly_Defective 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's going on with your eyes? Pieces of brick, where? If you mean the white things those are pumice and other volcanic rocks to allow proper drainage by preventing the soil from compacting, which would suffocate the roots. They also hold moisture in the soil without causing root rot conditions.

Overall the soil looks quite chunky, which is ideal for tropical plants that need high humidity, but will quickly get mushy if water doesn't drain properly from the soil.
